Abstract
The most positive activity of human is Art in disclosing unconsciousness to consciousness. Art expresses things impossible to represent and shows aspects of a new world. Through works, artists discover the elements of unconsciousness which exist disordered under the judgment of consciousness. And they lead such elements to the mental world. So they provide appreciators with a valuable opportunity to waken them spiritually. This study analyzed the dance work 「Hidden Truth」on the relation between self and shadow with their developmental possibility from the Theory of Shadow by Carl. G. Jung, a psychologist. Shadow, the theme of the work, is recognized as inferior and inconsistent one owing to self-consciousness and other exterior factors. So it's a repressed unconscious being. Carl Jung maintains human discovers his another self through the process leading shadow of his dark side to consciousness. And he can achieve self realization only when he transforms negative shadow into positive one. The work of 「Hidden Truth」, as the theme of shadow by Carl Jung, composes the contents of the Shadow Theory, which mentions about recognition and change of shadow as human's unconscious dark side, into 3 sequences. And it expresses the contents through an objet, symbolic space and moving patterns, and properties of dancer's movements. Followings are overall characteristics of choreography to express the contents of the Shadow Theory in every sequence. First, conflict, when self discovers shadow, is the contents of sequence 1. Through install of an objet, it reveals invisible shadow visually. The stage has the symbolic meaning as the unconscious space, and the space an object locates is divided into the area of shadow. Limits motion of dancers in the limited space and presents conflict of self through the characteristic movements of disregard and gaze toward an objet. So, shadow is expressed not only as an existence to arouse self to the negative emotion but as the object of a longing. Second, an attempt of self to meet shadow is the contents of sequence 2. An object doesn't move and maintains the area of shadow as it is. Dancers develop actively relation of self and shadow through powerful and straight moving pattern relating to the object. And, they use falling and recovering, motion to spout energy powerfully, height changes of motion as the properties of motion. It expresses self to try to approach shadow, also every existence has property of both poles through the asymmetric image of a body. Third, meeting of shadow and self is the contents of sequence 3. Transforms the objet into the various forms and changes a space symbolizing unconsciousness into the one of consciousness. Dancers moves to the center of the stage. And, it expresses, by meeting shadow, self feels vitality with pain keeping alive in three dimensions using the feature of wriggling motion through the object. The work is completed showing that self accepted shadow through positioning the objet together with dancers in the coda unlike the beginning. So, selecting shadow which exists in the depth of the invisible mentality as the theme, the work 「Hidden Truth」 intends to communicate it as the dancing art. And, with critical mind, it aims at pointing that modern people may not recognize their shadow. The work gives a message persons have to recognize, accept and change their shadow of a dark side through language of symbolic and abstract movements and stage elements. In addition, it reminds us of an existence of shadow we human beings can't feel because of consciousness. So this work aims at offering an opportunity to reflect on whether there's shadow of our own we can't reveal or not.
