Contemporary culture isolates and alienates the modern citizen while simultaneously eroding the spiritual life which informs and gives true meaning to one's existence. In our society there exists an atmosphere that celebrates and glorifies drinking. This atmosphere is prevalent at school and in the workplace. Tragically, this culture oftentimes pressures others to drink. As a result, many people are exposed to alcoholism. Not only have such facts not been given enough attention, but they also have been evaded. This has created an enormous social problem. Therefore, it is necessary to give full attention to those alcohics and to get actively involved with the treatment for them throughout the society. So far, various treatment methods have been tested. Amongst them, the music therapy has been confirmed to have affected those alcohics both in emotionl and social aspect. However, there has been no research on effective musical treatment in order to reduce pessimistic attitude and/or mentality for alcoholic adults. This purpose of this study was to find effective musical treatment in order to reduce pessimistic attitude and/or mentality for alcoholic adults. Two different experiments have been conducted to find a uniquelyspecial musical need and the effective musical treatment for alcoholic adults as therapuic approach. The first experiment was performed through three surveys on preference for tense and relaxing melody. First, preference was tested among different personality types of the entire group. The second survey was conducted to determine whether there is any different preference among same/similar personality types of the entire group. The third survey tested only the alcoholic group and examined any different preference and the relationship with various factors such as personality types, motives for drinking. The general group (N=31) was tested on September 19 and 26 in 2003; the alcoholic group (N=37) was tested on September 19 nd 26 in 2003. Prior to the survey, the short personality examination of Cloninger's Tridimentional Personality Questionnaire was conducted to both the general group and alcoholic group. In addition, the drinking motive was examined for the alcoholic group. The tense and relaxing melody was selected based on musical theory. In order to be less tainted with prejudice againstorder, the test was arranged in the following order. As a result, despite the fact that the alcoholic group has limitations on reaction to the music, those harm averse and active aggressive types possess a uniquelyspecial musical need. In other words, the more harm averse types of person, the less preference on the relaxing melody; the more active aggressive types of person, the greater preference on the relaxing melody. Such difference had to do with the level of the harm averse. The second experiment was clinically conducted on preference fortense and relaxing melody which was tested in the preceding experiment. Only subject at this time was the great harm averse alcoholic consisted of ten (N=10) persons of experimental group and twelve (N=12) persons of controlled groups. They were given different programs of music eight (8) times from October 20 through November 17 in 2003. Their feature and anxiety conditions (STAI: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Y type) were meticulously observed and compared their state with that before the music was given. To the control group, only repeated A-A melody consisted of relaxing components was given while the variable types of A-B-A tense melody was given to the experimental group. As a result, while both control and experimental groups showed a significant decrease on the anxiety level, the experimental group's decrease on the anxiety level was even greater. Although the relaxing melody played a vital role in reducing the anxiety level, the combination of the relaxing and tense melody showed more effective musical treatment to decrease the alcoholics' anxiety level. The first and second experiments have the following significance. Those harm averse types of alcoholics who heavily rely on alcohols preferred the relaxing melody since such melody can provide with a sanctuary from anxiety and nervousness. The fact that the relaxing melody is able to reduce the anxiety level was clinically proved. Furthermore, the combination of the relaxing and tense melody showed more effective musical treatment because the tense melody enabled the alcoholics to lessen their anxiety to drink. But in the first experiment, the motives for drinking that the alcoholic group possesses did not demonstrate significant difference on preference. Therefore, producing sophisticated music concerning musical experience that alcoholic group has is necessary.
