중학교 수준의 영어문장의 애매성 연구

Abstract

언어 행위의 궁극적 목적은 언어를 매체로 한 의사 소통이다. 따라서, 원활한 의사 소통을 위해서는 신호 체계(signaling system)로서의 언어가 갖는 여러 양상을 충분히 이해하여 실제의 언어 행위에 유익하게 활용할 수 있는 능력이 요구된다. 언어 표현이 갖는 여러 양상 중의 한 면이 애매성(ambiguity)이다. 어떤 단어나 구, 문장이 애매하다는 것은 그것이 논리적으로 가능한 해석을 둘 이상 내포한다는 뜻이다. 애매성은 크게 음성적 애매성, 어휘적 애매성, 그리고 구조적 애매성으로 구분할 수 있다. 음성적 애매성은 구어에서 동음어에 의해 문장의 의미가 달라지는 것을 말한다. 어휘적 애매성은 단어 자체에서 일어나는 것으로, 한 단어가 두 가지 이상의 의미를 갖는 데에 기인한다. 구조적 애매성은 문법구조에서 발생하는 것으로 구체적인 발생 요인에 따라 여러 유형이 있으며, 문장의 기저 구조에 의하여 설명될 수 있다. 애매한 표현은 흔히 문맥상 적절해 보이는 한 가지 뜻으로만 이해되어 그 밖의 가능한 해석은 무의식 중에 무시되는 경우가 많아 정확한 의사 교환을 어렵게 한다. 한편, 의도적으로 표현을 애매하게 하는 수도 있다. 특히 문학에서는 작가가 의도하는 바를 여러가지로 함축하여 암시함으로써 애매성에 의해 문학적 묘미를 더하기도 한다. 일반적으로 언어 행위에 있어서 애매성은 의사 소통에 혼란을 가져올 수 있다. 따라서 학생들에게 정확하고 분명한 의사 표현 능력과 아울러 문장의 애매성을 발견하여 문맥과 상황에 맞는 의미를 파악하여 이해하는 능력을 길러주는 것이 필요하다 하겠다.;The ultimate goal of language behaviour is to communicate through language. Therefore we must understand the various kinds of interrelations of the expression of language as a signaling system, and make use of them in actual language activity for good communication. Ambiguity is one of the aspects of linguistic expression. When a word, a phrase, or a sentence permits more than one logically possible interpretation, it is ambiguous. There are roughly three types of ambiguity: phonological ambiguity, lexical ambiguity, and structural ambiguity. In spoken language, the meaning of a sentence can be influenced by homonyms, and phonological ambiguity may arise. If a word may have more than one meaning, then it may cause lexical ambiguity. Structural ambiguity lies in the grammatical structure of a sentence, and it can be explained by way of the deep structure of the sentence. Structural ambiguity may be divided into several types according to its causes. Frequently, though not always, ambiguity of a sentence passes unnoticed in everyday language behavior, because the context is such that one of the possible meanings seems relevant. So miscommunication may arise. On the other hand, ambiguity may be employed purposely. In literature, especially, the author often makes his words or sentences ambiguous to allude multiple implications. In this way he adds literary delicacy and beauty to his works. Generally, ambiguity may cause confusion in communication. Students learning English need help to develop the ability to express their ideas clearly, discover the ambiguity in sentences, and understand the best possible meaning which agrees with the context and situation.
