dc.description.abstractRecent studies have raised the potentiality of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) in relation to working memory and response inhibition. However, there is a lack of research focused on healthy older adults and right ear stimulation due to several safety concerns. In the present study, we explore the differential improvements through either side of taVNS in both linguistic working and non-linguistic working memory (n-back task), and response inhibition (Go/NoGo task), under various levels of working memory load. In this cross-over study, 74 older adults underwent a two-session (two-day visits), once with taVNS (cymba concha), once with sham stimulation, counterbalanced the order of sessions. In taVNS session, 37 received right ear stimulation and the other 37 received left ear stimulation. The results are that the left ear stimulation group only significantly enhanced hits (%) of linguistic 2-back task. However, this effect was not observed in the linguistic 1-back task, the non-linguistic n-back task, or the Go/NoGo inhibitory control task. On the other hand, the group receiving right ear stimulation not only exacerbated performance in the linguistic 2-back task but also failed to yield any significant improvement in other tasks. Left taVNS is, therefore, a encouraging tool for neuromodulation of linguistic/verbal working memory. The overarching goal beyond this research is to optimize its therapeutic utility for healthy older adults’ cognitive ability.;최근 비침습적 외이미주신경 자극술 (transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation,이하 taVNS)을 사용하여 인지기능을 조절하는 시도가 이루어지는 가운데, 그 효과가 특히 작업기억에서 두드러진다고 보고되고 있다. 그러나 선행연구들은 건강한 청년층과 왼쪽 자극부위로 한정적이다. 이를 고려하여 본 연구는 건강한 노년층을 대상으로 왼쪽 자극과 오른쪽 자극에 따라서 taVNS가 언어적 및 비언어적 작업기억 능력에 영향을 주는지 알아보고자 한다 (n-back 과제). 또한 taVNS가 작업기억 부하에 따른 반응억제능력에 영향을 주는지도 살펴보았다 (Go/NoGo 과제). 본 연구는 교차 연구로써, 74명의 노년층이 총 이틀 방문하여 active자극과 sham (가짜)자극을 각각 한 번씩 인가하였고, 참가자 간 자극 순서를 역균형화 하였다. active 자극 방문 시, 74명 중 37명이 왼쪽 자극을 나머지 37명이 오른쪽 자극을 받았다. 왼쪽 taVNS가 더 어려운 언어작업기억 과제(2-back)의 수행력을 높였지만, 오른쪽 taVNS는 오히려 수행력을 악화시켰다. 한편, 왼쪽 및 오른쪽 taVNS 자극은 비언어 작업기억 및 반응억제능력을 향상시키지 않았다. 따라서 본 연구는 노년층의 언어적 작업기억 능력을 증진시키기 위한 taVNS의 뇌신경 자극술의 잠재력을 확인하였다.*
