한국 초상화에 나타난 안면 표정연구

Abstract

肖像畵란 인물의 形과 影을 화가의 눈을 통하여 화면에 형상화하는 繪畵를 말한다. 초상화는 인물화의 한 부분으로서 東西古今을 막론하고 회화의 많은 주제가 되어왔으며 韓國 繪畵史에 있어서도 가장 자료가 풍부하고 남아있는 기록도 정확하다. 이러한 한국 초상화 작품을 고찰 함으로써 시대, 사회상 또는 직업등 전반적인 생활 여건에 의해 대상인물의 안면 표정이 어떻게 변화되었나를 개괄적으로 살펴 보았다. 작품을 살펴봄에 있어서 高麗時代 이전은 현존작이 없어서 문헌에 의한 고찰에 그치고, 高麗時代는 초상화에 대한 기록은 많으나 현존작이 몇 폭에 불과하며 대부분의 작품이 移摸本이어서 전반적인 작품 분석이 어렵지만, 朝鮮時代는 鑑戒的이고도 政治的인 목적과 敎化를 목적으로 초상화가 제작되었고, 亨祀용으로 書院이나 祠院에 봉안되어졌으며, 功臣이나 德이 있는 高官들을 '圖畵署'에 명하여 그리도록 하였기 때문에 현존기록과 작품수가 많아 한국 초상화의 특징과 작품 분석이 가능하다. 이토록 초상화가 발달한 원인은 사회 전반적으로 思孝를 중시하고 儒敎가 성행하여 王의 초상을 비롯하여 功臣의 圖像과 高德을 기리기 위한 초상 그리고 개인의 영복을 기념하고 후세에 널리 알리기 위하여 제작되었기 때문이다. 또한 초상화를 제작함에 있어서는 대상 인물의 어느 부분 보다도 특히 안면을 위주로 강조하였고 초상 인물이 지니는 意와 氣를 묘사함에 막중한 비중을 두었으며, 하체는 신분을 알려주는 정도에만 그치고 안면을 중심으로 解剖學的인 비례에서 耳·目·口·鼻의 과장과 왜곡으로 대상 인물의 외형적 특징을 통하여 내면적 세계와 성격을 나타내려 하였다. 이것은 외적 여건에 의해 좌우되는 순간적 모습의 포착과 觀相學的인 이해로서 대상 인물 자체에 대한 공경심과 인품 그리고 학식에 대한 감화로서 위엄과 권위의 추상개념까지도 도출하여 형상화한 것이라 하겠다. 따라서 本 論文에서는 이러한 특징에 의해 변화되어진 초상화 주인공의 안면 표정을 연구하기 위하여 이에 필요한 이론적 기반으로 生理學的, 演技學的, 觀相學的, 解剖學的 觀點을 개괄적으로 살펴보고, 현존 한국 초상화 대상 인물의 신분상의 분류 및 이에 따라 독특하게 나타나는 안면 표정을 분석해 본 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있다. 첫째, 생리학적 관점에서 살펴보면, 초상화 주인공들은 문화와 사회에서 강조하는 전형적인 정서적 표출인 사회적 지위와 문화적 상황에 의한 의식 경험에 의해 상황의존적인 정서 표출로서 대상인물이 지니는 감정이 안면 표정에 나타나 있으며 둘째, 연기학적 관점에서 보면, 대상 인물은 의식적인 자신의 표현으로 자신의 인품이나 학식, 풍모, 업적 등의 내면세계를 안면 표정이라는 외적 표출로서 한 작품, 한 장면 속에서의 '배역 창조'를 위한 연기를 하고 있다. 즉, 신분에 따른 사회적 양식을 스스로 인식하고 그에 맞는 관습적인 안면 표정을 연기하고 있다. 셋째, 관상학적인 관점에서 보면, 東洋 초상화에서 인물 묘사시 초상 인물의 특징이 관상학적으로 분리되고 그 인물과 꼭 닮게 그리는 形似와도 직결됨을 한국 초상화에서도 骨相法에 대한 인식으로서 인물에서 느껴지는 意와 氣의 묘사에 노력을 기울였음을 알 수 있다. 넷째, 해부학적인 관점에서는 초상화 주인공의 안면 형태의 특징으로 우리 조상들의 안면 모습을 추정해 보려 하였다. 이상으로 네가지 관점에서 살펴 볼때 한국 초상화 인물의 안면 표정은 외형적 묘사에 내면적 세계의 표출이라는 점에서 한 인물의 존엄성과 특출함에 대한 깊은 배려와 함께 인물 자체에 대한 고귀성에 상당한 비중을 두어 제작되었음을 알 수 있다.;Portraits are the subject's form and spirit expressed in paintings through the eyes of the artist. Portraits have been widely painted by artists of the East and the West, undoubtedly the most abundant material for painters in Korea with numerous pieces still remaining to the present. With the exception of the pre Korea period, records of portraits remain the most abundant source remaining today thgether with the actual masterpieces themselves. Through these art works, the era in which the portrait were created, the social background and information on vocational trends may be deduced from the facial expressions of the subjects themselves. In Korea art, the face is especially accentuated as the vessel of the subject's purpose and spirit, thus the capturing of the face in Korean portrait purported to relay the expression of the moment, and furthermore the abstract the subject's knowledge, dignity and power. In this study, the various facial expressions of the subject's in Korea portraits are analyzed through the biological, dramatic, phrenological and anatomical perspectives. 1. From the biological point of view, the facial expressions are an emotive output of the subject's social status and cultural situation. 2. Through the dramatic analysis, the subject is play a role in which the subject's character, intellect and stature of his inner world are output. 3. The subject's character is also categorized through the physiognomy, not only with the Golsangboub, but also the conscious effort to realized the status of the subject by expressing the purpose and spirit of the subject. 4. From the anatomical perspective, the facial expression of the subject is characterized as the face of the Korean ancestors, providing the modern Korea glimpse into its past. In conclusion, it is evident that the Korean portrait place great emphasis on the importance of the human being, as they deeply reflect the dignity and prominence of the single subject.
