인격교육을 위한 도덕교과 방법론에 대한 개선방안 연구

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore how character education, the ultimate object of moral education, should be taught. The most prominent teaching method of moral education of the 7th educational curriculum in Korea is the method of Lickona. This study will analyze the Lickona's moral education and provide the Lipman's community of inquiry as an alternative approach for the character education. Since the late 1980s in the United States, a need to counter immoral behavior of teenagers was brought up, and the traditional method of character education was revived. Proponents of character education, including Lickona, rejected moral relativism and argued that teachers should provide students with moral facts. Character education can be defined in various ways based on perspectives, but this study defines it as ‘a harmony between moral judgment education and virtue education.’ There is also a need to provide an effective academic solution to the current situation of abundant immoral teenagers in Korea. Lickona's method, which is the theoretical foundation of the 7th educational curriculum in Korea, provides the 6 steps of moral development, definition of character, moral perception, moral sentiments, and moral actions. This approach can be analyzed in two types of approaches, a classroom approach and a school-wide approach. There is a need to change the teaching methods used in character education. Lickona's method shows some limitations. It does not show much difference from the Kohlberg's method of moral judgment and the virtue educational method, nor tries to integrate totally independent theoretical methods. This study suggests that the alternative to such method is Lipman's method of community of inquiry, which transforms the selfish being into a person through the self-correction process derived from the dialogical and communal inquiry. This method enables the individual to understand other view points and develop himself into a higher moral being of the multi-dimensional aspects. The method of community of inquiry will be able to overcome the limits of the method of Lickona's character education. It will be able to both strive for moral judgment and practical ethics and provide a new paradigm in the moral education field. This study indicates such a new mode of moral teaching and its particular example of such method applied in a real moral class as a model for the future study.;본 연구의 목적은 도덕교육의 최종 목적인 인격교육을 위해서 어떻게 가르칠 것인가에 대한 논의를 하고자 하는데 있다. 현행 도덕과 교육과정에서 강조되고 있는 인격교육의 대표적인 방법으로 리코나의 통합적 방법을 제시하고 있는데, 인격교육의 방법으로서의 리코나의 통합적 방법을 비판적으로 검토해보고, 리코나의 인격교육론을 토대로 하고 있는 이러한 현행 인격교육의 개선방안으로서 리프만의 탐구공동체를 통한 인격교육의 방법을 제시해 보고자 한다. 1980년대 후반부터 미국사회의 점증하는 청소년들의 비도덕적 행위에 대한 대응책의 필요성과 함께 전통적인 형태의 인격교육(character education)이 부활하게 되었고, 리코나를 비롯한 인격교육 주창자들은 윤리적 상대주의를 거부하고 교사들이 학생들에게 전해주어야 하는 전통적인 도덕적 진리가 있다고 주장하였다. 인격교육은 정의하는 입장에 따라 다양하게 논의될 수 있는데, 본 논문에서 ‘인격교육은 도덕적 판단력 교육과 덕목교육의 조화이다’라고 정의한다. 현재 우리나라의 청소년들의 도덕성 상실 내지 인격 부재에 대해 효과적인 교육적 대처의 요구에 발맞추어, 도덕과 교육에서 이러한 의미의 인격교육의 필요성이 요청된다. 제7차 교육과정에의 이론적 근거가 되고 있는 리코나의 인격교육론은 도덕성 추론 6단계로 전개되는 도덕성 발달이론과 인격의 의미와 구성요소로서 도덕적 인지, 도덕적 감정, 도덕적 행동으로 제시할 수 있고, 교실에서의 접근방안과 학교차원의 접근방안의 두 가지 차원으로서 리코나가 제시하는 통합적 도덕교육방법을 살펴볼 수 있다. 인격교육을 위한 도덕과 수업 방법상의 전환이 필요함을 절감하고 교수-학습 방법상의 변화를 꾀하고자 하는데, 제7차 교육과정에서 인격교육론의 토대가 되고 있는 리코나의 통합적 방법의 한계는 과거의 콜버그의 도덕 판단을 위한 교수학습방법이나 덕목접근방법과 별반 차이를 보이지 않고 있고, 결국 이론적 배경이 전혀 다른 독립적 방법들을 통합하려 시도한다는 점이다. 이에 대한 개선방안으로 본 연구는 리프만의 탐구공동체 방법론을 살펴보았다. 리프만의 탐구공동체에서는 대화를 통해서 인지적인 자기교정을 함으로써 이기적 자아를 조정하여 다른 사람의 관점을 이해하고 보다 높은 단계로의 다차원적인 발전을 계속해 나아가는 과정이 이루어지기 때문이다. 이를 본 연구에서는 현장 도덕교과 수업에 적용하여 구체적인 개선안으로 제시하였다. 그러므로 리코나 이론의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 대안적 교수학습방법으로서 탐구공동체의 대화의 방법은 도덕 판단력과 덕목 실천을 동시에 추구하면서 통합적 인격교육을 추구하는데 있어 효과적인 대안이 될 수 있으며, 도덕과 교육이 새로운 패러다임을 모색해나가는데 있어 시사하는 바가 크다는 점을 본 연구는 밝히었다.
