Abstract
The acquisition of a foreign language begins with vocabulary learning, and vocabulary mastering is most vital for that. As a matter of fact, however, learners are likely to be demotivated when they need to be acquainted with a huge amount of vocabulary, and that may result in detracting from their leaning efficiency. Moreover, they may be unwilling to keep on learning the foreign language if they are under pressure due to that. Specifically, learners who are not good at language acquisition might fail to learn the language if vocabulary put a strain on them. Therefore how to provide vocabulary guidance should discreetly be determined in order to ensure successful learning from the initial stage. Oral repetition and keyword method are both effective ways for vocabulary learning, and studies have focused on the short-term and late effects of the methods and their impacts on the understanding and use of vocabulary. But there isn't yet any consensus in that regard. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the two vocabulary learning activities on middle school ninth graders in our country in an effort to compare their effects from diverse angles. And it's also meant to analyze the effects of the methods by the length of vocabulary in a bid to suggest how to boost the success of vocabulary learning. The subjects in this study were middle schoolers in their ninth grade. Vocabulary guidance was provided about 36 selected vocabularies in six sessions during a three-week period of time. They took tests immediately after each session and a week after the experiment was concluded in order to assess the short-term and late effects of the methods. Two different kinds of evaluation were conducted. One was a comprehension test, which asked the students to translate the target language into Korean, and the other was a written expression test, which asked them to translate Korean into the target language. The tests were utilized to compare the short-term and late effects of the two methods, their effects on vocabulary retention, effects on learning in each session, short-term and late effects by the number of vocabulary syllable, effects on learning retention by the number of vocabulary syllable and the relationship of the effects of the two to their interaction with syllables. The main results are as follows: First, the keyword method was more effective than the oral repetition at improving the comprehension of the learned vocabularies and expression skills both in the immediate and retention tests. In terms of comprehension, the keyword activities produced very good effects in both tests, but there was no significant gap between the two methods in their effects on expression skills in either of the tests. The findings denote that the keyword method would be more effective than the oral repetition in case of aiming at acquiring the meaning of vocabulary. Second, in regard to the relationship of interaction between the learning activities and syllables to short-term vocabulary comprehension, there was no disparity between the effects of the two when the words were composed of one or three syllable(s), but the keyword activities were very effective in the event of the words with two syllables. As for the reason, the keyword method had a very good effect on acquiring the spelling of the two-syllable words, but that was no longer effective when the words consisted of three syllables, which resulted in removing the gap between that and the oral repetition. It indicated that the oral repetition had a better effect than the keyword method on acquiring the spelling of the three-syllable words that were longer than the one- or two- syllable words. As to each method's effect by the number of syllable, the keyword method was more effective than the oral repetition irrespective of the number of syllables. As for the reason, the keyword activities enabled the learners to remember the meaning of vocabulary on a short-term basis irrespective of the length of it, whereas the oral repetition activities were less effective at learning the longer words with more syllables. Therefore there would be no difference between the effects of the two in case of learning the meaning of short words, but the key- word method could have a better short-term effect than the oral repetition on learning the meaning of longer words with two or three syllables. Third, concerning the relationship of interaction between the learning activities and syllables to their retention effects on vocabulary comprehension, the learning activities and syllables produced significant interaction effects in that regard. The keyword method had a better effect on learning the words with one and two syllable(s), but no gap was found between the two in the event of the three-syllable words. The keyword activities were more effective at acquiring the meaning of one- and two-syllable words, but there was no disparity between the retention effects of the two in the event of the longer words with three syllables. It shows that the two activities would produce the same results when they are used to acquire the meaning of three-syllable words. In terms of expression skills, there was a significant interaction effect between the learning activities and syllables. No gap was found between their effects in the event of the one-syllable words, and the keyword method was more effective when the words consisted of two syllables. The oral repetition had a better effect when the words were composed of three syllables. Accordingly, it could be said that the two activities would produce the same results in terms of the spelling acquisition of one-syllable words, and that the keyword method would be more effective at learning the spelling of two-syllable words. The oral repetition would produce better retention effects when the spelling of longer words with three syllables is acquired. As for each method's effect by the number of syllable, both of the two had a different effect according to the number of syllables. As a result of conducting a posttest, the oral repetition had a significantly different effect on comprehension of the one- and two-syllable words, but that had the same effect on comprehension of the two- and three-syllable words. The keyword activities had a significantly different effect on comprehension of the one- and two- syllable words and of the two- and three-syllable words. Thus, the oral repetition activities showed no marked decline in retention effects when the words got longer from two to three syllables, whereas there was a sharp drop in the retention effects of the keyword activities in the same situation. It indicates that the oral repetition would be more effective on a long-term basis than the keyword method in the event of learning the meaning of longer words with three syllables. Fourth, as to the relationship of interaction between the learning activities and syllables to vocabulary learning retention, a posttest was implemented as there were significant gaps in the main effects of syllables. As a result, the oral repetition activities had a better effect on the learning retention of the one-syllable words than the keyword activities, and there was no difference between the two in the learning retention of two-syllable words. The keyword method had a better effect on the learning retention of the three-syllable words. The findings show that in case of aiming at acquiring the meaning of vocabulary, the keyword method would be more effective at learning the meaning of one-syllable words, and that the oral repetition would be more effective on a long-term basis at learning the meaning of relatively longer three-syllable words. In particular, the degree of learning retention by the keyword method was zero in comprehension of the one-syllable words, which signified that the learners remembered all the meanings of the words they learned by the keyword method even a week later. It indicates that the keyword activities would be especially effective at acquiring the meaning of one-syllable words. No vocabulary learning method could be applied to every classroom situation regardless of the objective of learning, expected retention term or the length of words. So future studies should continue to focus on developing and applying different vocabulary learning methods that could respectively be fit for specific objectives and the length of words and produce long-term effects. In addition, one of the reasons why there was a large disparity in the effects of the keyword method according to the number of syllable seems to have something to do with whether the selected key words include vocabularies to be learned. Therefore prolonged research efforts should be channeled into this matter as well.
