Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate true changes in academic motivation over a year long period of studying English and their impact on the educational achievement of middle school students. A total of 358 students studying EFL at a middle school participated in this study. The Motivation Subtype Questionnaire was conducted five times over a year long period to assess changes in terms of amount in student motivation. In addition, English learning biography and course evaluation summary were administered to observe students' more personalized motivation. The "D" district education office diagnosis exam questions and the participants' first semester mid-term, final exam and second semester mid-term exam scores of English were collected to assess the participants' language achievement. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed on the data collected. The main results are as follows. Firstly, to investigate the amount of changes in each motivation subtypes, the relative difference across and between motivation subtypes were both investigated as well as the relative difference between students' academic levels. From the results of the surveys, it was reported that the self-determination theory is useful because each form of motivation can be placed on its continuum of self-determination. Among the different motivation subtypes, identified regulation, which is the most internalized form of extrinsic motivation, rated the highest followed by the introjected regulation, intrinsic motivation and external regulation. In the present investigation, the motivational pattern did not vary much during 5 different occasions neither within the subtypes nor the levels. Secondly, the intrinsic motivation and the identified regulation, more self-determined forms of motivation, correlated higher with the students' classroom achievement than less self-determined motivation subtypes. The external regulation had no significant relationship with achievement. This study has contributed that the self-determination framework is a valid tool for assessing learner motivation and potential academic motivation. The present study has proven that external factors no longer play a big part as it did in the past and that students are self-determined to study English. For future investigations, a close inspection on beginners' motivation and their developmental path would be stimulating and may suggest more dynamic changes as they become fluent learners of English. Moreover, further research may focus on the effects of various strategies applied in the investigations. They are expected to be utilized as a more concrete framework for developing more comprehensive motivating methods.
