태양의 서커스에 나타난 무용의 예술적 의미에 관한 연구

Abstract

현대인들은 삶을 향유하고자 하는 욕구가 증대됨에 따라 문화예술에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 많은 분야 중 특히 공연예술은 관객에게 시각적으로 화려하게 즐거움을 선사하고 정서적으로는 심미적인 경험을 갖게 하는 특성을 가지고 있어 대중들의 흥미를 자극시키고 있다. 형식미와 정서적인 가치를 가지고 있는 이러한 공연예술은 최첨단 기술과 다양한 여러 예술장르를 통합하는 총체극의 형태를 띄며 발전되어 가고 있다. 과거 ‘지상 최대의 쇼(The Greatest Show On Earth)’로 불리우며 대중들의 오락과 놀이를 도맡아 오던 서커스는 20세기에 들어서면서 과학의 발전으로 새로운 시각 매체와 다양한 오락들로 인해 사양 산업으로 전락하고 말았다. 이에 1983년 길거리 곡예사들이 창단한 ‘태양의 서커스(Cirque du Soleil)’는 순수한 인체의 표현을 중심으로 동물의 출연을 배제시키면서 극적인 스토리를 가진 주제로 작품을 전개하는 한편 최첨단 테크놀로지의 도입과 타 예술장르를 서커스에 융합함으로써 새로운 공연형태 양식을 창조해내었다. ‘뉴 서커스(New Circus)’ 혹은 ‘아트 서커스(Art Circus)’ 라 불리우는 태양의 서커스는 기술과 예술이 한데 어우러진 총체극으로 서커스에 대한 대중들의 흥미와 관심을 다시금 불러일으켜 예술적으로 또한 상업적으로도 성공하게 되었다. 이러한 태양의 서커스는 곡예에 표현성과 예술성을 높이기 위하여 무용을 도입하였는데 서커스가 몸의 행위를 동반하며 극을 진행하고 있다는 점에서 무용은 다른 어떠한 요소보다도 중요시 되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 태양의 서커스의 대표 안무가 데브라 브라운(Debra Brown)의 작품「알레그리아(Alegria)」(1994), 「퀴담(Quidam)」(1996), 「라 누바(La Nouva)」(1998)에 나타난 무용적 요소를 살펴봄으로써 태양의 서커스에 나타난 무용의 예술적 의미와 새로운 형태의 가치를 찾는데 그 목적을 가지고 있다. 위의 세 작품에 나타난 무용은 작품의 특성과 분위기에 적절하게 도입되어작품의 주제를 가시화하고, 주요 요소들을 유기적으로 결합하는 형태로 사용되어져 곡예의 다양한 표현성과 매끄러운 연결성을 가지게 하며 작품의 예술적 완성도를 높이고 있다. 또한 아티스트의 감성을 무용적 움직임으로 표출함으로써 캐릭터의 개성을 뚜렷이 나타내고, 시각적인 미를 창출해내어 관객들을 심미적인 경험으로 이끌고 있다. 활용되어지는 그 무용의 종류에는 발레에서부터 힙합, 민속춤에 이르기까지 다양하며 작품의 구성방식에 있어서도 솔로, 듀엣, 군무 등의 무용형태를 반영하고 있다. 이러한 안무와 움직임 측면에서의 무용의 도입은 인간의 사상과 감정을 신체를 통해 표현한다는 무용예술에서의 예술적 의미를 적극적으로 활용한 것으로 무용 고유의 특질을 살려 사용되어 졌다. 이와 같이 종식되어가던 서커스를 최첨단 기술과 여러 예술장르의 융합을 통한 혁신적인 공연으로 재창조 해내며 21세기에 어울리는 공연으로 탈바꿈시킨 태양의 서커스에 나타난 무용의 예술적 의미를 밝힘으로써 무한한 발전가능성을 지닌 무용의 예술적 영역확장을 제시하고 대중들에게 새로운 형태의 무용의 예술적 가치를 폭넓게 인식시키는데 도움이 될 것으로 사료된다.;These days, as the desire for enjoying life increases, general public of the modern society are getting more interested in the culture & art. Especially, among many fields, performing arts have the properties to present audience with gorgeous delight visually in addition to the aesthetic experience so it's stimulating their interest. Such performing arts having the beauty of form & emotional value are developing as the form of the total theatre to integrate the latest technology & the various art genres. The circus, which was called ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’ in the past and undertaken entertainment & play of the public, degraded into the decaying industry owing to the new visual media & diverse amusements resulted from the scientific developments since the 21st century. And, Cirque du Soleil, founded by street acrobats in 1983, created a new performance not only through excluding performance by animals centered on the pure expressions of a body & unfolding the work as the theme having the dramatic story but through combining other art genres with the circus & introducing state-of-the-art technology. Cirque du Soleil called ‘New Circus’ or ‘Art Circus’, aroused the interest of the public in the circus as the total theatre of the technology & arts and made a success artistically & commercially. Furthermore, Cirque du Soleil introduced dancing to improve expressivity & artistry of acrobatics, and dancing is regarded to be a more important one in that circus is accompanied by acts of a body and proceeded through them. This study intends to inspect dancing elements in 「Alegria」, 「Quidam」, 「La Nouba」by Debra Brown, a representative choreographer of Cirque du Soleil and discover the artistic meaning of dance & value of a new form shown from Cirque du Soleil. Dancing in the 3 works above visualizes the theme of the work through proper integrating into the feature & atmosphere of the work, and obtains the various expression of the acrobatics & smooth connection leading to artistic perfection through combining main elements systematically. In addition, it shows unique individuality of characters by expressing artists' sensibilities into dancing motion and leads audience to aesthetic experience by creating visual beauty. The kinds of dancing shown in the performance vary from the ballet, hip-hop to the folk dance, and in the composition of the work, it reflects dancing forms of solo, duet & group dancing. Such introduction of dancing in the aspects of choreography & motion is the one to use actively artistic meaning of dancing art which expresses thought & emotion of human through a body, and it makes the most use of the property of dancing own. This study is regarded to contribute on presenting artistic expansion of dancing area having infinite developmental potentials and making the public recognize artistic value of a new dancing through examining artistic meaning of dancing in Cirque du Soleil which was recreated through innovative combination of the latest technology with the diverse art genres.
