Abstract
This thesis analyzes the elements of the body used as the subject of the researcher’s works from 2012 to 2017 along with the ways of using these elements, and explores what the researcher’s works ultimately convey. Conducting projects using the body, the researcher has consistently tried to explain the series of works in terms of human relationship. This intent has developed into a series of queries: ‘Perhaps an existence before my eyes called a human being with a sole body was created through various relationships it had inevitably experienced over the course of time until it could exist as a human being at the point called present. If that is the case, even as my appearance is presented as a single body, perhaps that body is made up of a combination of relations among a large number of invisible others and situations.’ These queries after all were questions on ‘Who I am.’ In other words, they were questions on the self. Along with arts practice of dismantling and reconstructing the body and mixing it with abstract spaces, these queries serve as an important framework for the researcher’s entire body of work. The self the researcher wanted to express is the self which is comprised of many relationships a person with one body has formed with other people. This self signifies ‘I’, that is, the main agent of existence, who lives in the present world or exists in the point of time and time frame called present. Therefore, the researcher reviewed the works created in the past five years and made an in-depth reflection on their themes from the viewpoint of the existential self, according to which the essence of human beings is not reason but the unicity held by individual human being.     Previous studies on the self were reviewed to establish a theoretical framework for discussing the researcher’s artworks. According to Heidegger’s view of the self among existentialism standpoints, temporality is a constitutional principle of the self, which lives as an inauthentic self because of a certain tendency inherent in human beings as In-der-Welt-sein, that is, the universal tendency of human beings, as sein who cannot help but depend on other human beings and seiendes, to interpret themselves from seiendes. It is through the fundamental feeling of anxiety that the self attains the possibility of Dasein of the authentic self. Although Heidegger's existential self is consequently based on the body, there is no reference to the body in his work. Therefore, while adopting Heidegger’s notion of In-der-Welt-sein to discuss the researcher’s artworks, the ideas of Merleau-Ponty, who explains the existential structure of Heidegger’s existential self with the notion of the body, is used to supplement the explication of the artworks. In addition, past literatures and paintings were reviewed to examine how the body has been covered in art. In the process of presenting the works which transforms the body by type through various examples, the concept of ‘the body of hybridity’ was drawn for the analysis of the overall body of work. Since the self assumes the appearance of a respondent as a multifaceted and multilayered being, the researcher’s body embodying this characteristic of the self was named as ‘Corps Hybrid.’ Unlike the hybrid body that has been constructed historically, the hybrid body newly proposed with the researcher’s definition not only assumes a hybrid form in appearance, but also contains the self which is formed through complex relationships on the level of time. In other words, the inner side of the hybrid body also assumes hybridity as its unicity. The association with existentialism was also discovered in the abstract expression of stain, which is an important element in the researcher’s work. The abstract expression, hence, was explained in three categories of space; a psychological space, a space that sets the situation of the self, and a space of the extended expression of the body. Consequently, it was found that the researcher’s work is in contact with the moment of disclosing ‘the possibility of existence of the authentic self’ expounded in existentialism, and that overarching theme expressed through the work is the relationship-assembled self which is grounded in time.
