- Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising battery systems providing a number of advantages. However, ZIBs encounter obstacles caused by the formation of Zn dendrites and side reactions. These issues lead to a decline in performance and short-circuits. To address these challenges, a composite protective layer (CPL) were investigated in this work.
A hydrophobic supramolecular metal-organic framework (SMOF) coating layer was introduced into ZIBs using α-cyclodextrin-based MOF (α-CD-MOF-K) and PVDF-HFP. The PVDF-HFP was chosen for the reason that it would have greater ionic conductivity and binding affinity with Zr-MOF and Zn metal anode than a PVDF homopolymer binder. And this aspect will lead in lower overpotential and increased cyclability. The hexagonal flat α-CD-MOF-K and PVDF-HFP combined to form dense and homogeneous Zn2+ ion conductive pore channels that permitted vertical transit of Zn2+ ions while inhibiting water molecules. The homogeneous deposition and dissolution allowed the creation of a regular solid-electrolyte interface layer, successfully inhibiting side reactions with free water molecules. The α-CD-MOF-K-CPL@Zn symmetric cell exhibited a low polarization voltage of about 100 mV at 10 mA cm–2. And the α-CD-MOF-K-CPL@Zn|α-MnO2 full cell maintained 99.4% capacity after 100 h at 0.1 A g–1, indicating that the SMOF coating layer has the potential to improve the performance and cyclability of ZIBs.
