Abstract
This study examines the experiences of elementary school teachers in guiding students to write journals and strives to reveal the significance it has to teachers at school by investigating the purpose and method of guiding to journal writing. Journals In English, both 'diary' and 'journal' are used. 'Diary' is the more personal and private piece of writing, and the most commonly used. Whereas 'journal' means personal writings in a broader sense. A diary is a personal record of a person's daily life and also a type of a journal, but journals include all kinds of writings of a person. In Korea, only the meaning of 'diaries' is used. However, diaries go beyond being a record of a student's personal thoughts and secrets, and are open to teachers and their parents. Therefore, in english, the word 'journal' is more relevant. Journals are a record of the most impressive or important theme of a student's daily life. They are writings that are intimately connected to the lives of the children who write them. According to studies on guiding journal writing of elementary school students, it is highly effective as a means to reflect on the children's lives, foster writing skills, enhance thinking, judging and observing skills, and cultivate beautiful sentiments and human qualities. Therefore, many teachers use this to improve children's vocabulary, thinking, expressing and problem solving skills. Furthermore, they can continuously check on the child's internal world and collect data to utilize it directly to teach the school curriculum, and guide their sentiment development and health. Until some time ago, elementary class teachers used to customarily inspect students' journals, which was also perceived as their duty by the students themselves and their parents. However, guiding and inspecting journals triggered issues of infringement of the child's private life and human rights, leading the Ministry of Education to announce guidelines to make a teacher's guide to journal writing more optional or left it to their discretion. Nevertheless, most teachers continue to guide children in writing their journals. In order to examine its significance to elementary school teachers, I conducted in-depth interviews with current teachers and surveyed them according to the following questions. 1. How do the type be classified experience of teachers in guiding students to writing journal ? 1-1. What is the purpose of guiding students to write journals about experiences of elementary school teacher ? 1-2. What is the method of guiding students to write journals about experiences of elementary school teacher ? 1-3. What is the result of guiding students to write journals about experiences of elementary school teacher? I selected 25 class teachers at Hangbok elementary school located in Sonpagau, Seoul, to answer these questions, and conducted a qualitative case study that analyzed the survey and a series of in-depth interviews. The results of this study can be categorized by the purpose and method of guiding journal writing by teachers, their experiences of guiding journal writing and the meaning of guiding journal writing has to them. Elementary class teachers do not set a detailed purpose or method when they first begin to guide students in writing journals. As they accumulate more experience and learn its importance and effect, however, they use it to for complex purposes such as guiding children in their lives and improving their way of thinking. The experience of teachers can be classified into three kinds: 'formal guidance', 'internal guidance' and 'complex guidance'. Formal guidance is guiding the writing of journals, and internal guidance is acquiring information of the child's environment and thoughts through their journals, and using it to guide them in their daily life. Complex guidance is guiding children with both formal and internal purposes, and the type that is mostly experienced by teachers. Teachers with all three experiences replied that they felt it worthwhile to observe the developments and changes in students as a result of their guidance, and continue to motivate them to write journals. They also have to spend a lot of time and effort to inspect their students' journals. Teachers in all three types of experiences said that although they had not intended it, they were able to form a bond with the children and stabilize their relationships with them. These are essential in a teacher and student relationship. Guiding and inspecting journal writing, and the journals themselves create an internal platform where the teacher and student can meet for the teacher to educate the student. However, this study was conducted on elementary school teachers to examine the meaning of guiding journal writing at elementary schools and it may be difficult to understand the general meaning of guiding journal writing based solely on the experience of these teachers. Therefore, it requires further study through a conduct of a survey of both students and their parents, and more in-depth interviews. Also, this study is a qualificative case study that generalizes the results of the study to all elementary school teachers with experience in guiding journal writing. The term 'journal' includes the meaning of an undisclosed piece of personal writing. However, journals today are disclosed to teachers and parents for educational purposes, and this is perceived as mandatory. Therefore, the creation of a new word that can effectively represent the role of journals and their inspection in elementary schools is necessary.;본 연구는 초등학교 교사들의 실제 일기쓰기지도 경험을 살펴봄으로써, 현재 이루어지고 있는 일기쓰기지도의 목적과 방법을 탐색해 보고, 학교 현장에서 교사들에게 일기쓰기지도가 어떤 의미를 갖는지 밝히는데 그 목적이 있다.
