Dilsey as the Symbol of Christian Love in William Faulkner's The Sound and The Fury

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 윌리엄 포크너의 『음향과 분노』에서 딜시라는 인물에 의해 기독교적 덕목이 어떻게 구현되는가를 연구하고, 딜시가 상징하는 사랑의 의미를 구체적으로 밝히는 데 있다. 『음향과 분노』에서는 포크너가 기독교를 일종의 도구로 사용하였으므로, 먼저 소설의 내용과 관련된 몇몇 기독교적 개념과 성서적 암시를 인간의 타락과 구원을 중심으로 연구하여, 딜시의 기독교가 소설에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가를 살펴보았다. 결과적으로, 그녀의 기독교적 미덕은 소설의 부정적인 주제를 긍정적인 것으로 전환시킴으로써, 캄슨일가의 퇴락으로 상징되는 암울함과 혼돈 속에서도 인간은 견디어 낼 뿐만아니라 승리하리라는 희망의 한 줄기 섬광을 발하게 한다. 더우기, 딜시의 기독교적 시간관은 캄슨가의 자식들의 삶을 어렵게하고 끝내 파멸로 치닫게 하는 왜곡된 시간관과 대립된다. 딜시의 시간관은 기독교에 기초하여 의미와 질서를 갖는데 반해서, 종교를 상실한 캄슨형제들의 시간관은 혼돈되었거나, 왜곡되었거나, 가치를 상실한 것이다. 기독교적인 미덕을 체현하고 있는 딜시는 와해되고 타락한 캄슨 일가를 지탱하며, 고된 노동과 육체적 고통 및 그 밖의 어려움에도 불구하고 40년간 캄슨일가의 충실한 하인의 자리를 지켰다. 딜시의 강인한 의지와 생에 대한 확고한 의미는 그녀의 구원에 대한 확신에 기반을 두고 있기에, 캄슨 일가의 몰락에도 불구하고 고통을 참고 인내할 수 있었다. 딜시는 모든 사회적, 종교적 장벽을 초월하여 모든 고통받는 인간에게서 지정한 형제임을 발견하고, 모든 인류를 사랑하는 기독교적인 사랑인 아가페를 상징한다. 포크너는 인간이 삶다운 삶을 영위하기 위해서는 사랑이 필요함을 기독교적인 덕목에 근거하여 제시하였다. 포크너의 문학세계에서는 사랑이 인류 구원의 수단인 것이다. 『음향과 분노』의 딜시는 포크너의 대변가의 하나로, 명예와 연민과 긍지와 동정과 희생과 인내의 오랜 진리에 바탕을 둔 기독교적 사랑이 그녀를 통해 구현되었다. 이 모든 덕목들이 상호 화합되어 『음향과 분노』에 나타나는 궁극적인 사랑의 전언이 완성된다.;This thesis examines how Christian virtues are embodied by the character of Dilsey in William Faulkner's The Sound and The Fury and attempts to specify the meaning of love that Dilsey stands for. As Faulkner uses Christianity as a tool, some Christian ideas and Biblical allusions from the text are investigated, particularly in regard to the fall and redemption, to show how Dilsey's Christianity affects the novel: her Christian virtues can be seen to cause the theme to change from negativity to positivity; in the midst of darkness and turmoil of the decline of the Compson family gleams a light of hope that man can endure and prevail. In addition, Dilsey's Christian view of time is opposed to the Compson sons' concept of time which makes it difficult to live in the world, forcing thom to escape to final ruin. Thus, the concept of time is discussed: time according to Dilsey is understood in terms of Christianity, and obtains meaning and order in contrast to the time of the Compson brothers - confused, twisted or valueless - who have lost religion. Dilsey, personifying Christian virtues, is the sustaining force of a broken and corrupted family. She has remained a faithful servant to the Compson family for forty years in the face of hard toil and physical suffering, with more to come. In spite of the fall of the Compson family, Dilsey can suffer and endure as her firm belief in redemption gives her strong will and the meaning of life. Dilsey represents the Christian love - agape - which crosses all social and religious barriers: she is able to see a brother in every suffering human being and thus love all her fellow men. On the grounds of Christian virtues, Faulkner suggests that man needs love to make life worth living. Love in the world of William Faulkner is a means of salvation of mankind. Dilsey in The Sound and The Fury is one of Faulkner's spokesmen, and in her is embodied Christian love based on the old verities - honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice and endurance. All those virtues are united in harmony with each other so that the ultimate message of love that can be found in The Sound and The Fury is completed.
