Abstract
;Humans carefully observe certain parts in a complex environment and act on the basis of inference(Ball, 2011). The Cognitive psychology refers to this as noticing, and describes it as a cognitive strategy for long-term memory, processing information through cognitive processes such as individual recognition, perception, reasoning, and decision-making(Robinson, 1995). Anthropology describes it in a variety of terms, such as profession vision, situation awareness, and expert viewing, but its meaning is the same as a cognitive framework that looks at a particular phenomenon formed through social interaction within a group(Goodwin, 1994; Miler, 2011). Such noticing is a cognitive strategy that is unconsciously performed in daily life, but must be consciously performed in the educational environment, and is characterized by the classroom interaction. In math classes dealing with complex mathematical objects, noticing mathematically significant objects is an essential cognitive process to achieve learning goals. In mathematics education, the noticing research of teachers and students is being actively proceeded. In summing up the views of the various researchers, the teacher’s noticing is defined as a cognitive process which is focused on mathematical objects, students' mathematical thinking, students' emotions, teaching strategies, classroom environment and interprets them to determine how to react(Jacobs et al., 2010; Kilpatrick et al., 2015; Liu, 2014; Star et al., 2011; van Es & Sherin, 2002). Also, the student’s noticing is defined as the cognitive process that is focused on, infers, connects and manipulates the mathematical concept and expression(Lobato et al., 2013; Sajka & Rosiek, 2015; Sullivan, 2013). From this, noticing is cognitive process which is a combined form of the objects and cognitive behavior. while the objects whom teachers notice covers up the mathematical objects and the teaching objects, the cognitive behavior (attention, interpretation, reaction) is similar to students’. Since the noticing is a cognitive strategy that helps students develop mathematical meaning in math classes that take into account the triad relationship of teachers, students, and knowledge, teachers and students need to pay attention to mathematical objects in order to successfully lead mathematics teaching and learning. Kilpatrick (2015) and Lobato (2013) described it as mathematical noticing. This research defined the mathematical noticing as a cognitive process that teachers and students pay attention to mathematical objects(conceptual objects, perceptual characteristic), interpret it and react. On the other hand, unlike teachers who are skilled in handling mathematical objects, students can face difficulties. Students pay attention to the mathematical objects different from teachers’, also they noticed differently despite same mathematical objects (Mason, 2011, p. 47). The mathematical noticing of teachers and other students can cause students to form inappropriate and incomplete mathematical meaning, and because of the nature of the highly pedantic mathematics teaching, it can have a more negative effect on later math learning. In addition, it can lead to inefficient communication between teachers and students (Mason, 2011). Therefore, for successful mathematics teaching and learning, the difference in the mathematical noticing of teachers and students must be narrowed. According to Goodwin(1994), in social interactions involving discourse practices such as categorization, empahsis and expression, non-specialists gradually have a professional perspective. Plus, Sørenz-Ludlow (2006) stated that the differences between teachers and students will be narrowed by a communication strategy that interprets mathematical symbols, and the common mathematical meaning formed in the process will converge with the goal of learning mathematics. The following research questions were established in this study: 1. Does the student's noticing to mathematical objects differ from the teacher's? What causes the difference? 2. What is the teacher's teaching strategy that influences narrowing the differences in mathematical noticing in classroom interaction and shaping the mathematical meaning of the student? To answer these questions, the linear function classes involving teachers and seven students were set up as a case. In order to ensure the validity and reliability of the study results, the data collected from class recording, nonparticipation observation, and unstructured interviews were analyzed in a variety of ways with several researchers. The teacher's teaching strategy was analyzed to narrow the cause and difference of mathematical noticing from coded data. Studies have shown that differences in mathematical noticing are divided into cases where the objects paid attention to are different, and where the objects are same, but interprets or responds differently. The causes for such differences were shown to be due to the advanced and current concept, surface and intrinsic perceptual characteristic, origin and objective expressions, various conditions for solving a problem, the understanding of the conceptual objects, the various interpretations of the mathematical expression, different definitions of conceptual objects, and the different expression method of conceptual objects. These differences in mathematical attention have been reduced by strategies such as retelling and highlighting a student's remarks, highlighting them once more at the end of the interaction, making and emphasizing expressions, symbolic or graphic representations to divert the student's attention, reminding a previously learned concept and expressing a relationship with the current concept, correction for making the wrong response the subject of class discussion, extending retelling, repeating various problem-solving strategies, retelling while watching. The conclusions and implications of this were first, the difference in mathematical noticing is distinguished in either the object which is paid attention to is different or the object is same but differently interpreted or react. The cause of each difference could be described as mathematical objects such as conceptual objects and perceptual features. Second, teachers' teaching strategies, which narrow the gap in attention and play a key role in the formation of mathematical meaning, appeared in various places(recalling and symbolic representation, symbolic representation, retelling and emphasizing, repetition, retelling after watching). This teaching strategy was implemented to distract students’ attention. Third, the teaching strategy, which narrows the differences in interpretation and plays a key role in the formation of mathematical meaning, appeared in various ways such as emphasizing once more at the end, expressing symbolic or graphic, recalibrate, retelling which is extending, recalling. Fourth, the teacher’s teaching strategy, which narrows the differences in response and plays an important role in the formation of mathematical meaning, appeared as emphasizing once more at the end, making and emphasizing graphic or symbolic expressions, repetition, retelling after watching. This study confirmed the hypothesis by example that the mathematical attention of teachers and students in math classes will differ depending on the object to which they pay attention, and that difference will be narrowed through teacher’s discourse practice and teaching strategies through communication strategies. Based on this, I would like to make a few suggestions for further development of teaching expertise to make successful mathematical teaching, learning and the follow-up study. First, studies can be conducted to link and analyze differences in student learning patterns and mathematical noticing. Second, as in the teacher’s noticing study, the mathematical noticing of a teacher can also be seen to be developed by participation in a teacher learning community consisting of experienced and first-time teachers or professional development program. Third, The types and characteristics of students' discourse practice and communication strategies can be analyzed to narrow the differences in mathematical noticing among students in the call group cooperation class situation and to form common meaning.
