The purpose of this study is to construct a theory that systematically and comprehensively explains the process and results of learners' abductive inquiry from outdoor geologic fieldwork education based on various learning elements and their relations. Authentic geological inquiry needs to be introduced and disseminated into education field to improve problems that have occurred due to the neglect of the nature of abductive inquiry and historical science in the current science education. On the basis of a design-based research approach, this study aims to design and implement the new learning strategies and analyze their teaching-learning process and results. The research questions are as follows. First, which learning elements constitute the performance process of abductive inquiry in outdoor geologic fieldwork education? Second, what are the characteristics of performance results from abductive inquiry in outdoor geologic fieldwork education? Third, how can the performance process and results of abductive inquiry in outdoor geologic fieldwork education be explained based on the relationships between the learning elements? In this study, a program titled ‘Let’s go on a Geo-tour: Finding the history of our land' was developed for students to experience authentic geologic inquiry through 15 in-classroom lessons (60 hours) and six outdoor geologic fieldwork classes (31 hours). And it was applied to nine students in 8-9th grades. This program was revised and supplemented after pilot study, and the researcher participated in the program as a designer as well as an instructor. The common learning procedures for three outdoor geologic fieldworks (a total of six lessons) were developed to repeatedly do the field and summary activities on the same sites, which allowed students not only to lead the abductive inquiry but also to experience the cognitive process of authentic geologic inquiry under the teacher’s guide. Each fieldwork was conducted in a various teaching-learning context where several learning elements with different characteristics, such as the design of class objectives and courses, learners’s cognitive level, teacher’s scaffolding, and the features of field site, were interacting each other. The first fieldwork was conducted at the beginning of the program, prior to explicit teaching-learning activities of geologic knowledge and inquiry. It was a preliminary fieldwork, and the site was Gwanaksan Valley in Seoul. The second and third fieldworks which happened after the explicit learning, were the main fieldwork conducted in the latter part of the program. The locations were the coast of Songdo Peninsula in Busan and Gyeokpo coast in Byunsan Peninsula in North Jeolla Province, respectively. The research data were collected in various ways from the learners, teacher and class observer. Main data analyzed deeply were video/audio recordings and students’ activity sheets collected during the outdoor geologic fieldwork. As supplementary data, students’ program applications, video/audio recordings and students’ activity sheets from classroom instruction, students’ field trip reports, various types of pre- and post- surveys, teacher’s and assistant teacher’s journals were also analyzed. Data analysis was based on the second generation grounded theory practice guidelines which emphasize creative and flexible data analysis. The results of this study were presented by comparing the students’ performance characteristics of abductive inquiry process (catching geologic clues, generating hypotheses of geological event, and evaluating hypotheses of geological event) shown in the preliminary and main fieldworks. During the preliminary fieldwork, students caught clues of low geological importance and used everyday experience and/or general scientific knowledge as a rule when asked to generate hypotheses about the origin of the clues. Also, students evaluated their hypotheses by the scientific accuracy of the rule or their own criterion. Meanwhile, during the main fieldwork, students frequently caught key clues in geologic perspectives and spontaneously generated geological event hypotheses related to the clues by borrowing the geologic knowledge (concept) as a rule. Furthermore, students scientifically evaluated their generated hypotheses based on the consistency of observations (evidence) and rules (science theory). The contents and the process of the in-class learning that were conducted between the preliminary and main fieldworks were also presented to further describe the differences of the performance characteristics in abductive inquiry between them. Through the in-class learning composed of nine and half lessons (a total of 33 hours) between preliminary and main fieldwork, students explicitly learned what the geologic inquiry is, including abductive reasoning as well as geologic knowledge. Based on the analysis of the empirical data, this study constructed an abstract theory on the process and results of learner’s performance during abductive inquiry in outdoor geologic fieldwork context. The main content of the outcome theory is ‘performance level of each abductive process'. Each identification criterion and the four steps of qualitative level corresponding to catching geologic clues, generating hypotheses of geological event, and evaluating hypotheses of geological event were presented. Part of the characteristics of the results of abductive performance that can not be explained as leveling perspective was conceptualized as 'independence of abductive performance' . In addition, the process theory was presented based on discovering learning elements, which were related to the results of these abductive performances, and building their relationship. Three main learning elements that consist of the performance process of abductive inquiry in geologic fieldwork education are the inquirer who is doing the inquiry, the site of geologic fieldwork as an inquiry subject and learning environment, and the teacher who designs and implements the teaching and learning. The inquirer element consists of sub-components, such as inquirer's ability for abductive inquiry and the attitude for doing inquiry. The site of geologic fieldwork element is composed of the attention to geologic clues, the abundance of geologic evidences, and the physical learning environment. The teacher element consists of the design of the geologic fieldwork, the instruction on the geologic fieldwork, and the design and instruction of the in-class learning before the geologic fieldwork. The results of abductive inquiry performance in geologic fieldwork are influenced by the interaction between the inquirer and the geologic fieldwork site in various aspects. The teacher not only interacts with the inquirer and the geologic fieldwork site, but also affects interaction between the two. Through the theory constructed in this study, the results of ‘Let’s go on a Geo-tour’ program can be described as follows. In the main fieldwork, ‘performance level of each abductive process’ was higher than the preliminary fieldwork, because the overall ‘inquirer's ability for abductive performance’ was improved. On the other hand, the difference in 'independence of abductive performance' in two main fieldworks are largely influenced by the fact that ‘openness of geologic inquiry’ were designed differently. Other differences in characteristics of individual student’s abductive performance can be contextually explained based on the difference of various learning (sub-)elements. This study firstly theorized the process and results of abductive inquiry in outdoor geologic fieldwork education, which has significance in that it provides the foundation to disseminate authentic geology inquiry. In conclusion, some instructional implications are proposed such as designing and implementing geologic fieldwork education considering the various learning elements presented in the process theory, especially the ‘attention to geologic clues' and diagnosing the level of learners based on the outcome theory. Follow-up studies on the practical and specific method for introducing abductive inquiry-based outdoor geologic fieldwork education into school settings, and elaborating or generalizing the theory on abductive inquiry performance in geologic fieldwork are required.;본 연구의 목적은 야외 지질 답사 교육에서 나타나는 학습자의 귀추적 탐구 수행 과정과 결과를 다양한 학습 요소 및 그들 간 관계를 바탕으로 체계적·종합적으로 설명하는 이론을 구성하는 것이다.
