이공계 유학생을 위한 일반화학 한국어 교재 바꿔 쓰기 방안과 효용 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 이공계 유학생을 대상으로 일반화학 대학 전공 기초 한국어 교재를 개발하여 이에 대한 효용성을 연구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 국내에 학문 목적 학습자가 증가함에 따라 유학생들의 전공 분야도 다양하게 변화하고 있다. 이에 따라 이공계 유학생도 증가하고 있는데 아직 이들을 위한 한국어 교재 개발 연구는 많지 않다. 이공계 유학생들이 성공적으로 학업을 마치고 졸업하기 위해서는 전공기초과목부터 수월하게 수강할 수 있도록 제도가 마련되어야 전공심화과목도 수강할 수 있다. 국내 대학에서도 많은 외국인 유학생들을 위해 영어 강의 확충이나 한국어 수업을 듣는데 도움이 되도록 튜터 제도 등을 실시하고 있다. 하지만 단순히 영어 강의를 늘린다고 유학생들의 근본적인 문제는 해결되지 않는다. 유학생들의 한국어 실력과 학습 능력을 향상시켜야 한국어 교양 과목이나 전공과목도 포기하지 않고 수강하여 학위를 마칠 수 있으며 이에 대한 방안이 필요하다. 그렇기 때문에 이공계 대학생들의 전공 기초과목 중의 하나인 일반화학을 선정하고 외국인 유학생을 위한 별도의 교재를 설계하였다. 이공계는 이과대학과 공과대학, 자연과학대학을 모두 포함하는 말로써 이공계 전공 안에 세부적인 전공 분야가 존재한다. 이과대학에는 물리학, 화학, 생물학, 수학 등이 있고 공학대학은 기계공학과, 화학공학과, 컴퓨터공학과 등이 포함된다. 이공계에서는 인문사회계열과 다르게 특징적인 의사소통 활동이 요구된다. 실험 수업이 있기 때문에 조교나 교수의 지시를 듣고 따라야 하며 제품이나 기계 장비 매뉴얼을 읽고 이해하고 그래프, 도표, 도면, 수식 등을 읽고 보고서를 쓰거나 계산 문제를 풀이하는 특별한 학업 기술을 필요로 한다. 이와 같은 활동은 이공계 유학생들이 학업을 수행할 때 반드시 고려되어야 하는 점이다. 또한 이공계 텍스트는 인문계열의 텍스트와는 또 다른 성격의 지식을 요구한다. 앞에서 말한 바와 같이 그래프, 일러스트레이션, 도표 등을 읽고 해석할 수 있는 능력이 필요하다. 이공계 텍스트 읽기는 단순히 읽고 이해하는 것에서 그치는 것이 아니라 더 나아가 시험 답안을 작성하고 보고서를 작성하며 과제 활동을 할 때에도 영향을 미치므로 특수한 학습 상황을 고려하여 교육이 진행되어야 한다. 이공계 유학생들이 대학 내에서 강의를 수강할 때 가장 어려워하는 분야가 어휘와 개념에 대한 부분이었다. 주로 한자어와 외래어로 구성된 전공 교재는 이공계 유학생들이 읽고 이해하기에는 어려움이 따르며 한국어로 빠르게 진행되는 강의도 유학생들에게는 듣고 이해하는 데에 많은 집중력을 요구한다. 국내 이공계 대학에서는 1학년 학생이 필수적으로 수강해야 하는 전공기초과목을 일반화학, 일반물리학, 미적분학 등으로 규정하고 있으며 전공기초과목은 학교마다 조금씩 차이가 있지만 대부분 일반화학, 일반물리학, 일반생물학, 미적분학 안에서 과목 수만 달라진다. 이렇게 전공기초과목인 일반화학은 대학교 3~4학년으로 진학하여 전공 심화 과정을 선택할 때 기본을 이루는 과목이다. 일반화학은 기초과학으로 물질의 변화와 현상, 반응을 연구하는 과목으로 이 과목을 수강해야 유기화학, 생화학, 물리화학 등 전공심화과목을 이해할 수 있다. 우리가 매일 보고 사용하는 모든 물질은 모두 화학과 연관이 있으며 화학은 일상생활에 밀접한 연관이 있는 가장 중요한 학문의 기반이 되는 것이다. 그러므로 일반화학 과목을 선정하여 이공계 유학생들에게 효과적인 학습이 되도록 도움이 되고자 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이공계 유학생들의 효율적인 학업 수학을 위해 일반화학 전공 기초 한국어 교재를 개발하고 이 교재를 바탕으로 내용 중심 교수법을 적용하여 언어와 내용 지식을 제공하는 실제 수업을 실시하였다. 수업을 실시한 후 수업의 효과를 밝히며 수업을 하면서 나타난 문제점을 수정·보완하는 작업을 거쳐 더 나은 일반화학 전공 기초 한국어 교재를 제시하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서 설정한 연구 질문은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이공계 유학생을 대상으로 일반화학 전공 기초 한국어 교재 개발은 어떻게 개발해야 하는가? 둘째, 이공계 유학생을 대상으로 일반화학 전공 기초 한국어 교재를 개발한 후 수업을 실시한 결과는 어떠한가? 셋째, 수업을 실시한 후 성찰을 통해 개선해야 하는 문제점은 무엇이며 이를 반영하여 개발된 전공 기초 한국어 교재의 구성은 어떠한가? 이 연구 문제를 해결하기 위해 일련의 과정으로 수행되었다. 연구 수행의 첫 번째 단계에서 이공계 유학생들을 대상으로 국내 대학 생활에 대한 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 현재 국내 대학 이공계 학부에서 재학 중인 유학생들을 대상으로 전공과목에 대한 어려움, 외국인 전용 프로그램과 전공 교재가 필요한지 아닌지를 알아보았다. 이렇게 실시한 설문 조사를 통해서 많은 이공계 유학생들이 전공과목을 수강할 때 어려움을 겪고 있는 것을 확인하였고 한국인 학생과 분리하여 별도의 외국인 전용 프로그램이나 외국인 전용 전공 교재가 제작될 필요가 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 요구 분석을 토대로 일반화학 전공 기초 한국어 교재를 제작하였으며 전공 수업에서 가장 어려움을 느낀다고 응답한 부분인 전공 어휘와 전공 개념을 중심으로 하여 외국인 유학생들이 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 개작하는데 중점을 두었다. 1차로 제작한 일반화학 교재를 실제 교실 현장에 적용하여 외국인 학습자들을 대상으로 교육을 진행하였다. 1차 실험 연구를 거친 후 직접 수업해 본 학생들의 의견을 서술형 설문 조사를 실시하여 알아보았다. 충분한 설문 조사를 통해 마련된 자료를 다시 적용하여 2차 교재 수정 작업을 거쳤으며 수정된 일반화학 교재를 다시 수업에 적용하였다. 2차 수정에서는 학습자들이 보완되었으면 좋겠다고 서술한 어휘 부분을 반영하여 교재를 수정하여 실험 연구를 진행하였다. 2차 수업을 진행한 후 다시 3차 설문 조사를 실시하여 일반화학 교재의 문제점과 보완되어야 할 점을 조사하였다. 3차 최종 개작 과정에는 한국어 교육 전문가와 이공계 전공 전문가의 의견을 조사하고 학습자의 의견과 종합하여 더 다양하고 실제적인 전공 지식과 한국어 교육 내용이 활용되도록 수정하였다. 이렇게 최종 수정을 거쳐 교재를 완성하였으며, 이공계 유학생들이 국내 대학에서 교양과목 및 전공과목을 수강할 때 외국인 전용 전공과목이 개설된다면 그들의 학업에 도움이 되리라 판단하고 제안하였다. 이공계 유학생들은 영어 강의가 아닌 한국어로 진행되는 강의를 듣는 것을 원하며 이들의 요구에 맞추어 적합한 교재와 교육과정이 개설된다면 유학생들의 학업 부담감을 줄일 수 있고 적극적으로 대학 생활에 참여하여 졸업 과정까지 성공적으로 이끌 수 있다. 물론 이런 교육을 시행하는 것에는 재정적인 문제와 인력 자원 등 다양한 문제가 발생할 수 있다. 그렇게 때문에 모든 전공과목을 외국인 전용 분반으로 개설할 것이 아니라 1학년을 대상으로 하는 전공기초과목만이라도 외국인 분반으로 개설하여 학업을 이어나갈 수 있도록 지원한다면 전공심화과목을 수강할 때 많은 도움이 될 것으로 본다. 본 연구는 실행 연구로 일반화학 전공 기초 한국어 교재를 적용한 수업이 통계적으로 얼마나 유의미한지 검증하는 절차를 거치지 못하였고 실험 대상이 일부 유학생에 불과하여 이에 한계점이 있다. 그러나 한국어 교육 분야에서 이공계 유학생을 대상으로 하는 교재 연구가 거의 없는 상황에서 이를 개발하고 수업에 적용하였다는 점에서 의의가 있으며 차후에 교재를 더 연구하고 보완하여 실제 한국어 교육 현장에서 활용할 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 본 연구에서 제시한 일반화학 전공 기초 한국어 교재가 이공계 한국어 교재로 기반이 되어 이공계 유학생들의 학업 고충을 해결하고 이들의 성공적인 한국 유학생활에 도움이 될 수 있도록 발전되기를 기대한다.;The purpose of this study is to develop basic Korean textbooks for science and engineering international students majoring in general chemistry and to study their effectiveness. As the number of learners for academic purposes increases in Korea, the major fields of international students are also changing in various ways. Accordingly, the number of international students in science and engineering is increasing, but there are not many studies on the development of Korean textbooks for them yet. In order for international students in science and engineering to successfully complete their studies and graduate, a system must be established so that they can easily take basic major courses to take in-depth major courses. Domestic universities are also implementing tutor systems to help expand English lectures and take Korean classes for many foreign students. However, simply increasing English lectures does not solve the fundamental problems of international students. Only when international students improve their Korean language skills and learning skills can they complete their degrees by taking Korean liberal arts courses or major courses without giving up, and measures are needed. Therefore, generalization, one of the basic major subjects of science and engineering college students, was selected and a separate textbook was designed for foreign students. Science and engineering is a term that includes all of science, engineering, and natural science colleges, and there are detailed majors in science and engineering majors. Science colleges include physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics, while engineering colleges include mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and computer engineering. Unlike humanities and social sciences, science and engineering requires characteristic communication activities. Since there is an experimental class, you must listen to and follow instructions from an assistant or professor, and you need special academic skills to read and understand product or mechanical equipment manuals, read graphs, charts, drawings, formulas, write reports, or solve computational problems. Such activities must be considered when international students in science and engineering conduct their studies. In addition, science and engineering texts require knowledge of a different character than humanities texts. As mentioned above, it is necessary to have the ability to read and interpret graphs, illustrations, diagrams, etc. Reading science and engineering texts is not just reading and understanding, but further affects writing test answers, writing reports, and conducting assignment activities, so education should be conducted in consideration of special learning situations. Science and engineering students on college campuses when course from the areas in which we find the most difficult vocabulary and concepts for the high point. In this study, therefore, efficient basic Korean language major in math general chemistry for studies of science and engineering students to develop English textbooks and teaching materials based on applying language teaching methods and content around the content knowledge to provide actual lessons. Through this survey, it was confirmed that many science and engineering international students were having difficulty taking major courses, and it was found that separate programs for foreigners or textbooks for foreigners needed to be produced separately from Korean students. Based on this demand analysis, basic Korean textbooks for general chemistry majors were produced, and the focus was on revising them for easy understanding by foreign students, focusing on vocabulary and major concepts, which are the parts that responded that they felt the most difficult in major classes.
