Abstract
The purpose of gifted education and talented development in young students is to maximize their potential and capacity to achieve self-realization on a personal level and to contribute to increased national competitiveness and progress in human civilization on a national level. nterestingly, there has been recent interests on gifted and talented education of young students who can contribute to social benefits as social capital rather than self-realization. From this perspective,, interest in the fostering of the gifted and talented as a social capital contributing to social progress (Renzulli, 2012) has grown, increased to more studies on education for a well-rounded young talent. However, such character education are often replaced with classes on ethics or on-site visits and hands-on experiences, leading to a lack of curricula connected with the topic in question. Therefore, this study seeks to develop a curriculum for character development through specialized math education, thereby contributing to the goal of fostering young talent as social capital. The purpose of this study is to develop elementary school math classes for the gifted and talented with a focus on social issues to investigate the possibility of character education through specialized subject classes. As suggested in the goals of the math education for social justice, which provide the fundamental theoretical basis, through mathematics activities with a theme of social issues, mathematically gifted and talented young students can critically perceive social issues, express a sense of mathematical and critical agency throughout the course and develop a willingness and mindset to contribute to social progress. In particular, the concept of Figured Worlds and agency is applied to this study to explain the concept of elementary math classes for the gifted and talented with a focus on social issues. The concept is also used as the theoretical framework for the design and analysis of the curriculum. Figured Worlds is defined as the actual world composed of social and cultural elements (Holland et al., 1998) and can be described as the framework used by the individual or the social structure to perceive and interpret their surroundings. Agency refers to the power of practice that allows one to perceive the potential for change within the Figured Worlds that he is a part of and to change the existing Figured Worlds. This study sees as its purpose the fostering of young talent that has the agency to critically perceive the social structure or Figured Worlds through math classes with a theme of social issues, and thus become a social capital that can contribute to social progress. The following study questions guided my inquiry in order to suggest the possibility of practical application through elementary math class for the gifted and talented with a focus on social issues as mentioned above. Study question 1. What are the components or appropriate class model for elementary math classes for the gifted and talented with a focus on social issues? Study question 2. What effect does elementary math classes for the gifted and talented with a focus on social issues have on the students’ leadership, social responsibility, awareness of social contribution, critical thinking skills and mathematical thinking? Study question 3. What are the characteristics of young talents in math during the application of elementary math classes with a focus on social issues? In order to resolve the above study questions, in Chapter 2, preceding studies on Figure Worlds and math education for social justice, which serve as the theoretical basis for this study, were reviewed to conceptualize elementary math education for the gifted and talented with a focus on social issues. Based on this review, in Chapter 3, a del phi analysis was conducted to conclude a consensus on the education goals, contents, methodology and evaluation in elementary math education for young talents. In doing so, a model for instruction and class design are configured. Then two experts who are currently instructing gifted students and a program theme for elementary math class for the gifted with a focus on social issues were selected to develop a curriculum on 4 themes. The developed program was applied to students of young math talent center in Chapter 4 and its results analyzed to verify the effectiveness of the program. Evaluation on the effectiveness was done qualitatively and quantitatively, from which the potential for character education through elementary math classes for the gifted with a focus on social issues is suggested. The findings for each study question are as follows. The results of showed that the following components could categoried into four: Goals, theme and contents, instruction method and evaluation. For goals, perception and resolution of social issues through critical thinking skills, development of an awareness for social contribution, development of responsibility for social issues and leadership that contributes to social progress were concluded. In terms of theme and contents, contents on social injustice, on equality and public good, consideration for those on the social margins and highly sensitive topics that take into consideration students’ interest and attention were identified. For instruction methods, a comprehensive education model, and for class strategy discussion and debates as well as collaborative learning were concluded. For evaluation, a multi-faceted evaluation was agreed upon. Based on the elements thus extracted, a class design model and instruction and learning course model were developed. Four themes to be applied to actual classes were also selected to develop the program. The class design model was established by using backward design and the KDB model by Drake which is a comprehensive curriculum that moves away from textbooks. This model was used as the basis for adopting math education for social justice and the Figured Worlds theory. The instruction model is one that is applied to the curriculum for planning the class. It provides the flow of the class in four stages, from recognition of the issue, investigation of the issue, research of the issue and expansion of the issue. Elementary math classes for the gifted with a focus on social issues brouhgt the themes from social issues that were familiar to the students in the four categories of politics, economy, society and culture, with one topic developed for each category. In the political field the topic of fair and just decision-making was addressed, while in the economy section the concept of welfare through circulation of money in capitalism was covered. In the category of society, child labor abuse and other human rights issues were discussed, while in the category of culture, the themes of proper formation and consumption of knowledge were addressed. After verification of the validity of the program by experts, the program was completed. A verification of the effectiveness of the class through quantitative evaluation as in showed that vision, task responsibility and promotion had high explanatory power in individual characteristics, while responsible attitudes and implementation of responsibility had high explanatory power in the category of social responsibility. In critical thinking, making arguments and perception of bias had a high explanatory power, while in terms of change in mathematical tendencies, the social value of mathematics had the highest explanatory power. A covariance analysis on the before and after test results for awareness of social contribution showed that there was significant difference across three groups. To verify the effectiveness of the class, 60 students from the elementary young math talent Center were used as the experiment group and 49 sixth grade students at regular schools were selected as the control group to conduct a before and after study on heterogeneous control groups. Data was analyzed using MANCOVA for leadership, social responsibility, critical thinking tendencies and skills as well as mathematical tendencies, while co-variance analysis was used for awareness of social contribution. The effectiveness of the class as in was verified using in-depth interviews and observation of classes. First, an analysis of in-depth interviews of students, parents and teaching assistants showed that students’ interest in math had been stimulated through elementary math classes for the gifted with a focus on social issues, allowing them to apply math skills in daily life. Moreover, they came to recognize critically social issues and view social phenomena through mathematics and became aware that society can be changed through mathematics. An analysis of the class showed the following. First, the critical social recognition by students saw change. They showed a willingness to exercise mathematical agency and resist against existing Figured Worlds to seek change. During this process, students felt they were able to resolve through math problems they encountered in daily life. Issues of social injustice included in the assignments were enough to stimulate interest by students and served as a motivating force for students to proactively resolve such issues. Moreover, their social responsibility, awareness of social contribution and leadership could be seen as having improved. Based on these findings, the following implications can be stated. First, this study suggested a curriculum that investigated social issues through math. This is meaningful in that it applied the concept of comprehensive education with a focus on mathematics that moves away from textbooks. Furthermore, Students saw their thinking patterns and critical thinking skills improved through the process of viewing social issues from a critical perspective. students came to recognize the need for a just and fair society while working on math problems with a focus on social issues. At the same time, they were able to develop altruistic leadership, social responsibility and awareness of social contribution. Moreover, they came to recognize the practical value of mathematics during the process of resolving social issues through mathematics. Through these results, it is confirmed that character education is possible through such math curriculum. Finally, students not only understood social issues in their community, but showed a willingness to act on the issues to make their community a better place. This result shows that the goal of education for the gifted and talented to contribute to the fostering of human resources needed for national and social progress can be met. Based on the findings of this study and the discussion as above, the following is suggested. First, A curriculum that goes beyond using math as a tool to incorporate it into the content is needed. In this study, mathematics was used to investigate social issues in the developed curriculum. But this concept should be expanded to develop a more in-depth program for advanced mathematics education. Second, There is a need to adjust the program to better cater to different levels of students and regions . Given the characteristics of programs that focus on social issues, the socio-economic background of the student and his or her local community must be taken into account when a program is developed. Since the program developed for this study is for young talent, adjustments are further needed for it to be applied to regular classrooms. Third, The study and research infrastructure needs to be reinforced and expanded for math education for social justice to be applied in practice. Given the traits of the study that focuses on social injustice and critical issues, there are naturally limits to which such a program can be applied in public education where neutrality is emphasized. To complement this, studies on practice from various perspectives, trainings for instructors and more in-depth studies are suggested. Fourth, critical ethnography study in a classroom is suggested as a follow-up study. This study was focused on verifying the effectiveness of the overall program catered to all students, and thus has a limit in closely analyzing the evolution in each individual student. As such critical ethnography studies are recommended for a more microscopic analysis of how the classroom culture and students change.;영재교육의 목적은 영재들의 뛰어난 잠재력을 최대한으로 계발하여 자아실현의 목표에 도달하도록 하는 개인적 차원과 국가 경쟁력 향상 및 세계 인류 문명의 발전에 기여하는 국가적인 차원으로 제시된다.
