Conceptualizing Asian Women’s Studies

Abstract

This dissertation explores the two essential aspects of Asian Women’s Studies (AWS): the conceptualization of ‘Asian woman’, which focuses on disrupting the western ceter through a re-examination of dominant constructions of Asian women or Asian feminism and institutionalization, which aims to mobilize Asian women as transnational political subjects in the globalizing context. To understand the ways in which the AWS scholarship contributes to and limits the AWS agenda of reconstructing Asian women’s identities and Asian feminisms, I examine the establishment of the Asian Center for Women’s Studies (ACWS) at Ewha Womans University in South Korea and the scholarly production of ACWS’ Asian Journal of Women’s Studies (AJWS) and the Association of Asian Women’s Studies (AAWS). This study finds that through the attempt to decenter their work from Western universalism, many AWS scholars intensify attention to local and national levels at the expense of the necessary critique of the global within the local. In addition, I find that over a quarter of the Asian countries remain invisible in the AJWS scholarship with East Asia recentered at the top of the pyramid. I posit that to allow for new alternative feminist epistemologies to flourish, AWS needs to challenge the centralizing tendency of neoliberal university systems by fostering periphery to periphery (South-South) intercontinental links. ;본 논문은 아시아여성학(AWS)에 대한 본질적인 측면을 두 가지로 구분하여 탐색한다. 첫째, 아시아 여성에 대한 지배적인 구성이나 아시아 페미니즘에 대한 재조명을 통해 서구 중심을 교란하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있는 '아시아 여성'에 대한 개념화와 둘째, 세계화의 맥락에서 아시아 여성이 초국적의 정치적 주체로 구성되는 것을 목표로 하는 제도화이다. AWS 장학금이 아시아 여성의 정체성과 아시아 페미니즘을 재구성하고 AWS 연구에 기여하는 방식을 이해하기 위해 이화여자대학교의 아시아여성학센터(ACWS) 설립과 연구 성과를 검토하였다. 또한, 아시아여성학센터에서 발간하고 있는 아시아여성학저널(AJWS) 및 아시아여성연구협회(AAWS)의 결과물을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 많은 AWS 학자들이 서구 보편주의로부터 자신의 연구를 독립시키려는 시도를 통해 비판을 감당하면서 지역 내 글로벌화를 위해 지역 및 국가 수준의 관심을 강화하고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 아시아 국가의 4분의 1 이상에서 AJWS 장학금이 보이지 않는 상태로 활용되고 있었다. 동아시아는 피라미드의 맨 위의 중앙에 위치하고 있다. 따라서 새로운 대안적 페미니스트 인식론이 번창할 수 있도록 AWS가 주변부에서 주변부로(남-남) 대륙 간 연결을 촉진함으로써 신자유주의 대학 시스템의 중앙 집중화를 위해 노력해야 한다고 생각한다. 본 결과를 통해 저자는 다음을 제안한다. 첫째, 아시아를 공간적 지도로 상상하기보다는 사회-공간적 지도를 사용하여 전통적인 아시아 및 세계적 가부장적 제도를 지지하는 단일한 위계 및 네트워크 체계를 설계해야 한다고 제안합니다. 이 계층 구조에는 시스템을 방해할 가능성도 포함되어 있다. 둘째, 탈식민적, 교차적, 탈식민적 접근 방식에 대한 참여 증가를 제안합니다. 이를 통해 지역에서 글로벌에 대한 비판을 강화하고 생산적인 대륙 횡단에 참여를 촉진할 수 있습니다. 이러한 제안을 수행함으로써 AWS는 아시아 여성에 대한 이론화가 재구성할 수 있으며, 단일 지역에 고정되지 않고 학술 생산을 더욱 분산시킬 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
