Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore what the disabled and non-disabled people have experienced during choir activities and to identify in-depth the changes they went through. In order to achieve this goal, a total of 25 sessions were taken place and observed from March to November, and data was collected on two 3rd level developmentally disabled, one physically disabled, three non-disabled, the principal of ‘Firefly Culture School’, the conductor, as well as one parent through in-depth interviews about the choir activities. This data was then analyzed using spiral analysis methods. The results are as follows. First, the experience of choir activities involving both the disabled and non-disabled had meaning in that the students could meet a new world. They provided each other with an opportunity to come in contact with a new environment which allowed them to meet a new world they have never experienced before. As well, through the joy of making sounds together, they were able to get rid of the awkwardness and perceive the experience as something personal and special. Second, the choir activities of the disabled and non-disabled allowed the discovery of hidden talents. Various musical talents were discovered while preparing for the recitals, and it could be learned that the musical functions evolved on step further to affect their daily lives in society. It could be observed that students were able to recognize themselves and others, which was something they weren’t able to do usually, and develop not only interpersonal relationships but also judge their own identities to reconstitute their personalities. Third, both the disabled and non-disabled students were able to move forward to a bigger world through choir activities. They were given new opportunities by simply observing the choir activities or by actually participating in them. As well, students were able to naturally experience positive peer experiences while preparing for performances. The experience of performing on stage suggests that one can break away from being a neglected being among families and all other relationships to shine on one’s own, as well as transform into a more mature and recognized being in all relationships. Fourth, the changes that resulted from choir activities of the disabled and non-disabled were influenced by the physical environment. It could be observed that the ‘Firefly Culture School’, where the disabled and non-disabled could interact with each other, was considered as a special space on its own. There was a continuity created as the front yard of the school was used for the regular art festival stage and resulted in affecting the performance of participants who were familiar with the space. Moreover, participants’ changes could be seen due to musical elements, specifically rhythm and accompaniment. Although each student perceived different musical elements as important, it could be learned that their musical knowledge improved as they considered each element to form an overall divergent thinking about choir. Fifth, of all changes that occurred from the choir activities of the disabled and non-disabled, the fact that students were influenced by their peers in terms of the social environment is noteworthy. It could be seen how students improved their weak musical skills together by listening to each other and singing along. Participating in choir activities together, students were able to have strong sense of cooperation and solidarity, and as they gained more experience, the non-disabled students gradually lost their prejudices towards the disabled students. Also, the students were able to gain confidence that they can do not only singing in a choir but also anything with confidence in a world where it’s easy to lose confidence. Therefore, it was suggested in this paper how the choir activities involving both the disabled and non-disabled students brought not only positive aspects but also negative aspects, and that there is a need to study this from various perspectives. Furthermore, it was suggested that there is a need to study the different characteristics and experiences of various types of disabilities. Based on this research, it can be anticipated that further studies will be made on what kind of experiences and changes could occur, in terms of not only the music field but also in terms of all other fields, in special communities such as the ‘Firefly Culture School’.
