Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of learning conditions and task types on EFL learning of simple and complex grammatical rules. This study was driven by the following necessities: (1) A lack of studies on the relationship between learning conditions and rule complexity in the context of natural language and classroom; (2) controversy on the effects of a comprehension and production task to promote detection of formal linguistic features in the input processing. This study focused on two main issues. First, it examined the effects of an implicit and an explicit learning condition on the learning of grammatical rules, based on the following controversial claims. Some researchers claim that implicit learning is more advantageous in learning complex rules (Krashen, 1982; Reber, 1989), others claim that more explicit learning is more effective in learning grammatical rules regardless of rule complexity (DeKeyser, 1997; Robinson, 1996a, 1996b; Rosa, 1999; Rosa & O'Neil, 1999). Second, it investigated the effects of the two tasks on the learning of the rules to compare the effect of a comprehension task asserted in 'input-based instruction' with that of a production task supported from the Output Hypothesis (Swain, 1985, 1995). As for the overall experimental design, simple and complex rules which would be presented to learners were sorted by learners' rule familiarity test and EFL experts' survey of rule complexity suggested by Robinson (1996b). One hundred and thirty Korean college EFL learners with low proficiency were exposed to the simple rule and the complex rule under four different experimental treatments combining either of the learning conditions and any of the two tasks. The experiment was done over two weeks and the effects were measured with a pre-test and two post-tests, each consisting of a grammaticality judgment test (GJT) and a controlled written test (CWT). The major findings of the study are as follows: (1) Regardless of rule complexity, there was no significant difference between the two learning conditions in the comprehension of the rules; (2) an explicit learning condition was more effective than an implicit learning condition on the production of both the rules; (3) an explicit learning condition had delayed effects; (4) as for the effects of task types, there was no significant difference between the two task types in comprehension of a simple rule; (5) a production task was found to be more effective in the production regardless of rule complexity and in the production of a simple rule; and (6) a production task had a delayed effect on the production of a complex rule only. From the findings of the present study, the effects of an explicit learning condition and a production task were more positive than those of an implicit learning condition and a production task on the learning of grammatical rules, respectively. Based on the findings of this study, the present study is expected to give empirical evidence and suggestions for more effective ways of promoting noticing of formal linguistic features in input processing and leading L2 learners to develop their interlanguage.
