Abstract

Internet news takes an advantage over other news media because it provides contents and interactive service such as "free board" with users. The attribute of interactivity in Internet news service may influence on the construction of users' opinion. When users read news via Internet, they often post their opinion by clicking a particular button, or/and they see other opinions. These behaviors bring about the accumulation of opinions about a particular news, such collected opinions on the board may contribute to help users' establish their own, solid opinions. Despite this overall effect, many literatures point out that illogical contents and negative expressions are negatively influence on the function of public sphere on the web. Thus, this study sets out with a presumption that the quality of users' opinion varies according to the logic of the opinion content and to whether the expressions are positive or not. That is, this paper focus on the discrete effect of the logic of content and expression in posted opinion on the quality of users' opinion. The content is divided by two, logical and illogical content, and the expression, negative such as abusive language, and positive. It is assumed that the quality of users' opinion would be better by taking steps, from 'formation of opinion' to 'delication of opinion.' The concept of 'formation of opinion' is divided by 'opination' and 'range of opinion,' and that of 'delication of opinion' is subdivided by 'in-depth opinion' and 'conceptual differentiation of opinions.' Based upon the theoretical discussions, an experiment was conducted to identify the effect of the use of users' opinion forum. An online survey was conducted prior to the experiment in order to make foundations for experimental research. The online survey aims to identify the conditions of the use of users' opinion forum in order to secure the validity of the experiment research and to find out the problems and evaluations of users' opinions in order to determine validity of major concepts. The survey was conducted among DAUM users through e-mail. Through online survey, followings are revealed. First, most of the Internet news users employ users' opinion forum routinely. Second, they regard illogical contents and negative expressions the most problematic. Third, their evaluation is that users' opinion forum helps with identification of public opinion trends and reflection of their own opinions. It proves that experiment that leverages users' opinion forum is possible in natural Internet use environment, and verifies the validity of theoretical discussions that the quality of users' opinion varies according to logic and expression styles of the opinions. Thus, an experiment was conducted based upon the survey result. An online experiment was conducted to offer the use of experimental news sites. It is a kind of a field experiment, in which the experimental news sites serve as a experiment lab. First, four news sites were constructed; each site had each different opinion with differently-manipulated logic and expression. The opinions were selected from the posting on actual news sites and manipulated into four different kinds. And then, One hundred twenty six subjects participating from online survey are randomly assigned to each four treatment condition: negative expression and logical, positive expression and logical, negative expression and illogical, and positive expression and logical. The results show that opinions with logic and positive expressions have more positive effects on the quality of users' opinion, than those with illogicalness and negative expressions, and that logic has greater effect on the quality of users' opinion than expressions. The conclusion implies that it is more effective to facilitate users to unfold their opinions logically by themselves than to control negative expressions in order to promote users' opinion forum and its advantages in forming the overall public opinions. This study effectively proves that Internet news offers the public sphere as well as simply conveys news, eventually contributing to the promotion of sound discussions and public opinions. However, this study also leads to the results that users' opinions with illogicalness and negative expressions can offset positive functions of users' opinion forum and that logical opinions has greater influence on the quality of users' opinion. It is believed that social members' reflective and deliberate opinions can be the very foundation of democracy and the basic elements to form powerful and cohesive public opinions. Given that users' opinion forum on the Internet news has positive effects on the quality of users' opinion, it is necessary to take a variety of measures so that users can develop logical opinions in order to enhance sound functions of users' opinion forum.;이 연구는 일상적인 인터넷 뉴스 이용에서 접하게 되는 독자의견의 내용과 형식 이 이용자가 기사에 대해 보다 확고하고 정교한 의견을 형성하는데 도움을 줄 것이 라고 보았다. 의견 내용의 논리성에 따라 그리고 표현방식이 긍정적이냐 부정적이 냐에 따라 이용자의 의견의 질이 달라질 것이라고 생각하였다. 의견의 질 향상에 영향을 미치는 독자의견의 질적 특성으로는 '논리성'과 '표현방식' 을 제시하였다. 독자의견은 논리성 정도에 따라 비논리적 단순반응, 비논 리적 단순의견, 논리적 단순의견, 논리적 숙의의견으로 구분하였다. 표현방식은 부정 성이 두드러지는지 여부에 따라 부정적 표현방식, 긍정적 표현방식으로 구분하였다. 의견의 질은 의견 형성단계를 거쳐 의견 정교화 단계로 발전한다고 보았는데 의견 형성은 '의견화'와 '의견의 범위'로, 의견 정교화는 '의견 심층성'과 '의견의 개념적 분화'의 두 가지 하부개념으로 구성하였다. 그리고 논리성과 표현방식이 이용자의 정보처리 과정에 미치는 영향에 대한 논의를 통해 논리적인 독자의견, 긍정적 표현 방식의 독자의견이 비논리적인 독자의견, 부정적인 표현 방식의 독자의견에 비해 이 용자의 의견의 질에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상하였다. 또한 표현방식보다 논리성이 이용자의 의견의 질에 더 큰 영향을 미칠 것으로 추론하였다. 이러한 이론적 논의에 바탕을 두고 독자 의견란 이용의 효과를 밝혀보기 위해 실험 연구를 실시하였다. 실험에 앞서 실험연구의 토대를 마련하기 위해 온라인 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 온라인 설문을 통해 실험연구의 타당성을 확인하기 위하여 독자의견란 이용 현황을 살펴보고자 했고, 주요 개념들의 타당성을 검토하기 위해 독자의견란의 문제 점과 독자의견란에 대한 평가를 알아보고자 했다. 온라인 상에서 5단계의 절차를 거쳐 최종적으로 표집 된 연구 대상자들에게 e-mail을 통해 설문을 배포하여 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 총 352부 이며, 이 중 불성실한 응답을 제외하고 실제 분석에 사용한 자료는 총 341부였다. 온라인 설문 결과 대다수의 인터넷 뉴스 이용자들이 일상적으로 뉴스에 대한 독자의견들을 접하고 있으며 부정적 표현방식과 단순반응이나 엉뚱한 소리와 같은 비논리적의견을 가장 큰 문제로 인식하고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 그리고 독자의견란 이 환경감시 기능이나 기자와의 상호작용 측면보다 기사에 대한 여론동향을 파악하고 자신의 의견을 반추해보는 데 도움을 준다고 평가하고 있었다. 이러한 설문결과는 자연스러운 인터넷 이용 상황에서 독자의견란을 이용하는 실험 연구가 가능하다는 것을 보여 주며 독자의견의 논리성과 표현 방식에 따라 이용자의 의견의 질이 달라질 것이라는 이 연구의 이론적 논의의 타당성을 확인할 수 있는 결과이다. 따라서 설문 결과를 토대로 다음과 같은 실험을 실시하였다. 독자의견의 논리성과 표현방식이 이용자의 의견의 질에 미치는 영향을 검증 하기 위해 자연스럽게 인터넷을 이용하는 상황에서 실험용 뉴스 사이트를 이용하는 온라인 실험을 설계하였다. 독자의견의 논리성과 표현방식이 각기 다르게 조작된 네 개의 뉴스 사이트를 만들기 위해 기사를 선택하고 실제 뉴스 사이트에 올라온 독자 의견을 선별하여 논리적+긍정적 표현방식, 논리적+부정적 표현방식, 비논리적 낮음 +긍정적 표현방식, 비논리적 +부정적 표현방식의 독자의견을 만들었다. 예비실험 대상자로 추출되었던 80명 을 제외한 온라인 설문 응답자 261명을 4개 집단에 무작 위 배치하여 이용할 뉴스 사이트 주소와 실험참여 방식에 대한 메일을 발송하고 본 실험을 실시 하였다. 본 실험 참여자는 총 130명으로 종속변인 측정을 위한 주관식 문항에 응답하지 않은 4명의 자료는 분석에서 제외하였다. 실험연구의 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 내릴 수 있었다. 먼저 표현방식이나 내용상 논리의 문제와 상관없이 기사에 대한 독자의견을 접하는 것은 이용자가 보다 확고한 의견을 형성하는데 도움을 준다는 결론을 내릴 수 있었다. 독자의견란이 이용자들의 자발적인 참여에 기초하기 때문에 의견내용 이나 표현방식의 문제가 드러나고 있는 현실에서도, 독자의견을 접하는 것은 이용자 의 의견형성에 긍정적 영향을 미친다는 것이다. 하지만 단순히 의견을 확고히 하는 단계를 지나 다양한 의견을 숙지하고 자신의 의견을 개념화,구조화하여 정교히 하는 데에는 독자 의견 내용이 논리적 인지, 표현방식이 긍정적인지의 여부가 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 수준 높은 의견 형성단계에는 독자의견의 내용적, 형식 적 특성이 영향을 미쳤다. 논리적인 독자의견은 이용자가 심층적 Ｙ¨개념적으로 자신의 의견을 정교화하도록 돕는 것으로 드러났다. 기사에 대한 양질의 독자의견이 제시될 때 이용자의 의견이 형성되고 정교화되어 수준 높은 의견을 형성하게 한다는 것이다. 이러한 결과는 독자의견란 이용에 따른 이점을 충분히 살리기 위해서는 보다 숙의적이고 논리적인 독자 의견이 많이 양산 되어야 한다는 점을 시사한다. 또한, 긍정적인 표현방식의 독자의견이 욕설과 반말, 비아냥과 같은 부정적인 표현 방식의 독자의견보다 이용자가 기사에 대해 다양한 의견과 관점을 숙지하고 나아가 자신의 의견을 보다 논리적Ｙ¨조직적으로 구조화하는데 도움을 준다는 점이 밝혀졌다. 하지만 인터넷 이용자들은 욕설,비방이 지나친 경우만 부정적으로 인식 하는 경향이 드러나 부정적 언어 표현이 인터넷에 존재하는 공론의 장의 긍정적 기능을 저하시키는 것은 사실이나 공론의 장을 심각하게 훼손시켜 그 기능을 마비시키고 있다는 평가는 지나친 우려라고 생각된다. 마지막으로 독자의견 내용의 논리성이 표현방식보다 이용자의 의견의 질에 더 큰 영향을 미치며 특히 의견을 정교화 시키는 단계에서는 독자의견 내용의 논리성이 더욱 중요한 영향을 미친다는 결론을 내릴 수 있었다. 독자의견의 표현방식이 거칠고 공격적이라 할지라도 제시된 독자 의견이 근거를 충분히 제시하면서 논리적으로 잘 짜여져 있다면 표현방식에 따른 효과는 크게 나타나지 않았다. 이러 한 연구결과는 언어적 표현방식을 통제하는 것 보다 이용자 스스로 논리적인 의견을 개진하도록 유도하는 것이 독자의견란 이용의 효과를 증진시키는 데 효과적인 방안이라는 것을 의미한다. 이 연구를 통해 현재 인터넷 뉴스는 뉴스를 전달함과 동시에 공론의 장을 제공함으로써 이용자의 의견의 질에 기여하는 이점을 지니고 있음을 밝힐 수 있었다. 독자 의견란 이용은 이용자의 의견의 질에 긍정적 영향을 미친다는 점이 증명되었기 때문이다. 하지만 비논리적인 독자의견이나 부정적인 표현을 사용한 독자의견은 독자의견란의 긍정적 기능을 상쇄시킬 수 있음도 밝혀졌다. 또한 의견의 질에 독자의견의 논리성이 더욱 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점을 입증할 수 있었다. 즉 이 연구는 인터넷 뉴스의 독자의견란에 주목하여 독자의견란 이용 행위를 탐색 하여 보고 독자의견란 이용이 의견의 질에 미치는 영향을 의견의 논리성과 표현방식 에 따라 다각적으로 살펴보았다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다.
