의사소통능력 신장을 위한 소집단 학습효과의 측정 및 평가

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to consider some theoretical backgrounds of the small group approach to language teaching, and to design a cooperative small group Learning method which can be available to the large middle school classes in Korea. Traditionally, mastery of language structures has been the language teacher's main emphasis, so that form rather than meaning has dominated in English language teaching. The small group approach reacts against the view of language as a set of structures and moves towards a view of language teaching for communication. Thus the language teacher can approach teaching the Language by presenting and practicing it in relation to language use to which it may be put as a communicative tool. The methods are as follows: First, to increase the student's English learning motivation and active participation, an experimental class of 59 students is grouped into 10 small groups of 5-6 students. It Provides the students with as many chances to speak as possible. Many small group activities are prepared for increasing the student's motivation, such as games, songs, and contests. Second, for the effective small group lessons, each group has a leader who oversees the progress of his(her) peers. He(She) performs as a teaching assistant. Third, a sample integrated teaching model for dialogue is presented so that the above methods may be properly used in areal classroom situation. This model has some different processes from a traditional teaching course. Above all, communicative activities are emphasized in this cooperative, individual, and competitive small group setting. Students cooperate well in pairs or groups. Various types of testing tools were given to students to check the merits of small group learning : i. e. questionaire method the analysis, of classroom dialogue patterns for four hours per week. Syntax Acquisition Index (SAI-the degree of grammaticality) analysis and achievement test. The results are as follows: First, the small group approach motivates the learners. Second , the small group approach increases language practice opportunities. Third, the small group apporach improves the quality of student question and response. Fourth, the small group approach helps students improve their grades.;언어 교육의 궁극적인 목표는 의사 소통 능력의 함양에 있다고 할 수 있다. 의사 소통 능력이라 함은 언어의 네가지 기본 능력을 의미하겠으나, 우리나라의 교육현장에서는 여러가지 어려움으로 인하여 이 네가지 기본 능력의 함양보다는 언어의 구조 이해에 관심을 집중시켜 왔다. 다시 말해서, 의미를 중심으로 해서 언어와 언어 사용과의 관계를 이해시키고 이 사용면을 연습시키기 보다는 언어의 형태에 대한 지식 습득이 지배적이었다. 이러한 외국어 교육 현실로 말미암아 많은 학생들이 문법 지식과 읽기 능력에 비해 말하기와 듣기 능력이 크게 뒤떨어지는 결과를 초래했다. 언어의 의사 소통 능력을 소홀히 할 수 밖에 없었던 데에는 여러가지 어려움이 지적될 수 있겠으나, 그 중에서도 학급의 학생 수가 많다는 점과 의사 소통 능력 함양을 위한 실질적인 학습 모형이 많지 않다는 점이 가장 심각한 어려움으로 지적될 수 있다. 본 논문에서는, 현재의 대단위 학급제도가 당분간은 계속되리라는 현실을 감안하여, 현재와 같은 대단위 학급 내에서 이용할 수 있는 소집단 협력 학습 모형 및 방법을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 아울러, 의사소통 능력의 함양에 소집단 학습이 효과적이라는 주장을 실험 학습을 통해 경험적으로 검증하는 것도 목적의 일부이다. 본 논문은 중학교 2학년 2개반을 대상으로 실험반 1개반, 비교반 1개반으로 편성하여 10주 간의 수업을 실시해온 과정과 그 결과를 토대로 했다. 소집단 학급의 구성 방법은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생들의 영어 학습 동기와 적극적인 참여를 증가시키기 위해서 실험반 1개반 59명의 학생을 5~6명으로 구성된 10개의 소집단으로 조직한다. 또한 학생들의 동기 유발을 위해 놀이, 노래, 경쟁 학습을 준비한다. 비교반 1개반 59명에게는 전통적인 방법에 의한 수업 을 진행한다. 둘째, 효과적인 소집단 학습을 위해서, 각각의 소집단에 소집단장을 둔다. 소집단장은 교사의 보조자로서의 역할을 한다. 세째, 대화(Dialogue) 학습의 수업 모형을 제시함으로써, 소집단 학습방법을 실제 교실 상황에서 적절히 사용할 수 있도록 한다. 이수업 모형은 전통적인 교수 방식과는 다른 과정을 포함한다. 소집단 학습의 장점을 검증하기 위한 검사 도구로 영어 학습 흥미도 조사, 단위 시간(주 4시간)의 발언 횟수 비교, SAI(Syntax Acquisition Index: 문법의 정확성을 나타내는 정도) 분석 비교, 그리고 성취도 비교 및 분석( 4월, 5월 두차례)을 사용한다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 소집단 학습은 종래의 학습 방법에 비해 학생들의 동기를 유발시키는데 도움이 된다. 둘째, 소집단 학습은 종래의 학습 방법에 비해 학생들에게 언어 연습의 기회를 증가시킨다. 세째, 소집단 학습은 종래의 학습 방법에 비해 학생들의 발언의 질을 향상시킨다. 네째, 소집단 학습은 종래의 학습 방법에 비해 학생들의 성취도를 향상 시킨다. 결국, 이 실험 결과는 그 동안 이론적으로 주장해 온 소집단 학습이 대단위 학급 내에서도 예상된 효과를 얻을 수 있음을 입증했다.
