현대소설을 통한 시민성 교육 방안 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 현대소설교육에서의 시민성 교육의 현황을 살펴보고 민주주의 사회에서 시민성 교육의 필요성에 주목하여 현대소설을 통한 시민성 교육 방안을 모색하는 데에 있다. 시민성 교육은 우리나라 교육기본법에서 교육의 목표로 설정되어 있다. 교육과정 총론에서도 교육의 시민 양성이라는 목표를 재확인하는 만큼, 우리나라 교육에서 시민성 교육은 중요한 목표이다. 이에 현행 교육과정에서는 민주 시민 교육을 범교과 주제로 설정하여 전 교과의 영역에서 시민성 교육에 관심을 가질 것을 강조하고 있다. 이러한 시민성 교육의 중요성에 의해 현행 현대소설교육도 시민성 교육에 주목할 필요가 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 시민성 교육이 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지 그 양상을 살펴보고, 현대소설을 통한 시민성 교육의 필요성을 확인하여, 현대소설을 통한 시민성 교육의 목표와 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 본 연구를 진행하기 위해 먼저 현대사회의 시민성 개념에 대하여 살펴보았다. 시민성이란 시민의 자질, 태도, 역량을 의미하는 것이기에 시민의 개념과 밀접한 관계가 있다. 시민의 개념은 역사적 변천을 겪었으며 그에 따라 요구되는 시민성도 달라졌다. 따라서 시민성 교육을 논하기 위해서는 시민의 개념과 지위의 역사적 변천을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 시민의 역사적 변천과 이에 따른 시민성의 변천을 살피는 작업을 통해 현대사회에서 요구하는 시민성을 확인하였다. 또한, 이를 바탕으로 시민성 교육의 중요성을 재확인하였다. 한편, 우리나라 교육기본법과 교육과정 총론에서 시민성 교육의 중요성을 강조한 만큼 국어교육과정에서도 시민성 교육의 필요성을 암시하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 현대의 민주주의에서 요구되는 시민성에 대한 논의는 다양하지만, 대체적으로 자유롭고 주체적인 시민, 다양성을 추구하고 타인을 존중하는 시민, 사회에 적극적으로 참여하는 시민이라는 점에는 동의한다. 이것을 현대소설교육에서 다룰 내용으로 재구성하면 비판적·성찰적 시민 역량, 다원적 시민 역량, 참여적 시민 역량으로 재구성할 수 있다. 이 역량들을 현대소설을 통하여 교육하는 것은 지식적 차원에서가 아닌 가치와 태도의 차원에서 이루어진다는 의의가 있다. 문학의 현실 반영, 사회에 대한 문학의 비판적 시각, 문학적 상상력이라는 현대소설 장르의 특성과 타자 이해, 자아 성찰, 공동체 의식 등 현대소설교육의 목표가 시민성과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있었다. 따라서 이러한 특성들이 현대소설을 통한 시민성 교육의 내용이자 의의가 될 수 있다는 것을 밝혔다. 현대소설교육은 시민성 교육과 이미 많은 부분에서 연결될 수 있는 지점이 있다. 이러한 지점들을 현행 현대소설교육의 교육과정을 분석하는 것을 통해 살펴보았다. 현행 현대소설교육은 시민성 교육을 교육 목표로서 전면에 내세우고 있지 않다. 하지만 교육과정과 교과서 구현 양상에서 시민성 교육과 연결될 수 있는 부분을 확인할 수 있었다. 문학교육의 세부 교육 목표 중 ‘작중 인물의 갈등 이해’, ‘작품의 사회·문화·역사적 맥락 이해’, ‘타자 이해’, ‘자아 성찰’, ‘공동체 의식’과 관련된 내용은 시민성 교육과 밀접하게 연관되어 있었다. 그러나 시민성 교육이 문학교육의 핵심 목표가 아니기에 현대소설을 통한 시민성 교육으로서 한계도 존재하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 현대소설교육을 통한 시민성 교육 방안을 모색하였다. 먼저 현대소설을 통한 시민성 교육의 목표를 제시하였다. 시민성의 핵심적 역량을 바탕으로 소설 교육 차원에서의 시민성 교육 목표를 재구성하였다. 이후 교육 목표 달성을 위한 교육 방안을 모색하였다. 이 과정에서 소설의 속성과 소설 교육의 장점을 살려 개발하는 것에 유의하였다. 이 연구는 민주주의 사회에서 시민성 교육의 중요성을 포착하고, 현대소설교육의 영역에서 현대소설을 통한 시민성 교육의 필요성과 방안에 대하여 연구하였다는 데에 의의가 있다. 시민성은 특정 교과에 한정되어 다루거나, 지식적 차원에서만 교육한다고 함양되는 것이 아니다. 전 교과에 걸쳐서 학습자의 지식과 태도와 가치의 영역에서 교수·학습 되어야 한다. 이에 현대소설교육에서도 시민성 교육에 무게를 둔 연구가 활발히 이루어져야 한다. 이 논문이 이후 이루어질 현대소설교육에서의 시민성 교육의 활발한 연구의 기점이 되기를 기대한다.;The purpose of this paper is examining present situation of citizenship education in contemporary novel education and seeking method of citizenship education through contemporary novel education as focusing on the necessity of citizenship education in democratic society. The citizenship education is essential objective in our education because it is set as education goal in education laws and the goal that is training citizens of education is reconfirmed in general outline of curriculum. It is emphasized to have interest in citizenship education through setting democratic citizen education as cross-curricular subject in present curriculum as well. Thus examining aspect of citizenship education in the present contemporary novel education and confirming necessity of citizenship education through contemporary novel, then setting the objective for proposing goal and method of citizenship education through contemporary novel. For this study, this paper starts to examine the citizenship in contemporary society first. Citizenship has close relationship with concept of citizen because citizenship means qualification, attitude and capability. The concept of citizen has historically undergone changes and required citizenship has changed. Therefore it is required to examine the historical change of concept and position of citizenship. The citizenship required in contemporary society is confirmed through examining change of citizenship according to historical change of citizen. Significance of citizenship education is checked too based on the above examination. On the other hand, necessity of citizenship education can be confirmed in education of Korean language as significance of citizenship education is emphasized in education law and general outline of curriculum. Although discussion of required citizenship in contemporary democracy varies but it is generally agreed that citizen is free and independent, seeking and respecting diversity and participating actively in society. If we reconstruct the above as contents those will be handled in novel education, it can be reconstructed as critical, reflective, plural and participating capability of citizen. Educating the above capability in contemporary novel has meaning because it is educated in a dimension of value and attitude not intellectual. Citizenship has close relationship with characteristic of novel genre like reality reflection in literature, critical thinking of society and literary imagination and objective of novel education like understanding other people, self-reflection, understanding of community culture, experiencing something as if experiencing it themselves through literature and so on. Thus these properties can be the contents and meaning of citizenship education through contemporary novel. Education of contemporary novel can already be connected with citizenship education in many aspects. These points have been examined by present course of contemporary novel education. Present contemporary novel education does not set citizenship education as education objective at the forefront. However, relation point with citizenship education is confirmed in the curriculum and aspect of materializing textbook. Citizenship education has close relationship with the followings those are 'understanding conflict between characters', 'understanding social, cultural and historical context of literature', 'understanding others', 'self-reflection' and 'community spirit' among detail education goals. However, citizenship education is not key goal of literature education, so there is limitation in citizenship education through contemporary novel. The method of citizenship education through contemporary novel education has been sought based on this study result. Firstly, purpose of citizenship education through contemporary novel is proposed. Essential capability of citizenship has been reconstructed in a dimension of novel education. After that, direction and method for achieving educational objective has been sought. In this process, It was taken note to develop by strengthening advantages of property of novel and novel education. it was considered to expand width of experience and thinking of learners, that inevitably has limitation, by citizenship education through contemporary novel. This study has significance that seizing the importance of citizenship education in democratic society and studying necessity and method of citizenship education through contemporary novel education in a dimension of novel education. Citizenship is not cultivated by education in specific subject nor in only intellectual dimension. It should be learned in area of learner’s knowledge, attitude and value through all academic subjects. Thus, the study focused on citizenship education should be conducted vigorously. it is expected that this paper could be starting point of vigorous study of citizenship education in contemporary novel education that will be conducted after.
