Abstract
;This analyzes the advertising effectiveness of round and thin models. Various studies demonstrate that extremely thin and beautiful models are likely to trigger contrasting, negative self-evaluations in viewers. Some companies therefore have adopted an advertising strategy that departs radically from traditional approaches. Rather than presenting products in association with models that exemplify the current beauty ideal of thinness, these companies increasingly employ rounder, familiar models. This method seems to have been successful in causing less harm, in that initial empirical support indicates round and average-size models are less threatening and may have fewer negative consequences for perceivers compared with extremely thin models. But what underlying processes make people prefer and buy products advertised by round models? Does this trend mean that advertising with ultra-thin models no longer works? This paper aims to provide some answers to these questions by investigating the factors which influence brand attitude. Among the various factors, I focused on model's body image, viewer's body image, self-esteem, public body consciousness and upward comparison. Traditional studies in attitude relied on explicit attitude measures using self-reported measures. In the past decade, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of studies employing implicit attitude measures. One method of researching implicit attitudes that has become very popular in psychology recently is the Implicit Association Test(IAT; Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998). It is popular method for the study of automatically activated cognitive structure. For holistic understanding of attitudes I employ both explicit and implicit attitude measures. In Study 1, the model's body image, viewer's body image, and an individual's global self-esteem levels were examined to see whether they have impact on explicit and implicit brand attitudes. Model's body image and viewer's body image turns out to have interaction effect on explicit and implicit brand attitudes. Explicit brand attitudes are more positive for the ad with the thin model regardless of viewer's body image type. The implicit brand attitudes are more positive when the model's body image and the viewer's body image matched. And three-factor interaction was not significant. In study 2, the model's body image, viewer's body image, and public body consciousness were considered to confirm the influence on explicit and implicit brand attitudes. The results reveal significant difference according to the public body consciousness level in an explicit manner. People with high public body consciousness, explicit brand attitudes are more positive for the ad with the thin model regardless of viewer's body image type. People with low public body consciousness, explicit brand attitudes are more positive when the model's body image and the viewer's body image matched. In study 3, the consentaneity of model-viewer body image and the level of upward comparison were examined to see whether they have impact on explicit and implicit brand attitudes. As a result, explicit brand attitudes showed significant interaction effect. People who comparing more with the thin model showed more favorable explicit attitude when their body image unmatches to the model's. On the other hand, people who comparing less with the thin model showed more favorable explicit attitude when their body image matches to the model's. In addition, to see how well does explicit and implicit attitude seperately predict the purchase intention, the regression analyses were conducted in study 1,2,3. Both explicit attitudes and implicit attitudes, each significantly predicted purchase intentions. And predictive validity even increased when explicit attitudes and implicit attitudes are taken together.
