한국 민속무용에 내재된 장자의 덕(德) 개념 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 민속무용의 미학적 논의에 장자(莊子)의 ‘덕(德)’ 개념을 수용하여 민속무용의 주체인 무용수와 관련한 다양한 의미들을 살펴보고자 하였다. 한국 전통 춤은 정신문화를 앞세우고 있기 때문에 춤의 형태가 구체적으로 드러나지 않더라도 내면적인 정신이나 심성을 표현하고 있다면 그 자체를 정신 미(精神美)로 파악하여 예술미(藝術美)로 인정한다. 따라서 춤에서 나타나는 정신 미를 어떻게 글로 설명해내는가는 한국 전통 춤의 미학 논의에서 다루어져야 할 가장 근본적인 주제라고 할 수 있다. 그리하여 본고에서는 한국 전통 춤의 한 분과를 차지하는 민속무용 안에서 신체와 감성을 통해 표현해내는 무용수의 춤사위 및 정신 경지와 관련된 특성인 ‘자연지향성’, ‘개체의 고유성’ 그리고 ‘열린 소통의 가능성’을 장자의 ‘덕’ 개념을 통해 구체적으로 분석하였다. 이러한 논의를 위해 먼저 민속무용에 대한 기본적인 특성을 살피고, 예술논의에서 장자 철학이 지니는 위상 및 장자의 ‘덕’개념과 ‘도(道) ‧ 기(氣) ‧ 신(神)’ 개념과의 유기적인 관련성을 살펴봄으로써 ‘덕’의 고유한 특성을 분석하였다. 그리고 장자의 ‘덕’개념이 민속무용과 어떻게 상호 연결될 수 있는지에 대해 모색해 봄으로써 이것이 민속무용 논의에서 실질적 토대를 이루는 주요 개념으로 상정될 수 있음을 규명하였다. 이와 같은 본고의 민속무용과 장자사상에 대한 예비적 고찰과 장자의 ‘덕’개념에 대한 이해는 기존의 민속무용 연구에서 무용수의 정신경지와 관련해 ‘도(道)’개념을 중심으로 연구되어 온 것과 달리 주요 미학 범주로 여기지 않았던 ‘덕’ 개념을 중심으로 협의적 관점에서 구체적이고 면밀하게 분석했다는 점에서 차별 점을 지닌다. 본고에서는 민속무용 안에 내재된 장자의 ‘덕’개념을 분석하기 위해「동래학춤」을 임의로 선 정하여 민속무용의 특성인 ‘자연지향성’, ‘개체의 고유성’ 그리고 ‘열린 소통의 가능성’을 분석해보았다. 「동래학춤」은 즉흥적 요소가 춤을 구성하는 주된 요인이 되므로 무용수 개인의 고유한 특성이 춤을 통해 여과 없이 보여지고, 현재까지도 열린 마당을 중심으로 춤이 연행됨으로써 민속무용의 고유한 특성이 훼손되지 않고 보존되고 있다는 점에서 분석대상으로 선정하게 되었다. 이를 기반으로 제 3장 논의에서「동래학춤」분석을 위해 사용된 요소인 춤사위, 복식, 반주음악 그리고 무대 공간을 살펴 본 결과, 자연에 순응하고 조화를 본받아 자연의 대도(大道)와 합일(合一)을 이루고자 하는 무용수의 정신경지 및 각각의 무용수 안에 내재된 ‘덕’이 춤을 통해 발현되면서 다양한 학의 형상을 표현해내고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 또한 모든 만물에 내재된 장자의 ‘덕’ 개념을 통해 시비(是非)와 차별(差別)의 대립 관계에서 벗어나 무용수, 관객, 악사 간의 열린 소통이 가능해 질 수 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 본 작품 분석을 통한 민속무용의 논의에서 장자의 ‘덕’ 개념의 수용은 연구방법에 있어 미학적인 기준을 마련해 줄 수 있고 춤 현상을 언어화 할 수 있다는 점에서 의미를 지닌다. 또한 민속무용에서의 무용수의 신체와 움직임의 표현에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시한다는 점에서 그 의미를 찾을 수 있다. 마지막으로 민속무용의 가치와 의의를 되짚어 볼 수 있는 계기를 마련한다는 점에서 의미를 지닌다. 본 연구에서는 장자의 ‘덕’ 개념을 수용하여 민속무용의 논의를 실제 무용작품에서 예증함으로써 민속무용의 미학적 논의의 새로운 가능성을 제시하였다. 장자 철학을 통한 한국 전통 춤 연구가 아직까지 활발하지 못한 현 시점에서 본 연구가 후속 연구들에 의미 있는 시사점을 제공함으로써 민속무용의 미학적 연구와 관련해 하나의 관점으로 제시 될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.;This study is to look into various meanings of the folk dance in aesthetical discussion regarding the dancers who are the subject of the folk dance based on ‘virtue(德)’ concept of Zhuangzi(莊子, 365-290 B.C.). Korean classic dance is based on the mental beauty(精神美), therefore a folk dance that is not specifically formed, but shows inherent mental status or nature of itself, is admitted as artistic beauty(藝術美), recognizing the dance as a mental beauty. Therefore, it is the most essential issue how to describe mental beauty expressed in the folk dance which would be treated in aesthetics discussions of the Korean classic dance. So, this paper concretely analyzed dancer’s movements expressed through dancer’s body and sensitivity, and characteristics such as ‘nature-orientation’, ‘uniqueness of an individual’ and ‘possibility of open communication’ related to a mental portion of the folk dance which is a department in the Korean classic dance through ‘virtue’ concept of Zhuangzi. To discuss these matters, I analyzed unique characteristics of ‘virtue’ by studying basic characteristics of the folk dance and by understanding organic relevance between Zhuangzi’s ‘virtue’ concept and concepts of moral principle(道) ‧ spirit(氣) ‧ god(神). And, by seeking how Zhuangzi’s ‘virtue’ concept is mutually connected with the folk dance, I found the connectivity can be a main concept which is an actual foundation in discussions of the folk dance. Preview of Zhuangzi’s ideology and understanding of Zhuangzi's ‘virtue’ concept in this paper, which are specifically and carefully analyzed focusing on ‘virtue’ concepts that are usually not regarded as an aesthetical aspect, are different from the studies which is focused on moral principle‘(道)’ related to mental status of a dancer in conventional studies of the folk dance. In order to recognize ‘virtue’ concept of Zhuangzi which is inherent in the folk dance in this paper, I selected 「Dongrae crane dance」 to analyze characteristics of the folk dance such as ‘nature-orientation’, ‘uniqueness of an individual’, and ‘possibility of open communication’. I selected 「Dong-rae crane dance」 because improvised elements is a main characteristic of it, unique characteristics of a dancer can be seen directly from it, and traditional characteristics of the dance are reserved in the currently performed dance around ‘open stage’. Based on these, in chapter 3, by looking into ‘dances’, ‘costumes’, ‘accompaniment music’ and ‘stage’ of 「Dong-rae crane dance」, I found the dancer's mental status that is to adjust to the mother nature in harmony, thus he would achieve to become one with mother nature. In addition, it is found that open communication is possible between dancers, audiences, and musicians, breaking away from a contraposition relation between right and wrong(是非), and discriminations(差別) through ‘virtue’ concept of the Zhuangzi which is inherent in all things. Acceptance of Zhuangzi’s ‘virtue’ concept of this analysis in discussion of the folk dance means that aesthetical reference can be set in research methodology, and abstract and arbitrary dance can be described in language. Also, it represents much that it suggests new point of view of dancer’s body and presenting movement in the folk dance. Finally, it has a meaning that it gives an opportunity to have second thought about the value and meaning of the folk dance. This research proposes new possibility of an aesthetical discussion of the folk dance by illustrating a discussion of the folk dance with an actual dance, accepting Zhuangzi’s ‘virtue’ concept. By providing meaningful hint to following studies at the time when studies of the Korean traditional dance through Zhuangzi’s philosophy is yet spiritless, this study can be proposed as a point of view related to an aesthetic study of the folk dance.
