2015 개정 고등학교 『동아시아사』 ‘동학 농민 운동’ 서술 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 학생들이 중학교 <역사>와 고등학교 <한국사>에서 ‘동학 농민 운동’을 학습했음을 전제로, 고등학교 선택 과목인 <동아시아사> 교과서에서 구현된 ‘동아시아사적 시각’을 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그동안 ‘동학 농민 운동’은 결과만으로는 실패였다고 말할지라도 해방 이후 한국사학계에서는 사건 자체에 대한 역사적 중요성이 인정되었다. 이에 따라 연구 또한 매우 활발히 진행되어왔으며, 한국사 영역의 교과서에서도 계속해서 비중 있게 다루어져 왔다. 그러나 ‘동학 농민 운동’은 조선의 개항 이후 한‧중‧일 3국 내외정세의 깊은 연관 속에서 발발하고 전개되었으며, ‘청‧일 전쟁’ 발발의 도화선이 된 사건이었다. 또한 ‘동학 농민 운동’으로 촉발된 ‘청‧일 전쟁’의 결과, 기존의 청 중심의 동아시아 국제 질서가 재편되었다는 점에서 동아시아사를 넘어 세계사적으로도 중요한 의미를 가지는 사건이다. 따라서 한국사와 세계사를 연결하는 성격을 가진 고등학교 <동아시아사> 과목에서는 이전의 한국사 영역에서 다루어졌던 서술과는 다르게 동아시아사적 시각이 좀 더 강조되어야 할 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 이와 같은 문제 의식을 바탕으로 지금까지 축적된 ‘동학 농민 운동’과 관련한 학계의 연구들을 확인한 후, 2015년 개정된 <동아시아사> 교육과정의 성격 및 목표, 내용체계 및 성취기준, 교과서 집필기준을 분석하였다. 그리고 이에 비추어 현재(2022년) 고등학교 교육 현장에서 사용 중인 『동아시아사』 4종 교과서에서 ‘동학 농민 운동’과 연속적 흐름에 있는 ‘청‧일 전쟁’이 어떻게 서술되고 있는지 검토하였다. 본 연구의 한계는 세계사적 맥락에서의 ‘동학 농민 운동’에 대해 주목함으로써 동아시아사적 관점에 집중하여 사건에 대한 다각적인 관점은 언급하지 못한 점, 분석을 검토하였으나 대안적 서술을 구체적으로 제시하지 못한 점 등이 있다. 그럼에도 고등학교 선택 과목인 <동아시아사> 과목에서는 ‘동학 농민 운동’의 세계사적 맥락, 동아시아사적 관점을 더 부각시켜야 한다고 판단하였고, 실제로 한국사와 세계사를 연결하는 성격을 가진 과목인 <동아시아사>에서 직접적으로 서술을 확인했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 덧붙여 본 연구는 교육 현장에서 과목의 편제상 교사가 <동아시아사> 과목뿐만 아니라 <한국사> 과목에서도 ‘동학 농민 운동’에 대한 수업을 구상할 때 동아시아사적 맥락을 보충할 수 있도록 조금이나마 도움이 되기를 기대해본다.;The purpose of this study is to review the 'East Asian Historical Perspective' implemented in the textbook of 'East Asian History', an advanced high school elective subject, on the premise that students learned ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution’ from the 'East Asian History' at middle school and ‘Korean History’ at High School. Even if it is said that the ‘Donghak Peasant Movement’ was a failure only with the results in the meantime, the historical importance of the event itself was acknowledged in the Korean historical community after liberation. The research has been conducted actively accordingly, and it has been heavily dealt with textbooks in Korean History. However, the ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution’ has been broke out and continued in the deep connection with both domestic and foreign political affairs of Korea, China, and Japan, and It was the event that triggered the ‘Cheong-Japanese War’. Moreover, as a result of the ‘Cheong-Japanese War’ triggered by the ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution’. the event takes significant meaning in world history beyond East Asian History in that existed Cheong-centered East Asian International order was reorganized. Hence the ‘East Asian History’ subject which has a characteristic of connecting Korean History and World History, the perspective of East Asian History must be more emphasized, unlike depiction that dealt in the field of Korean History in the past. Therefore the research analyzed the personalities and objectives of ‘East Asian History’ revised in 2015 as well as its curriculum, content system and accomplishment guidelines, and writing criteria of textbooks based on the awareness of the problem, after confirming the accumulated studies of academic-related to the ‘Donghak Peasant revolution’. In light of this, the research reviewed how the ‘Donghak Peasant revolution’ and ‘Cheong-Japanese War’ in a continuous flow are depicted in the four sets of ‘East Asian History’ textbooks that have been currently used in the High School education (2022). There are some limitations of the study; lack of mentions of a multifaceted view of events by focusing on the ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution’ from a World History-based perspective and the absence of a detailed presentation of alternatives despite the analysis being reviewed. Nevertheless, in the advanced elective subject at Highschool ‘East Asian History’, it was decided that the World Historical context and East Asian History perspective of ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution’ must be more emphasized, it is meaningful since it is directly described from ‘East Asian History’ that connects Korean History and World History. To add, this study could be expected to support the teachers in terms of education to guide the context of East Asian History when planning the class about ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution’ not only in the ‘East Asian History’ subjects but also the ‘Korean History Subejcts’.
