내용분석을 통한 국내 탐사보도 기사 연구

Abstract

최근 다양한 매체의 등장으로 언론의 역할과 기능이 확장되고 있다. 동시에 더 눈에 띄는 뉴스를, 더 빠르게 전달하기 위한 언론사 간의 경쟁도 심화되고 있다. 이러한 변화는 정보의 질적 수준 하락으로 이어지며 언론에 대한 대중의 신뢰도를 떨어뜨리는 결과를 가져왔다. 결국 전체적으로 저널리즘의 위기가 진행되며 언론에서 생산하는 뉴스의 질적 수준 향상이 필요하다는 목소리가 높아지고 있다. 이와 같은 상황에서 언론이 어떠한 방식으로 뉴스를 생산해 내는지 알아보는 것은 매우 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 뉴스의 질적 수준은 결국 언론이 뉴스를 생산하기 위해 어떠한 과정을 거치는가에 따라 결정되기 때문이다. 언론 연구의 한 영역으로 언론의 뉴스생산방식 연구가 지속적으로 이어져 온 이유이기도 하다. 본 연구는 이러한 저널리즘 위기 상황을 바탕으로 탐사보도의 심층뉴스생산 방식을 기사 내 취재보도활동 요소 분석을 통해 탐색했다. 현재 저널리즘에 닥친 위기 극복 대안으로 제시되고 있는 탐사보도의 심층뉴스생산 기능이 제대로 실현되고 있는지 확인하고자 했다. 본 연구의 목적은 탐사보도의 심층뉴스생산 기능이 어떠한 방식으로 실천되고 있는지 확인하고, 탐사보도가 저널리즘의 위기를 극복할 대안으로 가능성이 있는지 검증하는데 있다. 탐사보도의 심층뉴스생산 기능을 취재보도활동으로 개념화하고, 탐사보도 취재보도활동에서 특징으로 부각된 폭넓은 대상, 기자의 주도성, 사회 개혁적 성격 요소들이 기사 내에서 어떻게 발현되는가를 살펴보았다. 기사 내에 등장한 요소들의 전체적인 분포 특징과 연구 대상 언론사 간 차이를 분석했다. 이를 통해 탐사보도의 심층뉴스생산 기능이 어떠한 방식으로 실천되고 있는지, 각 언론사 간 취재보도활동 방식에 차이가 있는지 확인했다. 일반적인 언론의 취재활동과 보도활동을 탐사보도의 취재보도활동 방식에 대입하여 취재활동을 주제, 취재원, 정보유형으로, 보도활동을 기사 구조, 기사 초점으로 분류하여 분석했다. 탐사보도의 취재보도활동 특징 차원에서 볼 때 주제와 취재원은 대상을, 정보유형은 주체를, 기사 구조와 기사 초점은 성격을 의미한다. 거시적 주제와 다양한 취재원, 단독개발정보가 많이 등장할 때 취재활동이 잘 이루어짐을 의미하고, 복합형 기사구조와 대안형 줄거리가 등장할 때 보도활동이 잘 이루어진다고 측정했다. 측정을 위해 국내 대표 일간지인 『조선일보』,『중앙일보』,『동아일보』를 분석 대상으로 선정 했다. 탐사보도가 다루는 다양한 이슈 중에서도 심층성이 두드러지는 교육 관련 이슈를 대상으로 함으로서 탐사보도 심층뉴스생산 방식 연구의 효율성을 고려했다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 정리해 보면 먼저 국내 탐사보도는 심층뉴스생산 기능을 취재활동 과정에서는 제대로 수행하고 있었지만 보도활동 과정에서는 제대로 실천하지 못하고 있었다. 거시적인 주제와 다양한 취재원 접근, 기자의 주도적 취재 활동이 심층뉴스 생산을 위한 취재활동을 증명했다. 반면 보도활동에서는 정보전달형 기사구조와 상황제시형 기사 줄거리가 가장 많이 등장함으로서 탐사보도의 사회 개혁적 성격이 제대로 발현되지 못함을 뒷받침 했다. 또한 연구 대상 언론사들 간 차이를 분석한 결과 각 신문사에 따라 취재보도활동 방식에 차이가 발견됐다. 연구 대상 세 언론사 중 중앙일보에서 탐사보도의 취재보도활동 요소의 특징이 가장 많이 두드러졌고, 그에 비해 조선일보와 동아일보는 미흡한 결과를 보였다. 즉, 각 언론사에 따라 심층뉴스생산 기능 실천력에 차이가 있음이 밝혀졌다. 이 연구는 기존 탐사보도 및 언론의 취재보도활동 방식 선행 연구들에서 제시한 결과에 반하는 결과를 보였다. 선행연구들은 언론의 취재보도 관행으로 인해 탐사보도가 역할을 다하지 못하며 획일적인 기사를 생산한다고 지적했었다. 하지만 탐사보도의 심층뉴스생산 기능이 취재활동에서는 제대로 수행되고 있으며 각 언론사 마다 각기 다른 취재보도활동 방식을 실천하고 있음을 확인했다. 하지만 보도활동에서는 기존 연구 결과와 동일한 결과를 보였다. 이러한 결과는 앞으로 탐사보도의 사회개혁적 성격을 부각시킬 수 있는 보도활동의 보완이 이루어질 때 탐사보도의 심층뉴스생산 기능이 적절히 수행될 수 있음을 시사했다. 이 연구는 그동안 질적 연구방법을 통한 탐사보도의 폭로 기능 실천 연구에만 집중되어 있던 한계를 벗어나고자 했다. 기사 내용분석을 통해 탐사보도의 취재보도활동 방식을 양적으로 측정한 초창기 연구라는 점에서 의의를 갖는다. 이 연구 결과를 바탕으로 탐사보도의 기능과 역할에 대한 논의가 더 확장되고, 더 다양한 이슈들과 매체들을 대상으로 그 관계성을 입증하는 후속 연구가 필요하다는 점을 제안한다.;This study searched for in-depth investigative news reports by investigative reporting and analyzed the facts within journalism practices. It also ensures whether the in-depth investigative news production functions properly, which is suggested as an alternative to overcome current crisis in journalism. The purpose of this study is to assure how the in-depth news coverage of the production functions, and to verify the possibility of investigative report as an alternative to overcome the crisis in journalism. The study conceptualizes the function of in-depth investigative news reports and examines how the highlighted features in exploratory report such as extensive subjects, individual’s initiatives and nature of social reformist are expressed in articles. It also analyzes the elements of overall distribution within the article and the differences among media. This allows us to confirm, how the investigative report of in-depth news production is practiced and by means of journalism practices, whether there is a difference between media. The research analyzed the classified legwork by subject, source, types of information and presswork by story structure, focus of article, which substitutes the activities of reporting general media to investigative report of press coverage. From the features of investigative report by legwork, it means object is title and the source, subject is the types of information, and characteristic is story structure and focus. For the measurement, Korea's leading daily newspaper "Chosun Ilbo", "Joong-ang llbo", "Dong-A Ilbo," are chosen for analysis. Among various issues covered by investigative report, education related issues are targeted since these are often discussed in-depth, as well as considered the efficiency of news production of exploratory report. Based on the analysis of result, domestic investigative report does function properly in legwork process by producing in-depth news but not in reporting activity process. Macro perspectives, various ways of source’s contact and reporter’s leading activities are the proofs for production of news in-depth in reporting activity. But on the other hand, type of information delivering news structure and type of situation based news are the most often shown in report activity. This proofs the fact that investigative reports’ tendency of social reforming is not realized properly. Also, by analyzing the differences among targeted media, different reporting legwork has been found. Among the three, Joong-ang Ilbo had shown the most peculiar feature of investigative report in legwork and in comparison, the rest two shown insufficient result. In other words, this reveals the fact that there are differences in producing in-depth news among media. This research is against the result from the precedent ones, that of existing investigative report and report activity by legwork. Preceding research point out that because of the media legwork custom, investigative report could not play its role fully, only producing trite articles. But the function of investigative report producing news in-depth is conducted properly and it is confirmed that each media conduct differently. But in reporting activity, it has shown the same result in accordance with existing result. This result indicated that from now on, only when complementary measures are taken to highlight the investigative reports’ social reforming tendency, the function of exploratory report of producing news in-depth would be properly done. This research tried to overcome the limits of concentrated result of muckracking function in investigative report done by qualitative research. This is significant, because it is the first research done by quantitative measure taken on legwork of investigative report by analyzing the content of the article. Base on the result of this research, I suggest the discussion of function and role of investigative report should be expanded and there needed to be more following research to be done, proofing the relation between several issues and media.
