John Donne의 종교시와 죄의 문제

Abstract

Jone Donne의 시는 그의 선배들 및 대부분의 동시대인들이 쓰던 시와는 선명한 단절을 이루고 있다. 대다수 Elizabeth 시대의 시는 그 특징이 장식적이고 화려하다. 그 이미지들은 아름답게 치장되고 그 운율은 감미롭다. 반면에 Donne의 시는 대개 극적인 대조, 긴장, 혹은 지적인 난해성등의 요소를 담고 있는 농축된 이미지인 conceit로 씌어지며 전통적인 수사들은 완전히 사라져 버렸다. Donne의 conceit는 개인적인 것에서 우주적인 것으로, 그리고 다시 우주적인 것에서 개인적인 것으로 끊임없는 궤도를 그리면서 계속 비약을 한다. 죄의 문제와 그 뒤에 놓여 있는 악의 문제는 끊임없이 Donne을 괴롭혔는데 그가 이 두 문제를 다룸에 있어 가장 많은 영향을 끼친 사람이 바로 Augustine이다. Augustine의 악의 이론은 신은 완전히 선한 존재이며 악의 원천이 될 수 없다는 원칙에 입각하고 있다. 신은 존재하는 모든 것의 창조자이다. 악은 존재할 수가 없다. 그러나 분명 악은 세상에 강한 영향력을 지니고 있다. Donne은 이 악의 문제에 대해 많은 고민을 하였다. 종교적인 문제의 경우 Donne은 Holy Sonnets에서 드러나고 있듯이 종교적 신앙을 통해 자신의 내적인 문제를 해결하려고 애썼다. 그의 경우 종교적 완성은 인생의 완성으로 간주될 수 있으며 그것은 결국 궁극적인 구원에 이르는 과정이기도 하다. 모든 인간의 문제를 해결할 수 있는 유일한 인물이 Christ임을 고려하면 Donne이 추구하는 종교적 완성은 자신의 내부에 존재하는 Christ에 대해 확신을 가질 때에야 가능하다. Donne이 초기의 설교에서 내적인 갈등을 계속하고 있었던 반면에 인생의 종말에 즈음하여서는 그 문제를 해결하기 보다는 받아들이려고 노력하였다. 만일 종교적 고뇌와 갈등이 Donne의 마음 속에서 사라져 버린다면 그의 시와 여러 가지 산문, 설교 작품들은 끝까지 지녔던 긴장감을 잃어 버리고 당면한 절망감만을 이야기하며 결코 그같은 절망감을 극복하지 못하게 될 것이다.;The poetry of Donne represents a sharp break with that written by his predecessors and most of his contemporaries. Much Elizabethan verse is decorative and flowery in its quality. Its images adorn, its meter is mellifluous. Donne's Poetry, on the other hand, is written largely in conceits - concentrated images which involve an element of dramatic contrast, of strain, or of intellectual difficulty. Most of the traditional flowers of rhetoric disappear completely. Donne's conceits in particular leap continually in a restless orbit from the personal to the cosmic and back again. Nothing troubled Donne so persistently as the problem of sin and the problem of evil which lies behind it. It is Augustine that had an influence on Donne in handling these two issues. Augustine's theory of evil rests upon the principle that God is wholly good, and cannot be held to be the source of evil. God is the Creator of everything that exists within. It follows that evil can have no existence. And yet, evil has a powerful effect upon the world. When it came to the religious world, he endeavored to solve his inner problems through religious faith as shown in Holy Sonnets. For John Donne, the religious accomplishment can be considered as the perfection of life and it was namely the process of achieving ultimate and immediate salvation. Considering that Christ was the only figure to have shown in his lifetime the possibility that all of the human problems could be solved, the religious accomplishment sought by Donne was possible to achieve only when he came to be confident that Christ existed with him. This study shows that if in the early sermons the inner battle is still being fought, towards the end of his life, Donne may be said to have contained the problem of sin rather than resolved it. If the religious conflict had altogether gone out of Donne's heart, his poems and sermons would lack the tension they retain to the end, and which speak so powerfully of despair confronted, and never overcome.
