Abstract
In the future society, the amount of knowledge and information increase exponentially. In this context, it is impossible for a person to learn all knowledge from school. Rather, an individual need to find out necessary knowledge and filter out the unnecessary information. The revised mathematics curriculum of 2015 states mathematical competencies, and in explaining the attitude and practice competency, autonomous mathematics learning attitude is explicitly stated, which clearly shows the importance of self-regulated learning ability. In addition, self-regulated learning ability is crucial in learning mathematics because the complex process that understanding new information based on acquired information is inevitable in developing other mathematical competencies. The earlier studies on self-regulated learning ability has mainly focused on either general learning or mathematics learning. The results of those studies focus on the fact that there exists a huge gap between achievement level and interests especially in mathematics learning compared to other subjects. Thus, there was little research on difference in self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and other subjects, respectively. In addition, it is considered that there are differences between male and female students in many areas including abilities. Research on analyzing domestic and foreign achievement test results or studying awareness of gender difference has been done many times. However, there has been little research on studying the gender differences in mathematics learning and learning other subjects on the same group. Therefore, this study analyzed the difference between self-regulated learning in mathematics and self-regulated learning in other subjects, and the relationship between self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and the mathematics learning achievement level on 1st grade middle school students. In addition, this study specifies gender differences. Furthermore, based on those results, this study analyzed the characteristics of the sub-elements of self-regulated learning ability revealed in the discourse of 1st grade middle school students in mathematics class in relation to self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and gender. For the purpose of the study, the following questions were set up: 1. What is the relationship among self-regulated learning ability in mathematics, self-regulated learning ability in other subjects, and the mathematics learning achievement level of 1st grade middle school students? 1-1. What is the difference between the self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and the self-regulated learning ability in other subjects of 1st grade middle school students? 1-2. How the self-regulated learning ability in mathematics are related to the mathematics learning achievement level? 1-3. What is the difference in sub-elements of self-regulated learning ability revealed in the discourse of 1st grade middle school students in the mathematics class depending on their level of self- regulated learning ability in mathematics. 2. What is the relationship among self-regulated learning ability in mathematics, self-regulated learning ability in other subjects and the mathematics achievement level in 1st grade middle school students depending on the gender? 2-1. What is the difference in 1st grade middle school students’ self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and self-regulated learning ability in other subjects between gender groups? 2-2. What is the relationship between 1st grade middle school students’ self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and mathematics learning achievement level depending on the gender? 2-3 What is the gender difference in the sub-elements of self-regulated learning ability revealed in the discourse of 1st grade middle school students’ mathematics class? The study methods to answer the study questions are as follows: First, self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and self-regulated learning ability in other subjects were measured and analyzed whether there exist meaningful differences(paired t-test), and also analyzed whether there exist differences by gender groups(paired t-test) and between gender groups(repeated measure analysis of variance) on 143 1st grade middle school students who attend the school where the researcher works. Second, a correlation analysis and a regression analysis were conducted, and also those were done by gender groups to analyze the relationship between 1st grade middle school students’ self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and 1st semester mathematics learning achievement level. Third, the discourse was recorded during the problem-solving process in the mathematics class through the 8 lessons on 89 students of 3 classes. Fourth, 15 students(2 students duplicated) were singled out according to their self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and their gender, and then their characteristics of sub-elements of self-regulated learning ability revealed in mathematics classroom discourse in 8 lessons were examined. The study results can be summarized as follows: First, 143 1st grade middle school students’ self-regulated mathematics learning ability is significantly lower than their self-regulated learning ability in other subjects. Second, there is a correlation coefficient between 143 1st grade middle school students’ self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and mathematics learning achievement level of 0.55, indicating a positive correlation. Third, there is a meaningful difference between gender groups as a result of the analysis of difference between 1st grade middle school students’ self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and self-regulated learning ability in other subjects by groups, and the verification of gender interaction with this analysis proves it, too. Fourth, gender difference exists between the 1st grade middle school students’ self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and mathematics learning achievement level. Fifth, there exist characteristics in sub-elements of self-regulated learning revealed in students’ discourse according to their gender and their self-regulated learning ability in mathematics. The following conclusions were driven from the study. First, when planning the mathematics class, it should be considered that the self-regulated learning ability is low due to its characteristic. Nevertheless, improving self-regulated learning ability in mathematics, which is lower than self-regulated learning ability in other subjects, needs to be focused on as a way of developing 1st grade middle school students’ affective domains of mathematics such as students’ interests and the awareness of usefulness. Second, goal-oriented attribution and meta-cognitive strategies need to be focused on as a way of improving 1st grade middle school students’ mathematics learning achievement level. It is because the same sub-elements, goal-oriented attribution and meta-cognitive strategies, were observed as meaningful sub-elements which affect 1st grade middle school students’ mathematics achievement level and in the discourse of those who have high self-regulated learning ability in mathematics. Third, the reason why there exist the gender differences in the comparison of self-regulated learning ability in mathematics and the one in other subjects is that female students apply more strict standards in their ability and attitudes in mathematics learning than male students. The gender gap between self-regulated learning ability and mathematics learning achievement level shows that factors which affect female students’ mathematics learning achievement level can be more complex than male students. Meta-cognitive strategies and goal-oriented attribution have a hugest influence on 1st grade middle school students’ mathematics learning achievement level. Their mathematics achievement level was higher when they look back their thinking process, make a general plan of their study, and then move on to the in-depth study, and when they regard understanding the process of problem-solving as important and love to challenge to the higher class task. It gives information about the attitude and strategies that students should have when they study mathematics. In addition, 1st grade middle school students showed gender differences in the self-regulated learning ability when they study mathematics and study other subjects. Therefore, in the context where male and female students study in the same class, mathematics teachers need to perceive these characteristics and give a class. Lastly, in this study, self-regulated learning ability and self-regulated learning ability in mathematics are measured separately, but the discourse data were gathered only in the mathematics class. Thus, in a follow-up study, students’ actual use of self-regulating sub-elements in mathematics class and in other subject classes can be analyzed by groups, a male group whose self-regulated learning ability and self-regulated learning ability in mathematics showed no meaningful difference and a female group who showed a significant one.
