Henry James소설에 나타난 개인의 의식에 대한 고찰

Abstract

Henry James(1843-1916)는 인간의 의식의 자유는 사회를 지배하는 소유적 가치관에서 벗어날 수 있는 대안이라고 생각하였다. 때문에 그에게 있어서 의식의 자유는 사회의 병폐를 고칠 수 있는 도덕성을 지닌 가치관이었다. 그러나 막상 그의 주제가 소설에 반영되었을 때는, 그의 의도와는 달리 의식의 자유를 구현하는 주인공들에서 그들이 거부한 기존사회에서 발견되는 이기적이며 소유적인 가치관이 발견된다. 또한 그의 소설은 오히려 소비 자본주의 사회로 발전하는데 기여하는 보수적인 역할을 맡아온 것으로 해석된다. 본 논문은 James자신의 의도와는 달리 모순점이 발견되며 또한 그의 소설이 보수적인 역할을 맡게 된 원인을 규명하고자 한다. 그런데 기존의 James의 소설 해석의 방법론은, 위의 문제에 적합하지 못하였다. 기존의 해석은 James의 소설을 현실과는 관계없는 순수한 문학 형식으로만 보는 형식주의 방법과 또한 소설에서 드러나는 모순은 James소설에서 미국적인 주제를 주장하기 위해 모순을 도외시 하는 주제접근법의 비평이 주류를 이루었지 때문이다. 그러나 근래에 들어서 Henry James의 작품에서 드러나는 모순점과 또한 작가로서 보수적인 역할을 맡게 된 이유에 대해서 좀더 많은 언급이 되고 있다. 그들의 비평적 방법론은 유물론에 입각한 역사주의로, James의 작가로서의 입장을 한 개인에 국한 시키지 않고 그가 속한 미국 사회 속에서 파악하려는 시도가 보인다. 그래서 James가 제시하는 의식의 자유한 문제를 단순히 한 개인의 사고의 모순으로 보는 것이 아니라 미국의 역사와 정치 사상과의 연관 속에서 파악하며 동시에 그 연관성을 언어의 형식 속에서 찾고있다. 따라서 본 논문에서 James의 의식의 자유와 문제점에 대해서 논함에 있어서 택하는 입장은 역사적 유물론적인 방법이다. James의 소설에서 문제점을 갖게 되는 이유는 그가 강조하는 의식의 자유의 문제는 미국을 자본주의 역사로 발전시킨 자유주의 사상과 연관성이 있으며 자유주의 사상의 모순점이 그의 소설의 모순점으로 드러나게 된다는 것이다. 위의 논지를 위해서 본 논문에서는 다음과 같은 과정을 취한다. 첫째로 James가 한 개인의 의식의 자유를 강조하는 배경은 그가 미국인에 대한 신념에서 출발한 것으로 그의 신념은 미국의 정치사상의 근간이 되며 또한 미국인의 가장 보편적인 생각이라는 점이다. 편의상 이 개념을 미국인의 심리에 깊이 자리잡고 있다고 생각하여 본 논문에서는 미국의 신화라고 하였다. 둘째로 그의 소설이 당시의 자본주의 경제체제에 보수적인 역할을 하였다는 점을 밝히기 위하여서 당시의 시대적인 특수성을 살펴보았다. 당시의 상황은 미국의 역사가 프론티어 개척을 바탕으로 한 부의 축적과 함께 소비 자본주의 사회로 돌입하던 시기였으며 아울러 점차 한 개인의 주체와 객관 세계와 소위 Marx가 말하는 물화현상을 초래하고 있던 시기였다. 이때의 정치 경제 사상은 미국이 자본을 축적하던 시기의 것과는 다르다는 것을 보였다. 마지막으로 James의 소설에서 그가 강조하는 의식의 자유가 당시의 정치 경제사상과의 연관성을 갖게 되는 원인을 살펴보았다. 그의 소설에서 미국의 신화가 드러나는 양상은 “renunciation”을 통한 의식의 자유라는 주제로 드러난다는데, 이 주제는 Emerson의 초절주의를 시대적인 상황에 맞추어 변형시킨 것이라는 점이다. 본론에서 다루는 역사적인 시기는 미국이 자본의 축적을 끝내고 소비사회로 진입하던 과정에서 어느 정도 소비사회로 발전된 시기이다. 그 역사적인 과정을 보여주는 작품으로는 The American과 The Portrait of a Lady을 책했다. Henry James의 소설의 모순과 보수성을 탐색하기 위해서 주인공의 의식의 문제점을 중심으로 규명하였다. 특히 자본주의 사회화의 연관성을 찾기 위해, 주인공들이 돈을 자신의 정신적인 이상을 실현하는 수단으로 생각하기 때문에 돈의 쓰임새를 중심으로 살폈다. The American에 대한 논의를 통해 미국인이 돈버는 일을 중단하고, 정신적인 가치를 위해서 돈을 쓰려하지만 오히려 교환경제논리를 반복하게 된다는 것을 보인다. 그럼에도 James는 미국인의 순수성을 강조한 결과 미국인들이 유럽의 문화를 구매하여 자신들의 신분을 과시하던 유한계급을 옹호하게 된다. 또한 유럽의 예술품을 모방하여 판매하기 시작한 당시의 미국소비사회의 논리를 뒷받침하게 된다는 것을 보인다. The Portarit of a Lady의 배경이 되는 역사적인 상황은 어느 정도 교환경제사회로 진입한 결과 상당히 물화가 진행된 시기이다. 이런 배경 속에서 주인공이 갖고있는 Emerson의 이상으로 하여 소비사회의 논리로 빠지게 되지만 James는 의식의 자유를 강조한다. 그리하여 이미 한 개인의 주체성이 문제시되고 있는 상황에서 개인의 자유에 대한 신념을 보여준는 것은 단지 자본주의 사회가 유지되기 위해 인간의 주체의 가능성에 대한 신화를 제시하는 것에 다름 아니다. 이상 논의를 통하여 본 논문에서는, James의 소설에서의 의식의 자유라는 주제는 그 근거가 되는 미국의 신화적인 역사관의 한계와 이미 물화된 시기의 문제점으로 인하여 미국이 소비 자본주의 사회로 발전하는데 오히려 보수적인 역할을 담당하였다는 것을 규명하는 바이다. ; Henry James(1843-1916) conceives freedom of consciousness as a way of overcoming the possessive values that dominate a capitalist society. However, when he tries to show this theme in his novels, contrary to his intentions, the main characters with such freedom of consciousness are found to have the egoistical and possessive values focusing in the established society that they had rejected. Furthermore, his novels have rather contributed to the development of modern consumer-oriented society. This dissertation aims to discover the reasons behind the discrepancies between his intention and his novels. The existing methodologies for the interpretation of James’s novels, however, are not adequate for such a study since the established methods consist of the formalist approach of taking James’s novels as pure literary forms detached from reality and of the thematic approach that ignores such contradictions in order to emphasize the “American theme” in James’s novels. Recently, reasons behind the inconsistencies revealed in James’s novels and the conservative role that henry James has taken have been examined through the methodology of historical materialism. This approach attempts to view literary works of an individual writer in the context of the society to which the it belongs. Thus, the problem of the freedom of consciousness suggested by James is percieved in the context of history and the political thoughts of the Americans rather than as resulting from the inconsistencies of one individual, and such relationships are being examined in the linguistic forms. Similarly, this dissertation takes the historical materialist approach in discussing the problem of the freedom of consciousness. The reason behind such a problem in James’s novels bears relationship to liberalism which has developed in the history of capitalism in America, and the contradictions within liberalism reveal themselves to be the contradictions in his novels. This dissertation takes the following procedures. First the setting behind James’s emphasis on the individual’s freedom of consciousness starts from his faith in the moral possibility of the Americans, and such faith is the basis of American liberalism. For convenience, such concept will be called “The American Myth” in this dissertation. Second, in order to prove that his novel have taken the conservative role in the capitalistic economic system of the time, certain characteristics of the contemporary period have been examined. At the time, exploration of the American frontier had reached its end, and American history was entering the phase of the consumer-oriented capitalistic society. That is, it was the time when one individual’s autonomy and the objective world were becoming “reified” as Marx called it. The economic and political thought of the time was clearly different from that of the period when America was accumulation capital. Lastly, the way in which the relationship between the theme of freedom of consciousness and the economic and political thought of his time has been analyzed. The American myth is expressed as the theme of the freedom of consciousness through renunciation in James’s works. The conservative role of James’s novels arises as a result of the transformation of Emerson’s optimistic transcendentalism to adapt to the conditions of James’s period. The period chosen in the discussion extends from the beginning of the consumer society after the period of the accumulation of capital has ended to that of a fully developed consumer society in America. The American and The portrait of a Lady have been analyzed as works reflecting such a historical process. The contradiction and conservatism of James’s novels are examined from the point of the characters’ consciousness. Since the characters use money as a way of realizing their spiritual ideal, the expenditure of money is analyzed in detail in order to find the novel’s relationship to capitalistic society. In the American, and American stops making money and attempts to use money for spiritual value. However, he ends up repeating the economic logic of exchange. However, since James at least values the character’s attempt to find the spiritual values he shows the moral regeneration though renunciation. Thus, the novelist unintentionally endorses the wealthy upper class of the time who tried to display their wealth and status though the purchase of European cultural objects. I addition, the novel also seems to have supported the economic logic of American consumer society of the time that was emerging by imitation European art works. The historical setting behind The Portrait of a Lady is the period well in the way of ‘reification’ as a result of having sufficiently progressed as an exchange economy society. Under such a setting, the Emersonian ideal merely falls into the logic of the consumer society. However, because James’s emphasizes the possibility of freedom if consciousness, he conceals the problem of retaining man’s freedom of consciousness in the period where autonomy and individual has been already problematized. The theme of the freedom of consciousness in James’s novels is proven to have rather supported the development of consumer-oriented American capitalist society due to the problems of the limitation of the historical perspective of the American Myth that lies basis to the theme and of the already ‘reified’ condition of the period.
