Abstract

Korea, with its rapid development, has a great demand for people who can speak English fluently because it takes an act-ive part in every field of the world. Therefore, the importance of English language education has increased more and more in Korea. One of the most important factors of English language education is the curriculum of the nation, another is the text-book which is used as the meterial for English classes, and the third is the teaching technique and evaluation. The curriculum is the whole plan of education which de-scribes what to choose and how to arrange it in order to ach-ieve the objectives and aims of education. In Korea, the ministry of education publicizes the national curriculum of elementary, middle, and high schools, The curriculum must be revised because of the changes of extra-educational factors and intra-educational factors. On December 31, 1981, the fourth middle school English curriculum was published and the new textbook which was made in accordance with this curriculum has been used since 1984. in this paper, the fourth English language curriculum is reviewed. Secondly, the new English textbook is reviewed. thirdly, questionnaires were given to English teachers to dis-cover their opinions on the new textbook. The following is the result of this study: 1. The revised English language curriculum aims at the integrative cultivation of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). It especially focuses on communicative competence and listening which have been neglected in past English classes. 2. The new textbook is made in accordance with the revised curriculum with its focus on listening and speaking. 3. The presentation of unit items is well organized in accordance with the acquisition of the four language skills. 4. An analysis of the questionnaire (168 English teachers in Seoul) showed that the new textbook is good for achieving the objectives of the curriculum. In conclusion, this fourth English language curriculum focuses on the ability of listening and speaking, and the new textbook is well made and organized for this purpose.;오늘날 영어는 국제어로서 각종 국제회의는 물론 과학, 무역 등 모든 분야에서 사용되고 있다. 지금까지 눈부신 발전을 거듭하여 온 우리 나라도 새로운 과학기술의 도입, 경제와 무역, 인력의 해외 진출, 국제무대에서의 외교 등과 같은 여러 가지 활동이 활발하게 이루어지고 있으며, 영어를 능숙하게 구사할 수 있는 인력자원의 수요도 나날이 늘어나고 있다. 이러한 국가적, 사회적, 개인적 필요에 따른 영어교육의 중요성이 날로 증대되어 가고 있다. 영어교육에 있어서 가장 중요한 구성요소로는 국가적 차원에서 각급학교에서 가르쳐야할 내용과 그 목표를 제시하여 주는 교육과정과, 실제의 수업에서 학습의 교재가 되는 교과서, 그리고 효율적인 학습이 되도록 도와주는 교수방법과, 목표가 달성되었는지 알아보는 평가로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 교육과정이란 교육의 목적이나 목표를 달성하기 위하여 무엇을 선정하여 어떻게 조직·배열하여 가르칠 것인가를 종합적으로 묶은 교육의 전체계획으로서, 우리 나라에서는 문교부령이나 문교부고시로서 국가 전체의 교육과정을 제시하고 있다. 이 교육과정도 시대의 흐름에 따라 교육외적 상황과 교육내적 요인의 변화에 따른 개정이 불가피하다. 문교부는 1981년 12월 31일 문교부고시 제442호로 개정된 중학교 교육과정을 발표하였는데, 이는 1973년의 개정이래 8년여 만에 다시 개정된 제4차 교육과정이라 하겠다. 이 개정된 교육과정에 따라 새로이 만들어진 영어 교과서가 1984학년도부터 중학교에서 사용되고 있다. 교과서는 교육과정에 제시된 교육목표를 달성하기 위하여 실제 수업현장에서 사용되는 학습용 교재로서, 영어 교과서는 타 교과의 교과서보다 더욱 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 그 이유는 교과내용 중심인 타 교과와는 달리, 외국어학습에 대한 다양한 견해와 교수 방법이 공존하고 외국어교육에 있어서는 교과서가 수업방법까지 제시해주어야하기 때문이며, 목표어인 영어가 교실 밖에서는 사용이 되지 않는 인위적 환경에서 학습이 이루어지기 때문에 교과서는 학습자가 대하는 영어의 거의 전부를 차지하기 쉽기 때문이며, 부교재 사용이 금지되고, 중학교에서는 영어 교과서가 단일화되었으며, 고교입시의 출제범위가 교과서에 한정된 것 등의 이유를 들 수 있다. 따라서 교과서는 교육과정에 제시된 목표를 달성할 수 있도록 알맞은 내용의 선정 및 조직·배열이 이루어져야 한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 첫째, 4차 교육과정의 고찰을 통하여 교육과정의 목표와 개정방향이 무엇인지 알아보며, 둘째, 새 교과서의 분석을 통하여 교육과정의 목표가 교과서에 얼마만큼 반영되어 있는지 살펴본 후 셋째, 이에 대한 일선 영어교사들의 의견을 설문지조사를 통하여 알아 보았다. 그 결과, 개정된 교육과정에서는 언어의 4기능의 고른 발달, 특히 종래의 교실 수업에서 소홀히 다루어 왔던 대화능력의 배양과 듣기 능력에 대한 강조가 이루어지고 있었다. 교육과정에 제시된 대화능력과 듣기능력의 배양을 위하여 새 교과서에서는 ‘Main Text'로 시작하던 종래의 교과서와는 달리 새 단원요소인 ’Listen and Repeat'와 ‘Dialogue'를 신설하여 'Main Text' 앞에 제시하고 있다. 또한 새 교과서는 단원요소의 제시순서에 있어서도 ‘Listen and Repeat'-'Dialogue'-'Oral Practice'-'Main Text'의 순서로 언어의 4기능의 습득순서에 알맞으며, 반복과 연습을 통한 심화가 이루어지도록 체제가 짜여져 있다. 그리고 교육과정에 제시된 이러한 교육목표를 달성시키는데 있어서 새 교과서는 대체적으로 만족할 만한 수준이라는 것이 일선교사들의 질문지조사를 통하여 밝혀졌다.
