Abstract
Egon Shiele(l890~1918) is one of representative artists in Vienna expressionism, and built his own world of painting in the exprssion of human beings with the theme of eroticism. This thesis has a purpose to examine the meaning and characteristics of his eroticism shiele, who worked in vienna, Austria, one of representative amusement centers in Europe a t that time, explored human true nature in the instinctive desire of Eros through his direct experience, and formed the subject of his works, experiencing pain and death caused by the result of fulfilling sexual desire, moral criticism, and social punishment There had been the artistic tradition of taking sex as a subject before him, and it has been continuing so far. Besides Greek and Indian arts which prayed for wealth and ferfility and dreamed of the idealization of sexual instinct, and Japanese art which is very direct and shows its exaggerated attachment to sex, the theme of 'the secret and pleasure of sex' progressed continuously, despite its difference in style and time, can be easily found in the tradition of western art. Exploration on the other sides of Erospain, anxiety, death, and solitude-coming from Edvard Munch and German expressionism in the late nineteenth century, gave birth to the various sexual approach of today's modern asrt, and Shiele is one of the representative artists who turned his eyes to the other sides of Eros, expressing death and pain related to sex the contradiction of spirit and the body, and challenging thoughts toward traditional social custom The characteristics of Shiele's eroticism studied in this thesis can be summarized a s follows. The bold depiction of sexual intercourse based on his direct experience of the female body, and the expression and exploration of the female body make us feel hiss free will toward human sex repressed by custom and social class having vested rights. Also, they are the basic desire of giving birth to Eros through an unfortunate family history caused by father's venerial disease, and the human basic instinct leading them to death a t the same time. this idea indicates the belief that death, life and love cycle as one. The formalistic characteristics of expressing human beings in Shiele's works make us' feel his own individuality. Lean, small, and ugly features derived from 'the aesthetics of ugliness'and the distortion of the body are the aspects of human beings, who want to be freed from the tradition and custom of expressionism with the emphasis on human spirituality, and the features of the whole man As a result, eroticism in Shiele's paintings has the characteristics of his personal experience with European periodic, social backgrounds in the late 19th century and the early 20th century, and it should be understood in the view of free will accepting eroticism. Shiele is important in that he established, his unique painting area as a painter who made a thorough investigation of the instinctive aspect of sex in understanding and studying the human character in this secular world.
