Abstract

This dissertation intended to investigate the expressional style and the aesthetic quality by analyzing the futuristic elements contained in space age fashion, and also to observe the effect of space age fashion represented in contemporary fashion. The final intention was to present the modern design applying the futuristic elements in space age fashion. There found the origin of design which reflected the futuristic elements at space age fashion in 1960s. Many designers developed the space age fashion into various styles by the influence of the spirit of the age. Space age fashion was expressed as a experimental and avant grade costume with its color, textile, style containing the futuristic elements. In addition, it attempted its experimental and artistic quality. The aesthetic quality of space age fashion should be characterized as shiny slick, transparency, metallic effect, and glitter and explained as follows. First, shiny slick quality : The development of scientific technology and the interest of universe was reflected in space age fashion. Future image was manifested by slick metallic and vinyl coated material. Second, transparency quality : The continuity of space showed as the universe concept was appeared as the mysterious and pure image. The space travel of 1960s increased the interest of transparent and invisible things, and inspired a new style of fashion. The three transparent effect was attained by using different materials and method. One would be the perfect transparent effect obtained by using vinyl, acolyte plate, plastic and cellophane, and another would be the sheer effect gained by using see-through material such as new synthetic fiber, organza, organdy and chiffon. The other was the mesh effect by using net and cut-out texture. Third, metallic effect : it was expressed by the pursuit of the luminous effect made by formated movement with the combination of the materials such as stainless steel, coated iron, aluminum plate and plastic disc. Metallic material was used to create the vision of high technology and the world of future as a new challenge. Finally, glitter quality : Shining sparkle and fantastic surroundings, like lucid effect of light and luster of gem found in space, was to express femininity and elegance. New technology fabric, sheer textile, and materials attached pallette, spangles, sequins crystal beads was used to obtain glitter effect and also the materials which reflected the light such as pieces of mirror and plastic. Space age fashion containing the qualities mentioned above introduced in ordinary fashion as a futuristic design in 1990s and it raised the interest and the attention of consumers. Futuristic material such as vinyl and enamel, not likely used in ordinary fashion introduced in clothing and accessory, and appeared as various styles. It was led to a new trend. A trend was existed in hi fashion through street fashion beyond the classes, and it revealed that the experimental and avant garde design used to be regarded as a revolution of fashion placed itself as an ordinary fashion. Therefore, the interest and attention of space age fashion increased and it took its place as a fashion theme both in ordinary fashion and avant garde fashion. Three Modern creative designs with the motif of space was presented, and they applied the futuristic elements with the base of study on space age fashion. In addition, three modern and avant garde designs developed the futuristic elements in form, textile and color in accordance with aesthetic quality of space age fashion. The first design modernly expressed space image by the mixture of shiny slick and transparency. The second design experimentally showed the continuity of space by using aesthetic quality of glitter, metallic effect and transparency of space age fashion. The third design represented the aesthetic quality of metallic effect and transparency of space age fashion by the use of metallic materials.;본 연구의 목적은 1960년대 Space Age Fashion의 디자인 속에 포함된 미래지향적 요소를 분석함으로서 다양한 표현양식과 미적특징을 고찰하고, 현대패션에 나타난 Space Age Fashion의 영향을 연구하며, 이를 기반으로 Space Age Fashion의 미래적 요소를 도입한 현대적 창작 디자인을 제시하는데 있다. Space Age Fashion은 1960년대 우주여행에 대한 관심에서 영감을 받아 시도된 새로운 스타일이었다. 여러 디자이너에 의해 시대정신의 영향을 받아 다양한 표현 양식으로 전개된 Space Age Fashion은 미래적 요소가 담긴 컬러, 소재, 스타일로써 실험적이며 아방가르드한 의상으로 표현되어 그 실험성과 작품성이 시도되었다. Space Age Fashion을 연구한 결과 그 미적 특성을 Shiny Slick, Transparency, Metallic Effect, Glitter로 구분하였는데 이는 다음과 같다. 첫째, Shiny Slick한 특성은 과학 기술의 발달과 우주에 대한 관심이 Space Age Fashion에 반영된 것으로 매끈한 메탈릭 섬유와 비닐 코팅된 재료로서 미래지향적 이미지를 표현하였다. 둘째, Transparency한 특성은 신비하고 순수한 이미지로 우주적 관념을 표현하여 공간의 연속성을 나타냈다. 투명함(transparency)은 소재나 표현방법에 의해 세가지 효과로 나타났는데, 그 효과는 비닐, 아크릴판, 플라스틱, 셀로판 등을 이용하여 완전히 투시되는 효과와 신소재 합성사나 오간자, 오간디, 쉬폰 등의 see-through에서 나타나는 sheer한 효과, net 조직이나 cut-out 방법의 mesh한 효과로 나타났다. 셋째, Metallic Effect는 스테인레스 스틸, 코팅 강철, 알루미늄 판, 플라스틱 디스크 등의 소재를 조형적으로 구성하여 움직임에 따른 빛의 효과를 추구한 특성으로 나타났다. 금속성의 소재는 high-tech vision과 미래세계의 창조를 위해 실험적으로 사용되었다. 넷째, Glitter한 효과는 우주에서 느껴지는 영롱한 빛의 효과, 보석의 광채와 같이 빛나는 반짝거림, 환상적인 분위기를 여성스럽고 우아하게 표현한 특성이었다. New high-tech섬유와 sheer한 직물에 paillettes, spangles, sequins, 크리스탈 비즈 등을 붙인 소재, 거울, 플라스틱 조각 등과 같이 빛을 반사하는 성질을 가진 소재등이 Glitter한 효과를 나타냈다. 이러한 특성을 갖는 Space Age Fashion은 1990년 이후 현대패션에서는 위의 미적특성에 사이버한 느낌을 더하여 현대적 감각으로 표현되었다. 1990년대의 현대패션에 나타난 Space Age Fashion은 간결해지고 정리된 현대적 감각을 표현하기 위해 발전된 하이테크 소재를 사용했으며, 이로써 1960년대 Space Age Fashion에 사이버한 느낌을 더하여 관능적 분위기를 연출하였다. 컬렉션에서 보여지는 미래지향적 디자인은 여러 디자이너에 의해 다양한 표현 양식으로 전개되어 일반패션에 많은 영향을 주었다. 이러한 경향으로 Space Age Fashion에 대한 흥미와 관심은 고조되었고, Space는 일반패션과 전위패션 두 분야 모두에서 하나의 패션 테마로 자리 잡았다. 이에 Space Age Fashion에 대한 연구를 기반으로 미래적 요소를 도입한 현대적 창작 디자인을 Space라는 주제로 제시하였다. Space Age Fashion의 현대적 창작 디자인 제시는 형태, 소재, 컬러에 미래지향적 요소를 도입하여, 매끄럽고 반짝이며 투명하고 금속적인 효과를 지닌 Space Age Fashion의 미적특징을 갖춘 현대적 창작 디자인 3점을 아방가르드하게 전개하였다. <디자인 1>은 Space Age Fashion의 shiny slick, transparency한 미적특성을 조화시켜 우주의 이미지를 현대적으로 표현하였다. <디자인 2>는 Space Age Fashion의 glitter, metallic effect와 transparency한 미적특성을 이용하여 공간의 연속성을 실험적으로 제시하였다. <디자인 3>은 금속성 소재로 Space Age Fashion의 metallic effect, transparency한 미적특성을 나타내었다.
