신문화사(The New Cultural History)를 통해 프랑스 혁명 깊이 읽기

Abstract

The new cultural history is an attractive field of history which tells us about a method of seeing newly things overlooked through 'culture' which have not be acknowledged as a historical material. This attraction caused studies of the new cultural history to be done actively in Korea. There have been a continuous attempt to apply it to history education. Few studies have been conducted to explore the practical application of the results of studies of, and Korean versions of foreign books on, the new cultural history to history education, and to use the new cultural history for the teaching of world history. This research reconstructs contents appropriate for the level of students, based on the rich fruit of studies of the new cultural history. It aims to seek for concrete methods applicable to the teaching of world history through the reconstruction and to explore the possibility of their application. This research chose as a topic applied 'the French Revolution.' This is because any methods were not suggested which give body to elements of the new cultural history although the existing textbooks contain many of those elements based not only on the world historic importance of the revolution but also on the rich fruit of studies of it. So, we designed a class targeting high school students by making worksheets using the new cultural history as a method for bodying out the above elements. We organized worksheets on the execution of Louis XVI, women's activities and radicality. The class was done by a high school teacher. The worksheets were prepared by students in the form of group activity during the class. Then, a group discussion was conducted. After the class, we analyzed worksheets written by the students. In conclusion, our analysis confirmed the following two things. First of all, students who had a basic understanding of the French Revolution before the class showed a deepened ability to explore through our worksheets. But, other students who did not learn about the revolution due to the present curriculum had a little difficulty in writing the worksheets. It can be drawn from that the basic comprehension of the French Revolution is a prerequisite for preparing the relevant worksheets. Then, teachers can use the lesson plan of this research without any excessive burden if they have rich teaching experiences although they lack specialized knowledge of the new cultural history. Thus, it has significance that the above worksheets were completed not by teachers' unilateral class but by students' self-directed learning.;신문화사(The New Cultural History)는 역사에서 우리가 미처 보지 못하고 지나쳐온 것을 그동안 사료로 인정되지 않았던 ‘문화’를 통해 새롭게 보는 방법을 알려주는 매력 있는 역사학이다. 이러한 매력으로 국내에서도 지금까지 신문화사 연구가 활발히 진행되어 왔으며, 역사교육에도 이를 활용하려는 시도가 계속 이어져왔다. 하지만 신문화사의 많은 연구 성과와 번역서들을 실제적으로 역사교육에 어떻게 적용시킬지에 대한 제대로 된 연구는 없었고, 세계사 교육에서 신문화사를 활용하려는 연구도 드물다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 신문화사의 풍부한 연구 성과를 바탕으로 학생 수준에 맞게 적합한 내용을 재구성 하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 세계사 교육에 활용할 수 있는 실제 활용 가능하며 구체적인 방안을 모색하여 이를 실제 적용하여 그 가능성 여부를 탐구하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 본 연구에서는 ‘프랑스 혁명’을 적용 주제로 선정하였다. 그 이유는 프랑스 혁명의 세계사적인 중요성은 물론 풍부한 연구 성과를 바탕으로 기존 교과서에 신문화사적 요소가 많이 담겨져 있지만 이를 구현할 방법은 제시되어 있지 않기 때문이다. 따라서 이를 구현하기 위한 방안으로 신문화사를 활용한 활동지를 제작하여 고등학생 대상의 수업을 기획하였다. 루이 16세의 처형과 여성의 활동, 과격성에 관한 활동지를 구성하여 현직 교사의 진행 아래 그룹 활동을 통해 이를 수행한 후 그룹 토의를 전개하였다. 수업 후 연구자는 학생들이 작성한 활동지를 분석하여 다음의 사실을 확인하였다. 첫째, 프랑스 혁명에 대해 이전에 기본 이해가 있는 학생의 경우에는 본 연구의 활동지를 통해 심화된 탐구능력을 보였다. 다만, 현행 교과 과정 상 프랑스 혁명을 배우지 않아 기본 이해가 안 된 학생의 경우에는 본 연구의 활동지에 다소 어려움을 느꼈다. 따라서 본 연구의 활동지 수행에 있어서 프랑스 혁명에 대한 기본 이해가 바탕이 되어야 한다. 둘째, 교사가 신문화사에 대해 전문 지식이 없어도 교사의 경력이 충분히 있다면, 교사의 과도한 부담 없이 본 연구의 수업안을 활용할 수 있다는 가능성을 확인했다. 이에 교사의 일방적인 수업이 아니라 학생들이 자기 주도 학습을 통해 활동지 수행이 이루어 진 점은 의의가 있다.
