In Chapter 1 and 2, the chemical bonding character of iodine-intercalated single-walled carbon nanotube (I-SWNT) has been systematically investigated with combinative X-ray spectroscopies. According to iodine LI-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analysis, a white line peak corresponding to 2s ∪ 5p transition shows nearly identical but slightly stronger intensity for the I-SWNT than for neutral iodine, indicative of a weak electron transfer from intercalated iodine to SWNT. In contrast, there are remarkable spectral differences in the I LI-edge XANES spectra of I-SWNT and iodine-intercalated Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy. This allows us to rule out the possibility of negatively charged polyiodide ions in the present I-SWNT sample prepared by vapor-phase reaction. Also, we have found that a contact between iodine and SWNT during the synthesis has negligible influence on the chemical bonding nature of intercalated iodine species. The electron transfer from iodine to SWNT is further supported by C 1s X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealing the reduction of carbon in SWNT upon iodine intercalation. The Raman spectra obtained using the 647.1-nm line of a Kr-ion laser indicate that I2 intercalation affects the electronic state of SWNTs, particularly the metallic ones. The effect of I2 intercalation is thermally reversible. In Chapter 3, we report a novel synthesis of water-soluble graphene multilayered hollow spheres (GMHs), using the size-controllable Fe3O4/SiO2 core-shell composites as a template and a glucose hydrothermal route at very mild temperature of 180 ▲C. The obtained hollow nanospheres possess about 10 ~ 20 sheets of graphene multilayers with an interlayer distance of 0.34 nm, and the apparent size of nominal inner and outer diameter strongly depends on either the size of mother template or the initial molar dosage of glucose. In Chapter 4 and 5, palladium nanoparticles were captured onto spherical silica particles by ionic liquid, imidazolium chloride and urea moieties to form raspberry-like Pd@SiO2 composites, which can be recovered and reused without any loss of catalytic activity in Suzuki?CMiyaura coupling. And substrate-selective hydrogenation over Pd-magnetite/silica-ionic liquid hybridized nanocatalysts is explored in ionic-liquid-philic solvation medium. The hybrid nano catalyst together with ionic liquid medium leads to a stable catalyst dispersion enhanced by localized ┪-┪ stacking self-assembly with radial topology of micellular molecular-gates revealing a size-dependant pathway for substrate diffusion. In Chapter 6, we have shown the single crystals of organic donors and anionic rhenum clusters by electrocrystallization. Since the initial discovery of their solution phase chemistryof rhenium clusters, these [Re6Q8X6]-n (where Q = S, Se, and Te, X = Cl, CN, and n = 3, 4) cluster anions have been engaged in the electrocrystallization of highly ordered molecular assemblies with tetrathiafulvalnen (TTF)-based cation radical molecules. A large variety of binary or ternary salts have been obtained and shown to adopt remarkable molecular architectures. The structures consist of layers of TTF and [Re6Q8X6]-n complexes alternating along the principle axis. The organic layers are formed by four crystallographically independent stacks of organic donor.;Chapter
