학문 목적 한국어 교육을 위한 유학생 학위논문의 헤지 표현 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 유학생 학위논문에서 고빈도 헤지 표현인 ‘-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다’를 분석하여 유학생들의 세 헤지 표현 사용 양상을 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 유학생들은 학업 생활에서 언어 기능 중 쓰기에서 가장 어려움을 느끼는데 유학생들이 대학 및 대학원을 졸업하기 위해 꼭 거쳐야 하는 쓰기는 바로 ‘논문’이다. 특히 ‘논문’은 관습적으로 학술공동체 내에서 사용되어 온 구조와 수사적 표현을 따라야 한다. 하지만 한국어가 부족하고 쓰기에 어려움을 느끼는 유학생들은 이에 대한 이해가 부족하여 학위논문 작성에 더 어려움을 겪는다. 헤지 표현은 학술텍스트의 대표적인 특징으로, 저자가 진술을 완화하여 표현하는 것을 말한다. 헤지 표현은 저자의 진술을 완화시켜 논문의 설득력을 더 높여주며, 반박으로부터 저자의 체면을 보호하는 역할을 한다. 그러므로 학위논문에서 헤지 표현의 사용은 필수적이라고 할 수 있다. ‘-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다’는 논문에서 자주 사용되는 고빈도 헤지 표현이다. 그런데 아직까지 이 세 헤지 표현을 유학생의 학위논문을 대상으로 살펴본 연구는 없었다. 이에 본 연구는 유학생의 학위논문을 수집, 가공 후 ‘-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다’의 출현 빈도, 구조별 양상, 사용 양상을 분석하였다. 1장에서는 연구의 필요성과 목적을 밝히고, 선행연구를 살펴보았다. 선행연구 검토 결과 헤지 표현에 대한 연구는 그 편수가 많지 않았고, 주요 헤지 표현에 대해 집중적으로 고찰한 연구도 드물었다. 2장에서는 학술텍스트의 개념과 장르적 특성, 헤지 표현에 대해 기술하였다. 헤지 표현의 개념과 기능 및 유형을 정리 후, 논문에서 자주 나타나는 헤지 표현은 무엇이고, 어떤 특성이 있는지를 파악하여 이론적 토대를 마련하였다. 3장에서는 연구의 분석 대상이 되는 유학생 학위논문의 수집 방법과 선정 기준을 제시하고 목록을 제시하였다. 그 결과 유학생의 석사학위논문 30편이 선정되었다. 그리고 헤지 표현의 판단 기준과 학위논문에서 헤지 표현을 추출한 분석 기준을 제시하였다. 4장에서는 분석 결과 나타난 유학생의 학위논문에서 세 헤지 표현의 출현 양상과 사용 양상에 대해 논의하였다. 유학생의 학위논문 전체 구성에서 ‘-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다’의 출현 빈도 순위는 ‘-ㄹ 수 있다 > -로 보이다 > -ㄹ 것이다’로 나타났고, ‘-ㄹ 수 있다’의 빈도는 두 헤지 표현에 비해 압도적으로 높게 나타났다. 논문 세부 구조별로도 비슷한 순위로 나타났다. 논문의 세부 구조별로 헤지 표현이 가장 많이 사용된 구조는 결과 및 논의부분이었으며, 전체 헤지 표현의 58%가 결과 및 논의에서 사용되고 있었다. 다음으로 세 헤지 표현의 결합 형태와 구체적인 사용 양상을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 각 헤지 표현에는 고빈도로 결합하는 어휘와 형태들이 있었고, 정형화된 표현들이 사용되고 있었다. 그러나 유학생들은 한국어 모어 화자와 비교했을 때 결합 형태를 다양하게 사용하지 못하고 있었다. 헤지 표현의 구체적인 사용을 살펴본 결과, 유학생들은 헤지 표현을 사용함에 있어 자연스럽지 않은 양상을 보였는데, 크게 과도한 헤지 표현 사용, 어색한 용언 결합, 어색한 조사 결합, 알맞지 않은 헤지 표현 결합 등으로 나뉘었다. 이런 자료는 한국어 학습자들에게 헤지 표현을 교육할 때 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 유학생의 학위논문 전체 구성에서 고빈도 헤지 표현인 ‘-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다’의 출현 빈도 및 구조별 출현 양상을 살펴본 점과 결합 형태, 사용 양상을 심층적으로 살펴본 점에서 의의가 있다. 본고의 분석 결과가 학문 목적 한국어교육에 조금이나마 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대해본다. ;The purpose of this study is to analyze the use of three hedge expressions by analyzing “-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다” which are substantially used hedge expressions in international student theses. International students predominantly have difficulty writing among language functions in their academic life. But international students must write a “thesis” to graduate from university and graduate school. In particular, the “thesis” should follow the structure and rhetorical expression conventionally used in the academic community. However, international students who have difficulty writing and lack Korean language skills also have difficulty writing a thesis because of a lack of understanding about the fact the researcher mentioned above. A hedge expression is a typical feature of academic text, which means that the author relaxes the statement. Hedge expressions ease the author’s statements and enhance the persuasiveness of the thesis while protecting the face of the author from refutation. Therefore, it can be said that the use of hedge expressions in a thesis is essential. “-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다”are largely used hedge expressions often seen in theses. However, there have been no studies on the use of these three hedge expressions for foreign students’ thesis. Therefore, this study analyzed the frequency, structure, and usage patterns of “-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다”after collecting and processing theses of international students. In Chapter 1, a researcher clarified the necessity and purpose of this study and examined previous studies. As a result of previous studies, there have been a small number of studies on hedge expressions and there have been even fewer studies focusing on major hedge expressions. In Chapter 2, the concepts of the scholarly text, genre characteristics, and hedge expressions are described. After analyzing the concept, function, and type of hedge expressions, the hedge expression which is repeated in the paper is identified and the theoretical foundation is established by comprehending what type of characteristic it is. In Chapter 3, a researcher presented a list of methods and criteria for the collection of theses of international students. As a result, thirty theses submitted for masters degrees written by international students were selected. The criterion of the hedge expression and the hedge expressions extracted from the theses were presented. In Chapter 4, a researcher discussed the emergence and usage patterns of three hedge expressions in the theses of international students after the analysis. In the overall composition of theses of international students, the frequency ranking of “-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다” appeared as follows:” -ㄹ 수 있다> -로 보이다> -ㄹ 것이다.” and the frequency of “-ㄹ 수 있다”was overwhelmingly higher than that of both hedge expressions. Similar results were obtained for each sub-structure. Hedge expression structure is the most frequently used and the result of hedge expressions are 58% of total hedge expressions. Next, a researcher examined the combination of three hedge expressions and specific usage patterns. As a result, there were vocabulary and forms combining substantially in each hedge expression, and formalized expressions were used. However, international students were not able to use various types of combinations when compared with Korean as the mother tongue language speakers. As a result of examining the specific use of hedge expressions, international students showed that they were not naturally inclined in using hedge expressions. They were largely divided into excessive use of hedge expressions, unpleasant verb conjugations, awkward research combinations, and inappropriate combinations of hedge expressions. This data can be used to teach hedge expressions to Korean language students. This study is meaningful in that it examines the frequency of considerably used hedge expressions “-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다”and the appearance pattern by the structure in the whole composition of the theses of the international students, and examines the combination form and usage patterns in depth Researchers hope that the analysis results of this thesis will help a small amount in Korean language education for academic purposes.
