Abstract
Washout effect of precipitation on surface major air pollutants (O3, CO, NO2, SO2, PM10) over South Korea in summer and winter during 2002-2013 has been examined by analyzing the correlation between hourly data of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) precipitation of Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) and pollutants of Ministry of Environment of Korea (MEK). Washout effect (i.e., the significant negative correlation between precipitation intensity and pollutant concentration) has been analyzed, based on the following conditions: ⅰ) Seasons (summer, winter) or two types of rainfall (convective, stratiform), ⅱ) Spatial grid boxes (0.25° × 0.25, 0.1° × 0.1°), ⅲ) Levels of significance (p < 0.05, 0.01), ⅳ) Different time scale inputs in correlation calculation (monthly average or hourly observation), and ⅴ) Frequency distributions (initial observation, its log-transformed value). In the correlation between hourly observations of precipitation and pollutants during summer of convective rain, the washout effects on the pollutants are as follows: PM10 > SO2 > NO2 > CO > O3. In winter when stratiform rain was dominant, the washout effects were SO2 > PM10 > CO > O3 > NO2. This orders were relatively noticeable in denser spatial grid (0.1° × 0.1°), high level of significance (p < 0.01) and log-transformed frequency distribution. This tendency was not clearly shown in the correlation between monthly averages of hourly observations of precipitation and pollutant. The washout effect on NO2 in winter when the precipitation is about one tenth compared to the one in the summer is almost negligible maybe due to the NO2 transportaion from northeast China to South Korea the effect of transportation.
