Abstract
Students tend to comprehend the mathematical concepts in their preferred ways of thinking(Ferri, 2015). Teachers should make decisions on the methods of delivering mathematical information through the use of various representations, in consideration of each student’s distinct mathematical thinking styles, to improve the efficiency of the students’ learning. The mathematics textbooks also have to take the students’ thinking styles into account. The mathematics textbooks consist of textual elements, as in the letters or mathematical signs, and non-textual elements, such as images or graphs (R. Kim, 2009). Visual images, including non-textual elements suggest a concise view of various information, and put emphases on the core contents (Levin & Mayer, 1993), so these tools are useful for the students to intuitively understand the mathematical concepts and make gradual formalization (K. Moon, J. Woo, 1999). Also, although these non-textual elements are significantly important that they help students establish concept images with respect to the concept of learning (B. Lee, 2011), the area of non-textual elements still remain without enough understanding. Thus, this study has established the following research problems to emphasize the importance of non-textual elements, and the necessity of researching on the non-textual elements. 1. What are the characteristics of the non-textual elements, that are used in each textbook, each small chapter (concept of function, graphs of function, applications of function), and each type in the ‘function’ chapter of the 2009-revised mathematics textbook for middle school 1st graders, in terms of accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality? 2. What are the characteristics of the non-textual elements, that are used to describe the concept of function in the ‘function’ chapter of the 2009-revised mathematics textbook for middle school 1st graders, in terms of accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality? In this study, we classified the non-literal symbols into six categories: figures, vertical lines, coordinate planes, images, cartoons, and photographs, and evaluated each item to get 2, 1, and 0 points in consideration of the three aspects: accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality(B. Lee, 2011). The average scores of each aspect were calculated by each type, and the scores were used to make an analysis on the accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality of non-textual elements, by the textbook, by small chapter, and by type. Five types of textbooks were randomly selected among the total 13 textbooks for the reliability analysis. Two graduate school students in mathematical education, and the researcher coded the five textbooks, and the results were cross-analyzed using the SPSS 23 program. The kappa coefficients were derived from the five textbooks, and the average kappa coefficients were .851, .825, .786 for accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality, respectively. Regarding the first research problem, the average scores of accuracy and connectivity were high, whereas the contextuality score was lower in the mathematical representations used in 13 mathematics textbooks. In terms of pictorial representations, it was found that the average scores of accuracy and connectivity were low, but the contextuality scores were high. The average accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality scores of mathematical representations were not significantly different by the textbook, by small chapter, or by type, but the scores of those factors in terms of the textbook, small chapter, and type in the pictorial representations showed a significant difference. The results from the second research problem showed that there was a difference in the models used to explain the concept of function in each textbook, and also there were differences in accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality of the non-textual elements that are used to describe the same mathematical concept. The study suggested the following results and implications. Given that the non-textual elements used in mathematical textbooks could be used as the “tools for thinking” (Cuoco, 2001), unlike the visual representations used in other subjects, the accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality of non-textual elements should be regarded more importantly(R. Kim, 2009), in consideration of the characteristics of mathematical education. Considering the students’ mathematical thinking styles and learning opportunities, the authors who write textbooks and the publishers should recognize the importance of non-textual elements, and make much effort in regarding the accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality. The teachers also have to establish a clear standard for accuracy, connectivity, and contextuality of non-textual elements to be able to suggest proper non-textual elements to the students for their efficient learning.;학생들은 저마다 선호하는 사고방식에 따라 수학적 개념을 이해한다(Ferri, 2015).
