중국 출생 북한이탈주민 자녀들의 문화적 정체성 형성에 관한 내러티브 탐구

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to carry out in-depth interview with two young people who were born in China between N. Korean refugee mother and Korean-Chinese father, and attended university in S. Korea after acquiring Korean citizenship on their experiences in China before going to S. Korea as well as in S. Korea after they obtained Korean citizenship so as to explore narratively their story, especially focusing on their cultural identity in China before going to S. Korea as well as in S. Korea after obtaining Korean citizenship. In this article, the cultural identity was conceptualized as ‘socioculturally constructed recognition or feelings’ and ‘recognition or feelings as a member of specific nationality or ethnicity’ and explored at the ‘recognitive, emotional, and physical’ level. The research subjects lived in China by the age of 18 and 15 and moved to S. Korea and the conceptual construction of their stories living and forming their cultural identity was as follows. First, they had been influenced by their parents and surroundings in China and formed their cultural identity as Korean-Chinese and Chinese simultaneously and had similar recognitive, physical level, except the emotional level. Second, when it came to their experiences related to their identity formation after acquiring S. Korean citizenship in S. Korea, both of them lived independent lives and constantly changed under the influence of surroundings and environment. Though it’s expected to see their possibility of changes in future, it turned out they formed different cultural identity: ‘accepting dual cultural identities as S. Korean and Chinese’ and ‘Chinese who pretends to be S. Korean’ depending on their different experiences in forming relationships. Third, their mother’s nationality as N. Korean refugee did not have any impact on their children, especially forming their identities in the past and now. Both research subjects had been told that their mother was Korean-Chinese but later found she was actually N. Korean refugee, which explains they thought they had nothing to do with N. Korea. But their mother has obtained S. Korean citizenship, which allows the research subjects to obtain S. Korean citizenship and it leads to influence them to form their cultural identities as S. Korean. ;본 연구의 목적은 중국에서 북한이탈주민 어머니와 중국 조선족 아버지 사이에 태어났고 현재 한국 국적을 취득하여 한국에서 대학교를 다니고 있는 두 청년의 한국에 들어오기 이전 중국에서의 경험과 한국 국적을 취득한 이후 한국에서의 경험에 대한 심층 면담을 통해 이들이 한국에 들어오기 이전에 중국에서 어떤 문화적 정체성 이야기를 살아왔고, 한국에 와서 한국 국적을 취득 한 이후에는 어떠한 문화적 정체성 이야기를 살아내는지를 내러티브적으로 탐구하는 것이다. 본고에서는 문화적 정체성을 ‘사회문화적으로 구성되는’, ‘특정 국가나 민족 구성원으로서의 인식이나 감정’으로 개념화하여, ‘인지적, 정서적, 신체적’차원에서 탐구하였다. 본 연구를 이끌어가는 연구 퍼즐은 다음과 같다. 1) 연구 참여자들이 한국 국적을 취득하기 이전에 중국에서 형성한 문화적 정체성 이야기는 어떠한가? 2) 연구 참여자들이 한국 국적을 취득한 이후에 한국에서 형성하는 문화적 정체성의 이야기는 어떠한가? 연구 참여자들은 각자 18살, 15살까지 중국에서 살다가 한국에 왔으며 이들이 한국에 오기 이전에 중국에서, 그리고 한국에 와서 한국 국적을 취득한 이후 문화적 정체성 형성과 관련하여 살아낸 경험 이야기의 의미적 구성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구 참여자들은 중국에서 부모님의 영향과 주변 환경의 영향을 받으며 조선족으로서의 민족 정체성과 중국 사람으로서의 국가 정체성을 동시에 형성하면서, 인지적, 신체적 수준에서는 비슷한 양상을 보였지만 정서적 수준에서는 차이점을 보이고 있었다. 둘째, 연구 참여자들이 한국에서 한국 국적을 취득한 이후 문화적 정체성 형성에 관련된 경험들을 살펴보면, 두 연구 참여자 모두 주체적인 동시에, 주변 사람들과 환경의 영향을 받으면서 끊임없이 변화하고 있었고 앞으로도 변화 가능할 것으로 예상했지만 관계 형성 경험이 다름에 따라 ‘한국과 중국에 관한 이중 문화적 정체성의 수용’과 ‘한국 사람인 척 하는 중국사람’이라는 서로 다른 양상의 문화적 정체성을 형성한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 어머니의 북한이탈주민이라는 지위는 두 연구 참여자의 과거와 현재의 문화적 정체성 형성에는 아무런 영향을 미치지 않았다. 두 연구 참여자 모두 중국에서는 어머니를 조선족으로 알고 있다가 나중에서야 어머니가 탈북자임을 알았기 때문에 자신들은 북한이라는 나라와는 접점이 없다고 느꼈으며 어머니가 대한민국 국민이라는 현재 신분으로 인하여 연구 참여자들도 한국 국적을 취득하게 되면서 한국 사람으로서의 문화적 정체성을 형성하는데 영향을 미쳤다.
