Abstract
This study began with the purpose to find the methods to make middle school students enjoy mathematics more. For this, the classes on the connectivity outside mathematics were selected as the topic for the study. However, the results from the classes on the connectivity outside mathematics may vary depending on the interests of the individual students. Therefore, this study made the premise that the influences of the classes on mathematical connectivity may be shown differently according to the learners’ personal interests on the targets of connection. This study established music as the target of connectivity outside mathematics. The topics for the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music were ‘number and operation’ and ‘Pythagorean scale’. Then, the points whether the classes reached the accomplishment standard of the content system required in the current mathematical curriculum and whether the students felt the interests on mathematic were checked at the same time by the researcher. Based on the identified findings, the researcher determined that ‘the students delightfully learned mathematics”. The aim of this study was to identify the cases in which the results about the learning ‘definitions’, ‘problem solving’ and ‘the interest on mathematics’ varied when the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music were conducted for the middle school students whose accomplishment degrees were low. The questions settled for the study were as follows. Question 1. Do the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music targeting the students with lower accomplishment influence on the students’ learning about ‘definitions’ and ‘problem solving’? 1-1. Do the personal interests on music influence on the learning about the definition of whole number and rational number conducted in the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music? 1-2. Are there differences found in ‘problem solving’ regarding general number and operation as well as the combination of two? Can it be said that they are influenced by the personal interests? Question 2. Do the classes on the connectivity outside mathematics also influence on ‘the interests on mathematics’ due to the personal interests on the target of connection? The researcher designated the classes after investing the existing studies on the mathematical connectivity, number and operation, and Pythagorean scale in order to explore the questions of this study stated above. As the results of conducting pilot study for middle school students with the designed classes, the researcher was able to find several problems. Thus, the researcher re-designated the classes for this study procedure by revising the found problems. Consequently, the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music were performed targeting middle school students, and the materials to solve the study questions were collected. The participants in this study were total 10 of middle school students. The classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music utilized for this study were comprised of total 4 times, and each time spent one hour. All the classes was conducted as one-to-one classes between the participants of the study and the researcher. In the first class, wiring consent form for this study, operating pre-survey, measuring pre-test on mathematical interests, operating semi-structured interview on mathematics and music was performed. In the second class, the learning through videos and texts was conducted. Guitar was utilized as the instrument for the class in the second class. In the third class, the class for solving the mathematical problems using the activity sheets based on the learnt content in the second classes was performed. In the fourth class, operating post-survey, measuring post-test on mathematical interests, operating semi-structured interview on the classes was performed. The analyzed findings according to the viewpoints from the study questions collected in such process were as follows. In terms of the study question 1-1, the results were deduced by comparing the problem solving in pre-test and post survey. The students who were interested in music and the students who were not interested in music showed differences in learning ‘the definitions’ of whole number and rational number. It can be interpreted as the results derived from the differences on how they concentrated in the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music. Therefore, it was found that the personal interests influenced on the learning regarding ‘the definitions’ on whole number and rational number conducted in the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music. In terms of the study question 1-2, the question in which general number and operation was both combined could be defined as follows. The question on general number and operation is the question on number and operation appeared in the revised textbook for the first grader in the middle school in 2009, and the combined question on number and operation was seen as the question to link constant ratio utilized in the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music with the mentioned questions on general number and operation. In this study procedure, the learning for problem solving regarding general number and operation was not conducted directly. According to the analysis on pre-survey and post-survey in order to explore the study question 1-2, the participating middle school students did not showed the differences in problem solving regarding general number and operation depending on the interests in music, however, the students with the interests in music showed positive differences regarding the combined question on number and operation. Based on such findings, the researcher concluded that there were differences in ‘problem solving’ between general number and operation and the combination of two, and they were influenced by the personal interests. In terms of the study question 2, the researcher concluded that the classes on the connectivity between mathematics and music also influences on ‘the interests on mathematics’ due to the personal interests in music through the analysis on pre-test and post-test on the mathematical interests and transcribed database. The results of this study imply that the classes on the connectivity outside mathematics are useful when the interesting targets of learners and mathematics are interconnected. In other words, the classes in which the interesting targets of learners and mathematics are linked can cause affirmative learning effects.
