미국의 초기 포스트모던댄스에 나타난 미니멀리즘에 대한 연구

Abstract

During the sixties, the whole art of America, under the counter- cultural environment consisted mainly of working of radical idea and emphasis on the spirit of experiment. New style of dance(post-modern dance), which refused the style of early modem dance emerged into the world under the influence of pioneer like Ann Halprin, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Robert Dunn, and of the choreographers working around the Judson Dance Theater. Post-modern dance of America can be classified into two groups : early post-modem dance, which emphasized the analytic part of the movement and late post-modem dance, which emphasized expression and symbolic elements. This thesis is based on the documents that the dances have shown in the early post-modern dance of America which developed from the analytic side of the movement and is studied of Minimalism, which is thought to have provided a methodological way to access substance of dance by removing and reducing the experimental and decorative elements of early post-modern dance. Reflecting Absolutism Art, Bauhaus and Duchamp's ready-made and objecting against Abstract Expressionism in fifties caused occurrance of Minimalism centering aroud the sculpture and had an important effect on the whole art. Early post-modem dance of America objected against old dance which was expressive and technical and developed choreography which is baed on movement itself. To analyze Minimalism shown in early post-modem dance : first, I briefly studied minimalism of dance and examined the tendency of minimal choreography shown in the works of great choreographers as Robert Morris, Yvonne Rainer, Steve Paxton, Rucinda Childs, and Trisha Brown. Second, I classified charateristics of Minimalism into three groups Body, Movement and Constrution, then examined those on the basis of the analysis of their works. Through a minial method, early post-modem dance of America had greater interest in the body of human than other times. And, including ordinary movements among dances, it expanded the range of dance language and, through this, paid attention to the substance of pure and simple movement. Finally the study of minimalism is very significant in that it provided early post-modern dance with an intellectual and experimental spirit to the substance of dance and was a methodology to have presented dance as an art.;1960년대에 미국의 예술전반은 반문화적 상황아래 급진적이고 실험정신이 강조된 작업활동이 주를 이루었다. 무용도 초기의 현대무용양식을 거부한 새로운 형태의 무용 - 포스트 모던댄스 -이 앤 핼프린(Ann Halprin), 존 케이지(John Cage), 머스 커닝햄(Merce Cunningham), 로버트 던(Robert Dunn)의 선구적 영향에 의해, 그리고 저드슨 무용단(Judson Dance Theater)을 중심으로 활동한 많은 안무가들에 의해 탄생하였다. 이렇게 출발한 미국의 포스트 모던댄스를 크게 움직임의 분석적 측면이 강조된 초기 포스트 모던댄스와 표현적이고 상징적인 요소들을 포함한 후기 포스트 모던댄스로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 본 논문은 미국의 초기 포스트 모던댄스에 나타난 무용들이 움직임의 분석적인 측면을 중심으로 전개되었다는 문헌에 근거한 것이며, 이러한 초기 포스트 모던댄스에 있어, 표현적이고 장식적인 요소를 제거하고 축소시킴으로서 무용의 본질에 접근해 나가기 위한 하나의 방법론적인 면을 제공했다고 생각되는 '미니멀리즘(Minimalism)'에 대해 연구한 것이다. 절대주의 회화, 바우하우스, 뒤샹의 레디메이드의 영향을 반영하고 1950년대 널리 퍼져있던 추상표현주의에 반대하여 일어난 미니멀리즘은 조각을 중심으로 전개되었으며 여러 예술전반에 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 저드슨 무용단을 중심으로 전개된 미국의 초기 포스트 모던댄스 역시 표현적이고 기교적인 과거의 무용을 반대하고 움직임 자체에 근거한 안무작업을 전개하여 왔다. 초기 포스트 모던댄스에 나타난 미니멀리즘을 분석하기 위해서 첫째, 무용의 미니멀리즘을 간략하게 살펴보고, 대표적 안무가인 로버트 모리스(Robert Morris), 이본느 레이너(Yvonne Rainer), 스티븐 팩스톤(Steve Paxton), 루씬다 챠일즈(Lucinda Childs), 트리샤 브라운(Trisha Brown)의 작품에 나타난 미니멀리즘적 안무경향을 알아보았다. 둘째로, 이들의 작품분석을 바탕으로 미니멀리즘적 특성을 신체, 움직임, 구성의 세 부분으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 미니멀의 방법을 통해 미국의 초기 포스트 모던댄스는 다른 어느시기 보다도 인간의 신체에 대한 관심이 높았다. 그리고 일상적인 움직임을 무용에 포함시켜 무용어휘의 범위를 확대시켰고, 이를 통해 순수하고 단순한 움직임의 본성에 주위를 기울였다. 결국, 미니멀리즘에 대한 연구는 초기 포스트 모던댄스에 있어서 무용의 본질에 대해 지적이고 실험적인 정신을 제공하고 예술로써 무용을 제시한 방법론이었다는 점에서 중요한 의의를 지닌다.
