Online Activism for Safe Abortion in Thailand

Abstract

According to abortion advocacy organizations and women who have had experience with abortion, the information about abortion provided in Thailand is still limited. Simultaneously, misconceptions about abortion in the traditional media and deep-rooted social stigma have become obstacles for people who want to seek proper information about abortion. When several women who once experienced having an abortion looked up information about abortion procedures on the internet to check whether they were accurate, they discovered controversial aspects and misunderstandings about it. As a result, these women decided to share their abortion experiences on social media to provide correct and insightful information to the Thai abortion discourse with the best hope that their narratives are helpful for those who are seeking abortion as well. The study was conducted through online in-depth interviews with 15 women who shared their abortion experiences on social media platforms in both individual and organizational accounts. Their narratives can be considered a part of online activism. This is because, in addition to sharing their experiences, they also highlighted the importance of free abortion and legal abortion by using hashtags and several kinds of social media content. Moreover, they also helped eliminate the conservative idea that having an abortion is karma to having an abortion as a symbol of autonomy over one’s own body. Several women also pointed out other factors that could influence their decision to get an abortion, including economic, educational, and cultural issues. Ultimately, not only do these narratives show the relationship between abortion and the reproductive justice movement, but they also highlight the importance of the online world to the reproductive healthcare system in Thailand.;낙태 옹호 단체 및 낙태를 경험한 여성들로부터 모집한 정보에 따르면 태국에서 제공되는 낙태에 관한 정보가 부족하다고 합니다. 더불어 전통 매체에서의 낙태에 대한 오해와 뿌리 깊은 사회적 편견으로 인해 낙태에 대한 정확한 정보를 찾고 싶어하는 사람들에게 한계가 되었습니다. 낙태를 경험한 많은 여성들이 낙태 과정에 대한 더 많은 정보를 찾기 위해 인터넷을 이용해 봤으나 아직까지는 다양한 측면에서의 정보가 부족하며 오해가 있는 것으로 나타났습니다. 이후 태국 낙태 담론에 정확하고 다양한 정보를 제공하고자 많은 여성들이 자신의 낙태 경험을 SNS 에 공유하며, 동시에 그들의 이야기가 낙태를 시도하는 다른 여성들에게 도움이 되기를 바라고 있다고 합니다. 본 연구는 개인 또는 단체 공식 SNS 계정 플랫폼에서 낙태 경험을 공유한 15 명의 여성을 대상으로 온라인 심층 인터뷰를 통해 이뤄졌습니다.그들의 이야기는 온라인에서 운동의 일부로 여겨지며, 자신의 경험을 공유하는 것뿐만 아니라 그들이 다양한 해시태그와 게시물을 통하여 무료 낙태 및 합법적 낙태의 중요성을 강조했습니다. 동시에 여성들은 낙태에 대한 인식을 카르마에서 그들의 자유와 관련된 행동으로 바꾸면서 경제 및 교육, 문화적까지 포함하여 그들의 결정과 관련된 다른 측면도 주장했습니다. 최종적으로 이러한 내러티브는 낙태와 출산 정의 운동의 관계를 보여주며, 태국의 생식 의료 시스템에서 온라인 세계의 중요성을 강조합니다.
