영화 <킹덤 오브 헤븐>에 비친 십자군 전쟁

Abstract

유럽이 일반적으로 생각하는 십자군 전쟁은 이슬람 세력으로부터 예루살렘 성지(聖地)를 회복하려는 종교적 열정에서 비롯된 성전(聖戰)이다. 반면 이슬람의 입장에서는 평화롭게 살고 있는 자신들의 땅에 십자군이 들이닥쳐 학살과 약탈 등을 자행한 엄연한 침략 전쟁이다. 근세 이후 유럽 문명이 세계를 주도하게 되면서 십자군 전쟁의 역사는 유럽 중심의 역사관이 가장 널리 인식되어 왔다. 이에 따라 현행 교과서 역시 유럽 중심의 시각이 반영되어 십자군 전쟁을 성지 탈환이라는 성전에 초점을 맞추면서 서술하고 있는 경우가 많고, 이슬람의 시각에서 비춰지는 십자군의 범죄 행위는 간과하고 있는 실정이다. 이러한 학습은 학생들로 하여금 유럽 중심의 십자군 전쟁의 역사와 개념만이 전부인 것으로 생각하게 하며 보다 공정하고 폭넓은 시각으로 십자군 전쟁의 역사를 직시하지 못하게 만든다. 따라서 본 연구는 십자군 전쟁에 대한 교과서의 유럽 중심적 시각을 극복할 수 있는 방안에 대한 필요성에 주목하여, 유럽 중심의 역사관에서 벗어나 십자군 전쟁의 역사를 전개하고 있는 영화 <킹덤 오브 헤븐>을 활용한 실질적이고 구체적인 수업 방안의 개발을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 십자군 전쟁에 대한 현행 교과서 서술과 영화 <킹덤 오브 헤븐>을 각각 분석하였고, 그 분석 결과를 토대로 수업에 반영할 수 있는 내용으로 재구성한 수업 방안을 개발하였다. 영화 <킹덤 오브 헤븐>을 통해 유럽 중심적 역사 해석에서 벗어나 보다 폭넓은 시각에서 십자군 전쟁의 역사를 비판적으로 재조명해 봄으로써 학습자의 관점에서 역사를 재구성해 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것이 본 수업의 목표이다. 수업 목표의 달성을 위해 진위형과 서술형으로 구성된 활동지를 제작하였다. 개발한 수업 방안을 실제 교육 현장에 적용해 본 결과, 이 수업 방안이 십자군 전쟁에 대한 학습자의 인식의 폭을 확대시키는 데 긍정적으로 작용하여 본 연구의 교육적 활용 가치를 확인할 수 있었다.;In general, the Crusades is considered to be a Holy War resulted from religious passion to take the Holy Land of Jerusalem back from Islamic power in Europe. While, from the Islamic point of view, the Crusades is an undeniable aggressive war to massacre and pillage civilians in their peaceful lands. The history of the Crusades has been widely recognized based on the Eurocentric historical viewpoint, since the world has been led by European civilization after the modern times. For that reason, in most of the current textbooks which reflect the Eurocentric historical viewpoint, the Crusades is described focusing on a Holy War to recapture the Holy Land, and the criminal behaviors of the crusaders from the Islamic perspective are being overlooked. This lesson may be difficult for students to understand the substance of the Crusades, since it only provides the Eurocentric narrow-minded viewpoints. This study is, therefore, designed to develop a practical and concrete teaching plan using a film, <Kingdom of Heaven> that tells the history of the Crusades from a different perspective from existing textbooks, as plans to get pass the Eurocentric perspective in the textbooks of the Crusades are keenly needed. For achieving this purpose, the current textbooks and the film of the Crusades were respectively analyzed and a teaching plan is devised to help students understand the substance of the Crusades more clearly by complementing the description of textbooks utilizing the film based on analysis results. This study also aims to provide an opportunity to reconstruct the history of the Crusades from the learners' perspectives by critically reviewing both opinions of Christianity and of Islam from a balanced consideration and by shedding new light on it through the film which describes it, breaking away from the Eurocentric historical analysis. For this study, worksheets consisting of true-false statements and a descriptive statement were produced and distributed. When actually applying a developed teaching guideline to educational sites, it was found that it educationally deserves to be used in actual classroom, since it had a positive effect on the expansion of students' cognition of the Crusades.
