루이스 체스 말로 중세 유럽 알아보기

Abstract

Keeping up with rapidly changing era, various approaches to the contents of education and learning methods are required. In the history education, the need for the development of lessons that can lead learner as active participants and use of various teaching materials is required. Therefore, beyond the acquisition of historical knowledge by the learner, move to understand the modern society and to predict the future based on this are important. As an effective way to achieve this, a lesson to utilize relics can be suggested. Relics are effective historical materials that can narrow the distance between past and present. Historical lessons using relics have already been presented as an alternative to knowledge transfer class through a lot of research. However, due to problems in the progress of the curriculum, it is a reality that there are restrictions on the use of the curriculum. Thus, in this study, the researcher tried to develop the history lesson using relics by paying attention to history clubs in high school creative activities. The relics used in the research were the Lewis chessmen which represent the medieval European society in the 12th and 13th centuries. Since the invention of the chess, it has always played a role in reflecting the society. Through the Lewis chessmen, the hierarchical society of medieval European, Christian society and political participation of upper class women who were relatively active compared to other regions can be examined. To this end, first, the researcher summarize the basic 'rules and features' of chess, and examine the scholarly research on the ‘materialistic characteristics’ and 'relations with medieval European society' of the Lewis chessmen. Based on the research, developing a lesson plan to understand the medieval European society using Lewis chessmen and the lessons were held. In the class, through the activities of making chess pieces that reflect our society by students themselves, and they tried to understand and analyze modern society. After then, by analyzing the students' notes and activity results and confirming the achievement of the learning objectives, the effectiveness of the class verified. The meaning of this study is to learn the background knowledge about medieval Europe, through the learning the hierarchical society of medieval Europe, the Christian society and the political participation of upper class women by using Lewis chessmen. In addition, it is meaningful that is able to achieve the application goal of history education through the activities that apply contents of learning to our society.;급변하는 시대에 발맞춰 교육의 내용 및 학습 방법에 대한 다양한 접근이 요구되는 가운데, 역사교육에서는 학습자를 적극적인 참여자로 이끌 수 있는 수업의 개발과 다양한 교재 활용의 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 따라서 학습자가 단순히 역사 지식을 습득하는 것을 넘어 이를 토대로 현대 사회를 이해하고 미래를 예측하는 단계로 나아가는 것이 중요하다고 할 수 있겠다. 이를 달성할 수 있는 효과적인 방법으로 유물 활용 수업을 제안할 수 있다. 유물은 과거와 현재의 거리를 좁힐 수 있는 효과적인 역사 교재이다. 유물을 활용한 역사 수업은 이미 많은 연구를 통해 지식 전달식 수업의 대안으로 제시되고 있다. 그러나 교과 진도상의 문제 등으로 정규 교과 과정에서는 활용의 제약이 있는 것이 현실이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 고등학교 창의적 체험활동 속 역사 동아리에 주목하여 유물을 활용한 역사 수업을 개발하고자 하였다. 연구에 활용한 유물은 12~13세기경의 중세 유럽 사회를 대표하는 루이스 체스 말이다. 체스는 발명된 이래 끊임없이 사회를 반영한 거울의 역할을 하였다. 루이스 체스 말을 통해서는 중세 유럽의 신분제 사회, 기독교 사회 그리고 다른 지역에 비해 상대적으로 활발했던 상류층 여성의 정치 참여 등을 살필 수 있다. 이를 위해 우선 체스의 기본적인 ‘규칙과 특징’을 정리하고, 루이스 체스 말의 ‘유물적 특성’ 및 ‘중세 유럽 사회와의 관계’에 대한 학계의 연구를 살펴보았다. 연구를 토대로 루이스 체스 말을 활용해 중세 유럽 사회를 파악할 수 있는 수업 방안을 개발하여 수업을 진행하였다. 수업에서는 학생 스스로 우리 사회를 반영한 체스 말을 제작해보는 활동을 통해 현대 사회에 대한 이해와 분석을 도모하고자 하였다. 이후에는 학생들의 정리 노트와 활동 결과물을 분석하고 학습 목표 달성 여부를 파악하여 수업의 효용성을 검증하였다. 본 연구의 의의는 루이스 체스 말을 활용해 중세 유럽 사회의 신분제 사회, 기독교 사회, 상류층 여성의 정치 참여 등을 이해함으로써 학습자가 흥미롭게 중세 유럽에 대한 배경지식을 학습하는 데 의의가 있다. 또한 학습 내용을 실제 우리 사회에 적용해보는 활동을 통해 역사 교육의 적용 목표를 달성할 수 있다는 데 의의가 있다.
