Abstract
This thesis aims to investigate further some aspects of the relationship between art and science and technology in comparison with the views which have been developed. From the historical point of view, sit and science have been recognized as being closely related, not far away from each other, and great hopes have been expressed about the reuniting of art with science and technology. In this thesis these aspects are discussed and scientific and technological natures in art are analyzed by observing expressions of modern art, especially postwar art. Renaissance art is also included in the analysis so that its historical nature may be clarified. Renaissance artists were also scientists. They approached art with the attitudes and ideas of the scientist. In other words, they discovered the inner order of nature and attempted to express it. At this point art overlapped with science. In particular, Leonard da Vinci was representative of such Renaissance artists and he was an artist and inventor. This historical fact has not been emphasized in the history of art but it has continued without a let-up. The two representative physicists, Galilleo and Newton, eliminated the dominating transcendental viewpoint of nature. That is, they reformed the observational attitude within the biblical interpretation into an analytic study of nature on the basis of meticulous observation and measure. In 1666 the glorious and mysterious light presented in the Bible was decomposed by Newton into seven colors. The partition of color tone and the pointilism used by the impressionistic artists of france and England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries reflected this scientific aspect. In the nineteenth century this new trend was completely substituted for the traditional attitude toward art. What is there (nature itself) and what is seen were regarded as identical and it was thought that truth could be observed. This idea of the impressionistic artists is interconnected not only with the scientific observation of Renaissance but also with the perspective observation of the twentieth century. The discovery of X-ray by Wilhelm Ro¨ntgen in 1895 was a great feat corelating Renaissance, Newton's prism, and impressionism with the twentieth century. The X-ray made it possible to see the structures of things, and this extended the visible world to the invisible abstract world. Kandindky and Mondrian who simplified, integrated and made abstract natural phenomena were representative of the twentieth century artists whose works reflected the above-mentioned facts. Piccaso showed a cubic effect with nonnatural figures or abstraction, far out of the integration of natural figures. Thus, besides the various artistic expressions using science and technology of the postwar era, the evidences that art and scientific discoveries have been closely interrelated can be found in the history of art. Accordingly, can be presupposed that future art as well as present art will be developed in the newer direction than did art in the past, keeping pace with progress in science and technology. From the point of view of the discovery of form, the history of art after Renaissance has been changed from the visible concrete world into the invisible abstract world. The postwar abstract art has again developed into the electronic world. All figures can be transformed into +, - symbols and registered and recomposed in the computer. This second figure (the recomposed figure) is not a natural figure but an abstract one. Computer Art and Holography Art show this electronized abstract world. This world is that of conception, abstraction, and imagination far beyond the natural visible world. The scientific and technological approach of postwar art deals with the four dimensional world. Emphasis which modern art puts on motion and time is man's emotional expression of the unprecedented speedy changes of this age. What this speed means has its significance in meaning when it is seen as a prediction of the coming accelerated dynamic world. In conclusion, the reuniting of art with science and technology is inevitable in the light of the cultural and academic trend. It is well known that the future will be the third scientific and technological civilization based on electronics. In consideration of the fact that art has reflected and will reflect the time when it exists, it cannot be denied that modern art inevitably will take on scientific and technological nature much more strongly than art has done. It is evident now that scientific notions will be united with molding sense and will produce a novel and profitable way of expressing man's artistic feelings.
