존재의 There 구문 분석

Abstract

There are two kinds of there; existential there and locative there. In traditional grammar and transformational grammar, many linguists have argued that the existential there is a meaningless element and it has to be used with an indefinite NP and existential verbs. But, in functional grammar which put an emphsis on the semantic, pragmatic parts, it is regarded that existential there itself has a meaning in a particular psychological area. So the linguists in functionalism pointed out the difference between the sentences that contains there and the sentences that does not. Therefore, this study is concerned with finding out the correct meaning of existential 'there-construction' by both syntactic and semantic analysis. And, through analyzing the data from the novels and the periodicals and from the English textbooks that is used for the high school students, I try to study the constraints on using the construction. The major points of this study are finding out the relevance of definite NP's, the relevance of verbs, the relevance of number agreement and the meaning and the function in the context of situation. The result of the analysis is as follows. First, there sentences are usually used with an indefinite NP. But there sentences are used with the definite NP when the hearer has forgotten someone or something that must then be reinforced or when the meaning of the sentence is indefinite semantically. Therefore, there is need to distinguish between the semantic definiteness and the grammatical definiteness. Second, there sentences are usually used with existential verbs. Most of them are 'be' and an intransitive verb that represents an existence or an appearance. Third, there is used in order to lead the hearer's attention or to be natural in conversation. And also it has a abstract meaning and a signal function that represents the existence in the abstract and the psychological area.;영어에는 존재를 나타내는 there와 장소를 나타내는 there의 두 가지가 있으나, 특히 존재를 나타내는 there구문은 한국어에 상응하는 표현이 없기 때문에 한국의 학습자들이 어려움을 많이 느낀다. 종래의 전통문법이나 변형문법에서는 there구문을 비한정 명사구와 사용되고 존재 동사와만 사용되는 구문으로 보았고, there를 무의미한 요소로 간주하였다. 그러나, 의미론적, 화용론적 입장을 중시하는 기능 문법에서는 there를 의미가 있는 요소로 간주하여 그 존재 유무에 따라 의미상의 차이가 난다고 보고 있으며, 이전의 문법에서는 해결할 수 없었던 많은 부분에 대해 체계적인 설명을 하고 있다. 본 논문은 구조적, 의미적의 어느 한 면에 치중하지 않고, 양 면을 종합하여 there구문을 분석하고자 한다. 영어 소설 및 정기 간행물에서 수집한 there구문을 명사구와 동사와 관련해서, 그리고 수의 일치 및 담화상의 의미와 기능을 중심으로 분석하고, 이를 토대로 현행 고등학교 교과서에 수록된 구문들도 분석, 검토해 보고자 한다. there 구문의 특성을 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 일반적으로 there구문은 비한정 명사구와 사용된다. 그러나, 청자에게 어떤 개념을 강조하거나 재인식 시킬 때, 형식상으로는 한정적이나 의미상으로 비한정적일 때는 한정 명사구의 사용이 가능하다. 둘째, there구문은 대체로 존재를 나타내는 동사와 사용된다. 존재를 나타내는 대표적 동사인 be 동사와의 사용이 가장 많고, 사라져가는 의미가 아닌 출현의 의미를 나타내는(appear, rise, emerge 등) 자동사도 사용이 가능하다. 셋째, there는 청자의 집중을 유도하거나 대화를 자연스럽게 하기 위해 사용되며, 추상적 개념의 존재 뿐만 아니라 내면적 세계의 존재를 알리는 신호적 기능까지 포함한다.
