In chapter I, principle of fluorescence was explained briefly. In chapter II, tripod fluorescent systems, which bear a triazine core for combining three different functional groups, such as fluorophore, ligand and auxiliary group have been synthesized. This novel concept was confirmed through four types of BODIPY-triazine derivatives synthesized under a similar procedure, which revealed different binding behaviors towards metal ions and photophysical properties as a change in the binding and auxiliary subunits. The flexibility and potential variety of this tripod system can present various applications in the fields of fluorescent chemosensors, organo EL materials, nanomaterials and tagging materials of biological systems. In chapter III, Anthracene and binaphthyl derivatives bearing two imidazolium moieties were synthesized as fluorescent chemosensors for anions and investigated using fluorescence, 1H-NMR analysis, density functional calculations and X-Ray diffractometer analysis. The anthracene and binaphthalene based receptors display particularly selective binding for pyrophosphate and phosphate. Therefore, the selectivity of these imidazolium receptors against anions can be controlled by the topology of the binding site. The conceptual design approach adopted here could be applied to other imidazolium-based receptors with diverse topological features. Also, a new imidazolium acridine receptor synthesized as a fluorescent chemosensor for pyrophosphate and H2PO4-. The title compound displays a large CHEQ effect with effective selectivity for pyrophosphate over other anions in acetonitrile. On the other hand, a unique CHEF effect was observed when H2PO4- was added. In chapter IV, three new anion receptors bearing two distinct receptor groups using a boronic acid and imidazolium moiety were synthesized as fluorescent chemosensors for fluoride ion. The ortho-boronic acid located compound displayed selective and fluorescent change with low equiv. of fluoride ions. These observations can be attributed to the cooperative binding of ?VBF3- and the imidazolium. Also, meta-, para-boronic acid located compounds verified that the addition of fluoride to a boron center occurs prior to the (C?{H)+---F- type ionic hydrogen bond in imidazoliums. In chapter V, two new rhodamine derivatives bearing boronic acid group have been synthesized for the detection of metal ions. Compound 2 displayed a highly selective fluorescent enhancement and colorimetric change upon the addition of Hg2+, in which the spirolactam (nonfluorescent) to ring opened amide (fluorescent) process was utilized. The association constant of 2 with Hg2+ was calculated as 2.7 ?e 104 M-1.
