개인 미술치료 사례 연구에 나타난 치료사의 그림에 대한 접근 분석

Abstract

미술치료에서의 그림은 정보 전달과 정보 획득 기능의 매개체로서 그 중요성을 가진다. 미술치료가 치료사, 내담자, 그리고 작업결과물을 구성요소로 가진다고 규정하는 관점에 따르면 이들 사이의 삼원적 구조에서 발생하는 ‘미술치료에서의 치료적 관계 유형’을 이해함으로써 긍정적 치료적 관계를 증진할 수 있다. 미술치료에서의 치료적 관계 유형은 ‘치료사와 내담자’, ‘치료사와 작업결과물’ 그리고 ‘치료사와 작업행위’로 구분되는데 특히, 미술치료의 특성을 좌우하는 ‘치료사와 내담자의 작업결과물 간 관계’에서 미술치료사가 내담자의 그림을 수용하는 관점을 살펴보는 것은 궁극적으로 미술치료의 진행과 치료의 효과성을 확인하고 이해하기 위해 필수적인 항목이라고 말할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 미술치료의 효과적 측면을 논하기 위해 개인 미술치료 사례에 실린 내담자 그림에 치료사가 어떻게 접근하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 연구의 분석 자료로 American Art Therapy Association의 학술지 『Art Therapy』중 2005년부터 2015년 10월 사이에 발행된 권/호에 실린 논문을 사용하였고, 총 259개의 논문 중에서 개인 미술치료 사례를 다루며 전체 회기가 제시되어 있고, 비지시적으로 진행된 2차원 작업결과물을 게재한 논문 중 두 개의 사례에 나타난 치료사의 그림 접근 유형을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 치료를 목적으로 진행된 사례에 대하여 서술한 논문은 40편으로 약 15%에 불과하였다. 각 사례에서 치료사는 그림 접근 시 핵심 수용 요소로 시각적 요소를 사용함을 알 수 있었다. 치료사의 그림에 대한 서술 유형으로는 그림 중심 서술, 내담자 중심 서술, 작업 과정 중심 서술을 모두 관찰할 수 있었으나 각 서술 유형이 논문에서 차지하는 비중은 사례에 따라 차이가 있었다. 내담자의 진술에 근거한 정보 전달, 작업 과정에 대한 설명에 비하여 치료사의 그림 자체에 대한 접근은 미비하였다. 사례에 나타난 치료사의 그림 접근 태도에서 두 사례 모두 미술치료에 인본주의적 관점을 치료에서 차용하고 있다고 유추할 수 있었으나, 그림에 대한 치료사의 접근에는 치료사가 어떤 심리학적 이론과 관점을 바탕으로 미술치료를 진행하였는지 명확히 드러나지 않았다. 결과적으로 본 연구에서 살펴본 두 사례 모두 미술치료의 효과를 입증할 수 있는 성공적인 사례였음은 분명하지만, 개인 미술치료사례에서 내담자가 완성한 다양한 작품에 대한 치료사의 명확한 수용 자세를 분석하고 이론적 토대를 파악하는 것은 어려웠다. 그러나 다양한 관점과 측면에서 내담자의 그림에서 인지할 수 있는 시각적 요소, 내담자의 그림에 대한 느낌과 진술 그리고 회기 중 치료사가 내담자와 나누었던 대화 내용을 토대로 그림에 접근하고 이를 수용한다는 점을 공통적으로 발견할 수 있었다. 이는 궁극적으로 어떤 특정한 이론이나 경직된 관점에서 벗어나 다양한 관점과 주제 및 해석 요소를 토대로 내담자의 그림에 접근하고 이해할 필요성을 간접적으로 시사한다는 점에서 본 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.;Pictures in art therapy is an important vehicle of delivering and achieving information. According to the point of view that sees the art therapy as a construct of three elements of a therapist, a client, and artworks, understanding the therapeutic relationship as a construct of the triadic structure of those three elements can expedite a positive therapeutic relationship. There are three therapeutic relation types in art therapy, one is the relationship between the therapist and the client, another is the relationship between the therapist and the artworks, and the other is the relationship between the therapist and the work itself. Among these three therapeutic relations, this paper focuses on the relationship between the therapist and the artworks by investigating how the therapist accepts the client’s pictures as one of the essential method to understand the process and the effectiveness of the art therapy. In order to discuss the effectiveness of the art therapy, we explore how the therapist approach to pictures of individual art therapy cases. We analyze the approaches of the therapists to the pictures in two individual cases. To select those cases, we screened papers on the journal of 『Art Therapy』 from 2005 to 2015 Oct, published by American Art Therapy Association. Among the total 259 papers, we selected papers which is subject to individuals, containing the whole session information, and presenting two dimensional artworks as photos, as a results of a nondirective method. The number of papers that qualified our criteria was 40, 15% of the total papers published. In each cases, we find that approaching using visual elements was the major approaching method of the therapists to the pictures. All three types of descriptive method which are picture focused description, client focused description, and the art making process focused description was found however, the proportion of each description types used in each paper were different. Comparing to the vast amount of explanation based on the client statement and the artwork process, the approach from the therapist to the picture itself was hardly found. We could infer that the therapists adopted humanistic approach to clients in his/her approach to the picture in both of the cases. However, it was unclear which psychological theory and approach that the therapist adopted in his/her art therapy sessions. There is no doubt that the two cases we analyzed in this paper are good examples to show the effectiveness of art therapy. On the other hand, the limitation of this study is that it was unclear to define what attitude the therapist adopted in approaching the pictures of the client and therefore more case study would be needed in order to suggest a theoretical model on the approaches of the therapists. Regardless of the limitation, we could find that the therapists approach and adopt information based on visual elements that he/she perceives from the pictures, client‘s self description on his/her own pictures, and the conversation that the therapist had with the client during the therapy sessions, in common. Our main finding suggests that it is important to adopt various approaches in order to understand the meaning of picture, rather than persist in one certain approach to interpret the picture.
