Hawthorne의 The scarlet letter 연구

Abstract

Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote novels which underline human morals and ethics sloughing off the romance in the traditional sense of love and adventure, which are much allegorical and instructive as well. That is why his romance is referred to as "the romance of ethics". "The Scarlet Letter, A. Romance" known as the masterpiece of Hawthorne, also belongs in this category and deals with a story coming about a puritan society of the old New England. The critics of those days generally agreed in counting "The Scarlet Letter" as the best of its kind had good reasons to put it so high in the respects such as the construction of the work(dramatic system and its literary style) and the circumspective plots of the writer in the aspects of the import of the story. "The Scarlet Letter", viewed from the point of dramatic system, can be regarded as a drama in five acts and eight scenes in which the whole twenty-four scenes are divided into the beginning, the middle and the ending by scaffold. Inquiring into the sinner side of human psychology, Hawthorn saw through at the great influence of morals upon human life, which he depicted in the form of fable, and by doing so he offers many symbolical meanings. In "The Scarlet Letter", we can see that Hawthorne used the symbolical structure in which two opposite concepts such as head and heart, town and forest, day and night and light and blackness always conflict to express the moral discernment. Heart, forest, night and blackness stand for the environment of degradation shunned by the puritans and the scene for the recognition of tragedy. On the other hand, head, town, day and light refer to the Puritan society and the environment of salvation where the illusion of the omnipotence in Christianity rules. We should also take notice the symbolic method which Hawthorne commanded through the intentional and organic use of various symbols and the function of the symbols which contributed much to the depiction of the theme of work, personality and correlation of characters, and to the overall construction of work. commited sins will bring degradation. It is, however, through this degradation that man matures. In other words sin could bring maturity and salvation of man, and human relations. Man is, in his nature, a social being, and so his mind can be exhibited completely only in human society. Only after man confesses to his sin, begs a pardon and conducts virtue in its proof, he can settle down in human society and his salvation or absolution in real sense can be realized. We can find hawthorne's philosophy in his work that man can be pardoned by conducting virtue and so establishing again warm-hearted relations with his neighbors. Hester could get peace and rest through charity and devotional virtue, and, at length, the letter "A" of Adultery attached on her bosom was changed to mean "angel". Hawthorne made more efforts to depict the inevitable situation in which mentality and results the sinner should bear than the sin itself, and consequently he tells us that this enables the sinner not by return to the society. Dimmesdale atones for his sin not by committing virtue but by prayers, penance and sincere confession. Therefore, human heart is the cause of degradation and, at the same time, the source of salvation as well. "The Scarlet Letter" deals with the relationship between God and man, society and man, and men themselves, and processes instructions for the constructions of new ideal society. The major morals which Hawthorne accentuates are the importance of human understanding and the necessity of virtue and vice co-existing in human heart. The profound morals and instructive truths realized in the in the work of "The Scarlet Letter", although its background is the seventeenth century when Hawthorne lived but also upon our age as well, and the moral standards and the ideal images of society Hawthorne presented will be made much for keeps far from being disregarded. "The Scarlet Letter" is, to be sure, a work with values deserving the highest appreciation.;Hawthorne은 낭만과 사란, 모험이 있는 전통적 의미의 romance에서 벗어나 인간의 도덕, 윤리성을 강조하여 우화적이고 교훈적인 글을 썼으므로 그의 romance는 “the romance of ethics"라고 말해진다. 그의 대표작 The Scarlet Letter 역시 이 부류에 속하는 것으로서 옛 New England, 청교도 사회에서 일어나는 이야기다. 당시의 비평가들에 의하면 The Scarlet Letters를 Hawthorne의 걸작이라고 공통적으로 평하고 있다. 이 작품을 높이 평할 수 있는 근거는 작품의 구성(극적인 체계, allegory와 Symbolism)과 내용면에 있어 Hawthorne의 빈틈없는 구상에 있다고 하겠다. 이 작품은 극적인 체제면에서 고찰해 보면 전장(24장)이 Scaffold를 중심으로 beginning과 middle과 ending으로 이루어진 5막 8장의 드라마라고 볼 수 있다. Hawthorne은 인간심리의 내면을 탐구하여 인간생활에 있어서의 도덕이 차지하는 커다란 힘에 깊이 통찰하였고 이를 우화의 형식으로 묘사하여 상징적인 의의를 던져주고 있다. 이 작품에서 이러한 도덕적인 선택을 표현하기 위하여 Hawthorne은 항상 head와 heart, town과 forest, day와 night, light와 blackness등의 서로 대립되는 상징적 구조를 사용하였음을 발견할 수 있다. heart, forest, night, blackness등은 청교도들이 불신하는 타락의 환경이 되며 비극의 인지의 장면이 된다. 또한 head, town, day, light등은 청교도사회를 나타내고 기독교적인 전인의 환상이 지배하는 곳으로 구원의 환경이 되고 있다. Hawthorne은 이 밖의 여러 가지 상징을 통하여 의도적이고 그리고 유기적으로 사용된 상징에 주목하지 않을 수 없고 그것이 주제나 인물들의 성격, 인물들의 상호관계, 또는 전체구조에 공헌하는 기능을 발휘하고 있음을 본다. 죄를 범하는 것은 타락을 가져온다. 그러나 인간은 이러한 타락을 통해서 성숙할 수 있고 죄는 인간의 성숙과 구원을 가져올 수 있으며, 인간유대를 가져올 수도 있다. 인간은 천성적으로 사회적인 존재임으로 그의 정신력은 인간사회 안에서 완전히 발휘될 수 있는 가능성을 갖는다. 그러므로 인간은 죄를 고백하여 용서를 빌고 그 증거로 덕을 실현할 때에 인간생활에 다시 뿌리를 내리고 살 수 있데 되며, 진정한 죄의 구원이나, 사면이 가능해진다. 작품 속에서 우리는 다시 인간과의 애정관계를 수립하여 속죄 받을 수 있다는 작가의 뜻을 볼 수 있다. Hester는 자선과 헌신적인 덕행으로 평화와 안식을 얻고, 그녀의 가슴에 붙였던 Adultery의 글자 “A”는 Angel의 뜻으로 변하게 되었다. 여기에서 Hawthorne은 죄 자체보다 범죄 이후의 죄인의 심리상태와 그 결과에 대해서 치러야 할 불가피한 상황을 묘사했으며 이로 인해 죄인의 사회복귀가 가능해지는 것을 말해주고 있다. Dimmesdale은 덕행으로서가 아니고 기도와 고행, 진정한 참회와 고백으로서 속죄의 길을 택하고 있다. 따라서 human heart는 타락의 원인인 동시에 구원의 원천이 되는 곳이기도 하다. 따라서 The Scarlet Letter는 신과 인간, 사회와 인간, 인간과 인간관계를 그리면서 새로운 인간관계를 그리면서 새로운 이상적 사회를 이룩하는데 필요한 교훈들을 제시해 주고 있다. 그의 주된 도덕은 인간이해의 중요성과 모든 인간의 마음속에 선악이 존재함을 인식함으로써 얻어질 수 있는 인간과 인간간의 Sympathy의 필요성을 강조한 것이라 하겠다. 작품 속에 구현된 깊은 도덕심과 교훈적인 진실은 그 배경이 17세기 이기는 하나, Hawthorne이 살던 19세기나, 오늘날에 있어서도 그가 보여준 윤리적 기준이나 이상적 사회영상은 결코 무시할 수 없을 것이며, 그의 심원한 도덕감과 겸허한 진리는 영원히 지속되고 높이 평가되어야 할 것이다.
