During the past two decades, the improvement of communicative competence has received increasing attention among educators. Student's ability to engage in meaningful conversational interaction in the target language is considered an important goal of second language education. This shift of emphasis has generated a change of pronunciation teaching. In other words, there has been an appeal to adopt a top-down approach to focus more on suprasegmental features, rather than adhere to the traditional bottom-up approach based on isolated or contrasted sounds. However, due to their inherent complexity and to the ensuing difficulty in learning and mastering them, suprasegmental features were ignored for many years in language teaching and learning. The recent decades have witnessed the evolution of highly advanced visual equipment with applicants for all areas of English instruction, including pronunciation. The development of sophisticated technology such as multimedia computer has led to the creation of multimedia courseware that is able to quickly and accurately display the acoustic and spectrographic patternsn on a computer screen. Multimedia courseware can provide the language learners with real-time information about the salient acoustic properties of their pronunciation. By showing the exact features that need changing, visual displays can instantly provide an objective measurement by which students and teachers can evaluate students' speech production. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of using the multimedia courseware on the improvement of Korean middle school students' pronunciation ability in English. The subjects of this study were first-year middle school students. The experimental group used a multimedia courseware designed to train their suprasegmental features by showing comparisons of the visual display of their pronunciation with that of a native speaker. The results and suggestions of the study are as follows: First, the experimental group showed significant improvement in pronouncing suprasegmental features. As the students were able to see immediate displays of their speech patterns and match them on a split screen with target patterns, they can quickly learn to recognize pitch, stress, intonation with the aid of reliable and precise feedback. Second, using multimedia courseware in pronunciation teaching and learning had a positive effect on the higher-level students and the lower-level student. Especially, using multimedia courseware had more positive effects on the lower-level students that the higher since multimedia courseware can provide more helpful feedback. Third, linking and deletion in pronouncing English can be learned by Korean students more effectively than word stress and sentence stress by using multimedia courseware. These results suggest that teachers should attach importance to the suprasegmental features in the teaching of English pronunciation and they imply that multimedia courseware should be a helpful and effective means of English pronunciation learning and teaching. Multimedia courseware is one example of how computer-assisted instruction can be utilized to enhance English pronunciation learning and teaching. One should bear in mind, however, the importance of developing and implementing innovative classroom activities in the classroom that effectively and appropriately utilize computer instruction, e.g., a balance of controlled drills and uncontrolled activities are necessary to allow students to transfer their linguistic knowledge into more authentic communicative situations. In addition, more experimental research is needed to help determine the most effective methods by to carry out this type of computerized instruction as a tool in English pronunciation instruction.;현대 사회에서 영어 교육의 목표는 유의미한 의사소통 능력의 함양이다.
